Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

We finally got our 10 miler in today and it was not fun. I am feeling a little discouraged right now. I am finding it hard to get out the door in the first place, and once I am there it is harder than it was for a while. My pace has slowed and and I'm just not enjoying running like I had been. Anyone else been there? How did you get through?

You are down here in Houston if i remember. The weather sux. We had that really nice couple of weekends with drier weather and most runners really loved that. The last 2-3 weekends have been oppressive again. Run a 10k this morning and the weather (and bridge) forced my into walk mode a couple times.

Otherwise it is normal human emotion to grow weary of any long project and training for a race is really just a 2-4 month project. Hang in there. You are ready for the race. Tapering next weekend with a shorter run will re-energize you brain and body making the week coming into W&D exciting again.

Race night will bring a new level of excitement. Even if you were not well trained, the excitement of the race makes up for a lot.

You have now entered your taper and should enjoy the next two weeks.

Keep your spirits up. By race weekend you will be fine. I just came from the Expo in Philly and it did wonders for my excitement level.

I have been feeling that way lately too, but I am sure that the race will have me pumped up...I am getting very anxious for it! We are leaving Monday Sept 27th and I dont know how to concentrate next week at work :rotfl:

Yep, been there. Last week on my 13 mile run, I was tired and my pace showed it. This week, I almost opted to enter a 5K instead of doing my shceduled 9 mile long run. I did the long run and it was a good one. I finished strong. So hang in there and taper off the next couple of weeks. The excitement of the race will get your adrenaline pumping and you'll do GREAT!

We leave the 30th...I feel the same way...I think I will be driving my family and friends crazy :scared1: I am not the same person I was 6 weeks ago!:rolleyes1
I already have a 5K in mind locally beginning of Nov and another in Dec...I KNOW I have to have things on the horizon to continue what I have been doing...hmmm..if there was something in February....

Needing to share with others.
Last week I ran 8.5 staying on my 12 mpm pace almost perfectly.
This week I figured should be my last long run, so instead of doing the 10 miles that I had planned, I did 11.25. I did it mostly because I was afraid of doing the half having only gone as far as 10.
I was tough. I knew going into it that an almost 3 mile jump would be a lot, but I figured better now than in Disney.
Really the 1st 9 miles were pretty good. Mile 10 I was tired. Mile 11 I was hurting. I had to talk out loud to myself to keep going. My legs were in serious pain. I did finish, and only about 2 minutes off my expected time. I walked after and streached. I am still REALLY sore and stiff.
I am really worried about being tired and in pain those last couple of miles. AND I hate to feel like this after.
I'm really proud of myself for doing this and very excited about the race, but I'm nervous about feeling, well, badly.

In the morning head out for a 2-3 mile really light jog/walk. At a mile in stop and stretch. Then finish the run and make sure to stretch out again.

Congratulations on finishing the run. For future races you now know that a huge jump in training miles is not necessarily a good thing, but you also learned that you CAN make that three mile jump if necessary. In a race you still feel the pain but the crowd and race will help you to pull through better.

How do y'all normally feel after your long runs? I ran 9 today (for the first time ever) and feel kind of sick. I had a Think Thin bar (I eat them often) about an hour before I ran and drank water during. Afterwards I had a Vitamin Water and a regular water. I wasn't hungry, but I ate a can of tuna fish for the protein. That was about 2 hours ago and my tummy feels... off. I can't really describe it, but nauseous would be the closest word. This didn't happen after I ran 8 or after the 10K race, but has happened on some shorter (5) runs.

Any ideas? I want to be able to enjoy the post-race party, but if I feel like this I'll just want to go back to the hotel and moan.

PS-- for the Houston runners, wasn't today GREAT? I ran after the rain (I'm in the loop) and it was overcast and (dare I say) border-line chilly!! Best run so far!

Hey guys! I'm sorry if this has already been asked - do you have any idea of what "qualifying" times each race corrall will be? We just finished a 10K and much to my suprise, we finished in 59:52. Will that be second to the last gate or better?!?! :confused3

I have felt that way my last 2 long runs...How did I get throught it?...I kept reminding myself of two things; that I really want to do the half, and that the excitement of the race and the adrenalin charge that comes with it, will help carry me to the end.
Go for it, you can do this!

I feel like that sometimes too. Ran 12 this past Sunday - couldn't do it Sat. because of rain - and felt off the rest of the day. I pushed myself hard, and I'm sure that contributed to it. Ran 10.5 at an easier pace this past Thursday, and had no problems. Today, I finished my last longer run, 8.5, and felt great, but a couple of hours later my stomach wasn't happy for a little bit. I notice the same thing - sometimes I am affected, sometimes not.:confused3 I looked it up and it's very common. Hoping I, and you too, don't have that issue race night!:goodvibes

Great was a good word after the rain but in yesterday morning’s race it was just oppressive, especially when headed with the wind.

I’m not seeing an important ingredient anywhere in your post…carbs. That is except for a small amount in the V Water. More than likely you are feeling nausea as your system is attempting to restore blood glucose levels. Anyone who has done a really hard leg workout in the gym has had a similar feeling. Try to get a few more carbs in post run to help get nourishment into the system.

Other than that, it is not uncommon for a little queesiness post run as your body returns to normal

Bring a printout of your race results and after picking up your packet head to the runner relations table and have them adjust your corral. It should put you mid pack in the corral sequencing.

In the 15-day forecast Accuweather shows fall hitting Orlando just in time for the race. Morning lows are forecast for the upper 60’s Saturday and mid 60’s Sunday morning. Since this comes after a front (assuming the front actually comes through) we should expect a lower humidity for the race. I would still plan on race temps starting in the mid-70’s but if dew points are mid-60’s that will feel nice...

Of course if the front fails to make Central Fl then lows would could be lower 70's with race temps in the upper 70's and humid. Worse case would have the front delayed by one day, that would create a possiblity of the r word.

Rm317 10:4x pace when expecting an 11 not too shabby, great job!

Yesterday I ran the "Toughest 10k". I thought this was a gimmicky race when I first saw the brochure and blew it off. But I had a couple friends who said they were running the event and I really was not looking forward to a 10-12 mile run in the late summer heat. Yes it is still hot here in Houston.

The course – starts and finishes at the Kemah Boardwalk. I have run three races out of the boardwalk this year and for the runner who arrives a little early it is a great venue with plenty of real facilities and parking next to the start/finish. Once out of the boardwalk area the roads are in great need of improvement. They are rutted with pot holes in pot holes. Hurricane Ike did not help with the conditions in the area. The course winds through a residential area near the boardwalk for about a mile then approaches the Kemah Bridge. I call it a causeway because it looks like one. Anyway the course crosses the bridge out and back twice for a total of four crossings. The final .75 miles circles back on surface streets to the start.

The Race. We were standing around chatting when all of a sudden the crowd started to get quiet. The last lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner were wafting across the crowd. The instant the singer hit the last note the gun fired. My thoughts were to run a good training pace and attempt to carry the pace through the ups and woe back on the downs. The first mile clicked off just on a 10 minute pace. Mile 2, 10:15. Mile 3 I slowed up a bit as we hit the second climb – the heat of the morning along with speed equally wind speed forced a slight slowdown - 11:10. Laps 4/5 were off a few minutes due to slowing to pull a fellow runner up the third hill. I came on a girl who was in tears. I stopped to see if she needed help and she was just panicked – no physical issue just not wanting to go over to the other side knowing she would have to come back. You could see fear in her eyes. I kind of put my arm around her shoulder and pointed her up the hill and said I would run it with her. We had to stop a couple times to allow her to get out of her red zone. Once we crested I had to hold her back a bit as she wanted to take off like a rocket. Once near the bottom she thanked me and said I should go on. I did the final mile in 9:40 for a total time of 70:18. Not the time I had planned but a rewarding run. I did see the runner I helped up the third climb in the finish area.

The Hook. This RD has a new half marathon in December, The La Porte By the Bay Half Marathon; the Highest Off-the-Ground Half Marathon in Texas. If one entered yesterday’s race and the LA Porte Half you received a discount. The La Porte half is the highest off the ground half due to 8 miles of the race being on the Fred Hartman Cable Stayed Bridge. The Hartman bridge is the fourth longest cable stayed bridge in the US (soon to be just one of the top 10). Again it is an out and back across the bridge. I am not sure how the RD is going to put in aid stations along the bridge segment or if he will. Another Gimmicky race but then not. It has about a 1.5 mile continuous climb from one approach and a mile from the other. Since these are man-made climbs it is not too unlike a long hill session on a treadmill. Or that is the thought I am carrying into the race. Oh, I did enter.

The Friends? Never found them. One texted that they had something to do and the other is mia!
