Independance Air ceasing operations

Aye Obi read this on a.net

Dont think this will be the end of Airline culls for the year. Lets just hope no-one gets too affected from the boards, I have my fingers crossed for Delta.

there's a big difference between Delta and Independence (fly by night) Air.

I can't see the US government letting Delta and Northworst and the unfriendly skies of United all go down at the same time (they're all in bankruptcy).

But then again, big fish have gone before them (the hated Pan AM, the rude and obnoxious TWA -- both deserving of demise)...

actually, all any one of them needs is a plane crash. Northworst was saved one year by one of its crashes. They made so much money on insurance they were in the black that year.

Sorry, that seems a bit sick to me. I'd much prefer to lose my money than my life.

it was a topic of many news shows when it happened....(the crash pushing Northworst back into the black)...

Beth,

You are never to big for a fall. I follow much of the discussions about this subject and although no-one wants it to happen the general opinion of US industry members understand that losing a carrier maybe the answer. There is alot of sceptical thought about Virgin America setting up shop for this very reason.

the fall of the great and mighty Pan Am many years ago is proof of that.....

but some of us were very happy to see it go....along with the demise of the despised (by some of us) Najeeb Haleby...

Sorry but to look at a plane crash in such cold financial terms is just plain wrong to me :confused3

There are always two sides to every issue, and I don't mean 'pro' and 'con'; I mean the 'emotional' and the 'practical'. Unlike 'pro' and 'con', which are in opposition to each other, 'emotional' and 'practical' live side-by-side. Viewing a situation only from the 'emotional' perspective doesn't make the 'practical' perspective go away, anymore than viewing a situation only from the 'practical' perspective doesn't make the 'emotional' perspective go away. We cannot operationalize the impact of the 'emotional' perspective, so it is useless to speculate about what it would be. By contrast, we can operationalize the 'practical' perspective, which is what I believe disneyholic was doing.

Off topic:
Hope you dont mind me asking but where are the woodland pictures from on the site from your signature pics? I know woodland can all look the same but they remind me so much of a walk in North Wales.

That's the Great Smokey National Park, specifically the Rich Mountain Trail near Cades Cove. Wonderful place to hike.

I love dense woodland hiking, hence my love of the Betws-y-Coed area in Wales.

United came out a few days ago.

Obviously.

But at the time, there were many snide remarks by reporters/journalists that Northworst was more profitable crashing planes than flying them.

Yes, but to bring it up on a thread about an airline going bust almost sounds as if you are condoning a practice of crashing aeroplanes to keep a business running.

Whoa. I didn't make that leap!

It was to bring up a quirky bit of aviation history that an airline was saved from bankruptcy by having one of the worst crashes in history (at the time). And it was a crash that was entirely their fault (or rather the fault of their pilots - though they tried to blame it on everyone in sight - the favorite of any lawyer worth his weight).
