Hi everyone,

We're new to the DVC. I was looking at the points charts for 2010 and 2011 and 2011 is higher. I thought we were told that the number of points per vacation home would not change, but that new books would come out every year because dates vary (Thanksgiving, Easter).

But we are looking to go in January. Both 2010 and 2011 have January 1-31 as the lowest category. But if you look at Animal Kingdom Lodge - the point values are different even though all the dates are the same.

Is this normal? We were specifically told the number of points that it "costs" to rent a certain room wouldn't change, but the dates in the categories would change.

The total number of points in the resort can not change. Disney can change the allocation of points each year. I believe that the most it can be changed in a year is 10%.

The point charts for each of the Disney Vacation Club resorts are designed the year the resort opens and are "locked in". Disney can reallocate points within a given chart, though they can not add points. As an example for 2010, Disney reallocated points to make weekend nights less expensive and weekday nights adjusted upwards. Disney did this because they realized that most members were traveling Sunday-Thursday and not over weekends. Because the points for the weekend nights were so much more than the weeknights.

Any adjustment Disney makes should benefit their members. There have been two adjustments to the point charts since 1991 so it is not a common occurrence. As I mentioned if any adjustment is made upwards to the points, than an adjustment with that same resort's point chart has to be adjusted downwards.

Hi everyone,

That is true and the number of points per vacation home have not changed. But what can (and has) happen is that the points are re-balanced across the entire calendar year. If you look carefully, for ever time period that has gone up in cost there are also periods which have gone down. Specifically most weekdays went up while weekends went down. If you intend to use points for full week stays, chances are the numbers have not changed much from year to year--mostly 1-4 points over an entire week. Those using points mostly for weekend stays have had their costs go down. But members who had targeted weekdays are most likely paying more in 2011 than in 2010.

Thanks everyone - I understand now. Yes, looks like Premier timeframe went down some. I see...

Thanks for helping a new owner!!

I tend to believe we will see a leveling in the charts between week nights and weekends. (The cost per night will be the same.) In many categories there is just a point or two difference between Su – Th and Fr / Sa. I think the 2012 adjustment will bring these closer. Look at the Hawaii chart to see our future. :surfweb:

Sometimes it can work in your favour. We actualy save 6 points on our vaction next year.

i disagree and think that hawaii is a very different animal than orlando. i expect orlando to maintain higher demand for weekends and therefore higher point costs for weekends (just not double the weeknight point cost like they were a few years ago).

but we'll have to wait and see when the 2012 charts come out...
