Hi, I suffer from moderate to severe urinary incontinence, and i use adult diapers. This was touched on earlier in "Adult diapers at Disney," but i have a few questions and concerns that are not addressed in that thread. It answered my question about places to change. Since i am mobile, i can easily change standing up. Do they provide adult diapers in the parks by any chance at the first aid stations? If so, that would save me from having to bring my own. I noticed in the picture of the bathrooms thread that there was a changing table which looked like diapers under it. Now, i don't mind bringing my own, but it would involve bringing a backpack with diapers in it through security. Which would be embarrassing. I am going with my parents who work at Disney into the parks, and I want to be able to manage my incontinence as easily and with discretion as possible. Currently, i carry spare diapers in my backpack. Maybe i could leave this in a locker? or at the first aid station? I want to be able to enjoy the parks without having to lug a backpack around all day. I think im already planning to use the companion restrooms for changing. I don't have to change lying down, i can easily do it standing up.

Is there any way to be searched by the security guy while not exposing my problem to the public? would he actually take the diapers out of the bag?

Another question.. how does one go about swimming while suffering from this condition? Are swim diapers absolutley necessary for urinary incontinence, or is this more a necessity for those with bowel incontience?

Thankfully, my incontience problems are urinary only..

Any advice from a fellow incontinent whos been there is greatly apprecaited.

Thanks!

Disney does not provide adult diapers for sale but does have kids diapers for sale at the Baby Center. I would not worry about it as they would assume it was for your grandmother and not think twice. They are only looking for weapons and dangerous stuff like bombs and not allowed stuff like bottles. You can store your backpack in a locker at the front of the park. Disney believes its guests should come prepared thus it sells diapers for babies, formula and has some OTC medicine for sale in parks as well as the wheelchair rentals. They do not mind a one time gift but do not want people to make a habit of it so they discourage guests from abusing such stuff.

When I take mom back to DLR I will have a bag of diapers for her and have taken them with me into nonDisney parks with no questions asked. I cannot say what WDW is like but at DLR they did not take everything out of the bags unless the bag was so full that they could not see what might be hidden. Stop worrying about what others think and enjoy life. If you are embarrassed then just say "Those are my grandmother's, she will join us later". If it is not Jerry Springer type of things then do not be embarrased.

As said above, security is looking for weapons and other non allowed items. I have never seen them take anything out of bags. They have you open it and then they just peak inside. When we took a blanket they asked us to push it over so he could see the bottom. They see personal items everyday and I'm sure that you are not the first to travel with blader control products. Also, I'm not surem but the first aid station may hold your bag for you so you do not have to tote it around if youtell them what it is. They keep a small bag of my sons medications for us. It never hurts to ask and if not you'll have a bag with you so you now have a handy place to stash your souviners. I hope you have a great and safe trip.

Thanks for the replies.. i'm sure ill be just fine. You are probably right about them seeing stuff like that every day. I am really looking forward to the trip..next saturday! yay..spring break at disney world.. Dad's a cast member, so we get free admission.. u cant beat that...

Are incontient individuals required to wear swim diapers? or can they just wear their regular bathing suits? I plan to get one eventually..when i can afford it..

The cast members (CM) do not look at what people are wearing to see if people have proper protection. CMs will take action if a guest is using the any park as a restroom or contaminating the water with human waste. It is up to you to decide if your dribbling is enough to be unsanitary. I hope the kids do not see this lol.

My mom is a cough type of dribbler. If she peed first she would be fine on slides and swimming until she got a coughing spell then she would have to go change clothes. It is is ongoing then I would not go in the water without protection out of courtesy for others.

That may be something to call them about and they are Canadian.

A lot of choices listed there.

Security checkpoint does not pull things out of bags they look in the open bag and thats it.

Thanks for the reply. It is not total loss of control.. i may be able to largely avoid incident by using the bathroom before i get in the pool..but theres no guarantees. I agree about wearing protection. And thank you for the links. I have a swim diaper in mind to purchase in the future, when funds are sufficent. Buying this stuff isnt cheap! Any creative ideas in the meantime if we do decide to go swimming? Even if i could order one, it probably would not arrive in time for me to take it with me. I have a couple of nylon pants.. maybe towel with saftey pins under nylon pants under bathing suit? from the sounds of it, we may not be doing much swimming anyway... so i may not even have to worry about it..

You are an adult so either talk to dad and get money or do like I and other disabled people do and wait for money to come in. This thread is getting on my nerves so Sue can answer any more of your questions.

As I said you can pee first then do a slide or two then change into your regular diaper and stuff. I want so bad to ride the swing ride at DCa but I am fat so I will not think about doing that ride. I want to do things in life and I just face the fact that somethings are not meant to be or change things so taht you can do what you want.

Didnt mean to get on your nerves..ive gotten all the info i need..Thanks!
It's not you; I think mechurchlady is just not feeling the best right now.
:grouphug: and Dole whips to Laurie

As was already mentioned,
  • The CMs do not take things out of bags. They may move things around a bit (or ask you to move things around) in order to see what they need to see.
  • You will not be the only person who has taken those kinds of products in (probably not even the first that day).
  • We take incontinence products with us for DD all the time. No one has ever commented on it.
  • Chances are the Security CMs will not even know what exactly your products are. They are looking for things that might be a threat and since those items do not present any kind of threat, they won't pay any attention to them.
  • WDW does sell baby diapers, but doesn't sell/have adult incontinence supplies anywhere that I know of.
  • You could leave your backpack of supplies in either First Aid or a locker (they are at the entrance to the park). But, those places might not be convenient to where you are when you need your supplies.
You will find that most people you see in the parks are carrying backpacks. If you have a lot of supplies, my suggestion would be to carry a few supplies in your purse or a smaller backpack and leave a larger supply in either First Aid or a locker. There is space on all the attractions to put a backpack on the floor, hold it on your lap or the more wild rides have either a mesh bag under the seat or some other container to out bags into to keep them from moving around.

For the swim diaper question; those are mostly to contain solid waste. When you think about it, anything meant to contain liquids is going to get wet when you go into the water. A saturated pad won't hold anything more; if you were to urinate into it. You need to decide for yourself whether or not you will be causing a problem for other guests. If it's a little minor dribbling, that is a lot different problem than someone who might empty their entire bladder into the water. I don't know exactly what the nature/extent of your problem is, but you may be able to minimize it to a safe level by urinating just before you get into the water and then getting out and going to the bathroom on a schedule for the whole time you are planning to be in the pool area.
Also, depending on how much urine you are talking about, you may find that there are some things you can do while you are out of the water and lounging around. For example, there are some pad products (one brand is called Poise Pads,) which have different levels of absorbency for different needs. You may be able to go into the bathroom and put one of these type of pads into your swimsuit when you plan to be sitting in a lounge chair on the side of the pool for a while. With a pair of nylon shorts or a swimsuit cover up, no one would be able to tell you are wearing protective pads. When you are ready to swim, you can go to the bathroom and remove it easily.

Seriously- don't stress about peeing in the pool. I'm a competitive swimmer who swims two miles EVERY day and have been in a VARIETY of pools in my life, and *everyone* does it. Trust me, little kids do far worse.

Swim diapers are really for poo and do nothing to hold in liquid, as they barely hold in the poo. I've learned that the hard way with my three year old swimmer. Now we have her trained to get out of the pool but while she was toilet training- ugh. So don't stress about needing a swim diaper unless your bowels are a bit unstable.

The water will instantly dissolve urine and the chemicals will kill it. Urine is sterile and the pools at Disney are so huge that the affect a leakage accident you have won't be but a drop in the bucket.

I would avoid the hot tubs, though- much smaller areas of water and chemicals in them...

But please don't let this stop you from swimming or feel like you have to pin on some towel to protect the rest of us. If you have an accident, no one will see you do it, and frankly, I doubt anyone would really care unless you stood by the side of the pool and made a big scene about it!

And definitely use the companion bathrooms. I'm mobile but have no balance so I need to lean on walls and things so I always use those. I also find that the floors in the regular bathrooms are ALWAYS being washed and are soaking wet, so walking through them to get to a stall sometimes feels like walking on ice to me.

Have fun!!

Thanks for the tips.. I'm back now.. vacation went smoothly.. i discovered some of the handicap stalls had their own garbage cans.. eliminating the need for companion restrooms.. Unfortunatley.. it was one of those handicapped stalls that i accidentally left my phone.. in animal kindgom.. Perhaps if i had used the companion restroom exclusively, if i went back for it it would still be there since companion restrooms have less traffic..oh well.. the phone wasn't the best, it was cutting out on me a lot..

Anyway.. as far as incon management, everything worked out real well.. I alternated between the companion restrooms and handicapped stalls.. Given the fact that companion restrooms were sparse..

Note to self.. make sure u have your phone when u leave a stall if you happen to take it out of your pocket.. i dont know why i did..i was afraid it would fall out of my jacket while changing. :-( i went back to get it and it was gone..no one turned it it.. oh well.. other than that..everything went swimmingly.. i had a lot of fun, the vacation was exactly what i needed.

Glad to hear you had a good time.
Thanks for reporting back.

Last night I walked away from ECV drop off and left my purse on the counter, glad your trip went well and it could have been worse like parents who misplace kids, lol.
