Indianapolis Restaurant - Suggestions?

We will be spending the night in Indy before heading to WDW. Any suggestions for a don't miss dinner? We're looking for something beyond the typical Applebees, etc.

What part of Indy are you wanting to eat at? I live on the north side of Indianapolis and I can recommend a few places: Clay Terrace is in Carmel. The best place is Mitchells Fish Market. GREAT food, but a little pricey. Don't know how much you want to spend either. Maybe if you let me know, I can recommend some more places....

We're staying at a hotel near the airport. We'll be getting to Indy about 6-7 p.m. We'll be coming from the south (Louisville area) up I-65.

We are a family of three DH, myself, and DS (7). Looking for mid-price (maybe $50 for all - not including alcohol (DH may have a beer).

There are a lot of options downtown that are great!
It is more upscale, but my favorite restaruant is Palamino. Very elegant and wonderful food!
Buca DeBeppo is a fun Italian dining experience where you choose one or two items that are served family style.
Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville is fun too!

These would be my suggestions for something different in Indy.

We have a Mitchell's Fish Market and Buca DeBeppo in Louisville. Never eaten there -but have heard it is good. DH will probably vote for Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville. We also may look into Palamino. We probably need a place where we don't need a reservation.

If you bail at Southport Rd (Exit 103) on the south side of Indy there are many restaurants in the area; one of which is Carrabba's Italian Grill. Also across from Carrabba's is Cheeseburger in Paradise (both can be seen from the interstate). Both of these plus many other restaurants are in the immediate area and on both sides of I-65.

If you rather get to the west side of Indy first then eat:
- Stay on I-465N, passing the Airport Expressway
- Exit onto Rockville Rd / US36 (Exit 13B)
- Drive west 4 miles on Rockville Rd to Avon. Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Outback are some of the nice restaurants just west of Raceway Rd (Marion / Hendricks county line)

Unfortuantely it seems nice restaurants are not immediately near the airport. I suspect that was by design to keep travelers in the airport restaurants.


If you're just looking for food there is a Burger King 3 blocks north of the Airport Expressway on High School Road (near the airport) and a Steak-n-Shake further north at Washington St (US 40) and High School Road. There is also a Denny's (and another sit down restaurant..can't remember the name..."Indy's" maybe) at the Airport Expressway and Lynhurst Rd (east of 465)

Carrabba's Italian Grill sounds like a good possibility. It's between that and Jimmy Buffet's right now. We've never eaten at Cheeseburger in Paradise - that one sounds intriguing too. We want to stop somewhere before we get to the hotel to check in.

I just looked. Is Cheesburger in Paradise the same thing as Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville? I can't find the JBM in Indy.

No Margaritaville in Indy. Just Cheeseburger in Paradise (which is also a Jimmy Buffett restaurant). We LOVE CIP! We travel to Illinois thru Indy and that is the one restaurant we ALWAYS stop to eat! And its not too far from the airport either.

I have to ask... did you get a really cheap flight out of Indy? I've been shopping for airfare for our December trip and haven't been able to find anything cheap at all out of Louisville. Its getting really frustrating!!

Our tickets from Indy to MCO were $157 round trip, non-stop on Southwest. We purchased them back in late July/early August. I keep checking to see if Louisville rates will be cheaper, but no luck.

We decided we would rather drive up the night before and use parksleepfly.com. It is only about $25 more to get a hotel along with the parking. The hotel is nothing fancy, but will do for a good night sleep before our trip.

If you are looking for something extra special for your child, you might try Pizza King in Avon, a westside suburb of Indianapolis. It's a very casual and inexpensive place with good pizza and a variety of other stuff (I don't know about beer), but it has a model train inside a glass case which travels along the booths and brings your drinks to you. I used to take my son there for his birthday every year at his request, although I live 45 minutes away. They have video games you can play in your booth as well. My kids absolutely loved that place, which is maybe 15 minutes from the airport.

If you want something closer in, the Spaghetti Factory in downtown Indianapolis is an inexpensive place which offers good food. Not really a "can't miss" place, but my family likes it.
