incorrect info on credit report!

I just looked up my hubby's credit report and his personal info is incorrect! They have his name as Francese formerly known as Francisco! (Francisco is his correct and only name) They also has some bogus former address for him saying he lived in Texas! He never lived in Texas! It has a specific house/street/city/zip address for him in Texas! I called the credit place (equifax) and they said I must dispute it, which I did.

I'm just wondering why this happened? How could they get a incorrect name and address? Where could this info have came from, could it be identity theft? Nothing else is incorrect such as his accounts. Has anyone else ever had this type of problem? Thanks

If there is incorrect information on the credit report, you should send a letter to the reporting agency challenging it and asking them to delete it.

I've done this for incorrectly reported items, and if they could not verify the information, they removed it.

Good luck.

I think, at least the name part, is from someone putting his name incorrectly into the computer at some point in the past. Could be the same for the address - the info the agencies have is only as accurate as the people who input the information. Get it deleted/changed, but I don't think it's identity theft, or fraud.

This isn't uncommon. Has he ever gotten mail addressed to him with that other name? If anyone with his same name has ever lived at those addresses it could show up on his credit report. The post office kept changing my address to my BIL's address for some strange reason and it showed up on my credit report that I lived there. Honestly, as long as the numbers part of the report is fine it isn't a big deal. You could send a letter in correcting it but it isn't necessary. If you apply for a loan and the loan officer asks about the name or the addresses just tell them you don't know anything about that. They know how it works. I bet almost everyone out there has stuff like this on their credit report at some time or another and didn't even know about it.

This is one of the problems. I think the number is something like 40-60% of all credit reports have incorrect information on them, and yet banks and companies use these like gospel to set interest rates, insurance rates, and even determine who to hire for jobs. And yet getting anything fixed is nearly impossible - the reporting agencies don't care and they could care less about matching each other since they are competitors, after all.

We had a Walmart CC years ago to get the $0.03 off per gallon at the gas station near our house. At one point the card just stopped working - we had been paying it off in full each month. Not being a big WM fan anyway I just said screw it and stopped trying and bought gas elsewhere. A month later we got a letter from a collections agency because there was an unpaid balance of $24 on the WM CC. We never had received a bill from WM. I called the bank number to ask what was going on and they had completely changed our address in their system - street number, street name, city name, everything except our names, and the address doesn't even exist. It was insane. I made them send me a corrected statement, no late fees, to the correct address, and a letter admitting their mistake and that they would take the account out of collections. I had to file the letter with the reporting agencies, but it still shows up on our reports as an account that went to collections at one point.

If you do send anything in to get your report changed, make sure you send it certified with tracking and receipt confirmation that you can keep forever to prove you sent it and they received it and then follow up with them aggressively. They are not going to help you out of the kindness of their greedly little hearts.
