Yikes! Just saw this video and article.

Not sure how it happened but apparently it left behind millions in damage. I can't even imagine how hard it is to control such a large vessel. I marvel at the Captain's abilities every time I'm on board a huge ship and watch them pull in and out of port while making it look easy.

I mean... At least they didn't totally take out a dock like Celebrity did in Alaska this summer??

This is bad too.

Yeah, well, they totally took out a small boat dock (actually more than one), and damaged several vessels, including a pilot boat.

Looks to my untrained eye like they were fighting a pretty good cross wind, which was also the case with the Celebrity ship in Ketchikan. It's actually kind of impressive that the pilot got the ship to miss the dock. Unfortunately, doing so caused too much of a wake, and that wake ended up doing a lot of damage.

There's a pretty crazy videos on YouTube from people who filmed the whole thing from on board and it takes out huge sections of dock and pretty much wipes out the marina. I'd post it but it has very colorful language so go watch at your own discretion. ;-)

It looks like this happened a couple weeks ago though. It's weird they are just reporting on it now.

Well it was posted on the Carnival board elsewhere Aug 28. So it was reported a little while ago.

YIKES!!!! I really believe that bigger is not always better when it comes to cruise ships. Some of those mega behemoths seem to be hitting up ports that just aren't truly equipped to handle them. I've never been on a European cruise and seen the ports and docking situation with my own eyes so I'm just speculating......

Seen that on a boating forum recently also. The first video that surfaced was from the shore side view. Either way, someone has a lot of explaining to do.

Its not necessarily too big for a given area. If that were true, the ship wouldn't be there to begin with. Look at KW. The port said that anything over 100000 tons cant come in unless the weather is under a given set of conditions.

From watching the shoreside view, you can see where for whatever the reason, the stern was getting too close to the marina. The port azipod was turned about 45 degrees to port, and that's where the problem started. The wash started the damage then about 15 seconds later, the azipod was turned to astern, and the problem compounded as both engines were pushing against a wall, which undermined the pilings holding everything together. Without seeing exactly where the ship started off at, its kind of hard to judge what was going on, but something doesn't look right in the videos.
