Awesome job on the run!! We also got our Magical Express info in the mail today! (But I was supposed to get my brother's info too but didn't - have to call and check on that!)

Actually I realized that there's a mistake in mine too. My husband is arriving on the 11th but they had listed the 10th on the DME papers...and since my flight going there changed they also needed the new flight number, as well as our new return flight number. :faint: I called and it was an easy fix. :) Apparently they aren't sending new paperwork though, so that makes me a bit nervous...I hope they can easily fix yours too. But at least we got our DME mail!!!! :yay:

It must be Magical Express day because we got ours today too :cool1:

I really should try slowing down my long runs too. I just get so competitive with myself trying to go even a little bit faster with every run.

Woohoo, Magical Express Mail!! :yay: Such excitement.

I totally know what you mean about getting competitive with yourself. I think it's natural to want to see improvement, ya know? :confused3

Week 15: Rest Day
Saturday, December 8, 2012

Busy, busy day. I had a list of errands I wanted to get done over the weekend, but with my 20-miler scheduled for Sunday I decided to try to get them all in on Saturday so I could run on Sunday and then be a total lazy bum the rest of the day. I managed to fit everything in before Will and I headed out to meet my dad for "Christmas" lunch. Once we got home I (FINALLY!!) painted a few of the closets we got installed a couple of months back...just one more to go. :faint:

Mile 18 - 10:58

Mile 20 - 10:35

Total time: 3:44:50 for 20 miles
Average pace: 11:14/mile

:yay: :yay: :yay:

So I started this run hoping to keep the average pace between 11:00 and 11:30/mile. One thing that has really been helping me is to switch the pace function on my watch from current pace to average pace - DUH. Why didn't I think of that before? :rolleyes2 I did the same thing on Friday and I think that's the way to go for me, at least for the time being.

Anyway, about 0.5 miles in to the run I realized I made a mistake with my fuel. Normally I'll take 4 Gu chomps (1/2 bag) every 4 miles or so, which means that I should have brought 2 full bags for this run - 16 chomps. Apparently I had a brain fart when I was packing up to get ready to head out because I realized I'd only brought 12. Rather than go home (because there was a very real risk that I'd just STAY home if I did that) I took 3 chomps every 4 miles instead of 4 chomps. It worked out okay...whew. :thumbsup2

So...not much to say about the run! :thumbsup2 There was occasional drizzle and I got rained on for the last mile, but overall the weather was better than I was expecting (all week the forecast had been calling for rain). This whole "running more slowly" thing is definitely the way to go for me...I felt pretty good the entire time except for my shoulders - they began to cramp at the halfway point because I'd been tensing them up without realizing it. I also had occasional IT band soreness, but I made sure to change directions at the end of each loop and that definitely helped - there's one point of the loop where I could see a definite slope in the sidewalk, and I think it would have have been a mistake to run in the same direction the entire time. My right IT band would have been shredded. I just sort of spent the whole time zoning out and thinking about other things, and it was a much better run than my last 2 long runs (the 14- and 18-milers I did recently).

Afterward I came home, took a cold bath (could only stand 8 minutes of that!), showered and had some waffles. I was pretty happy with how I felt - some soreness, but nothing crazy. :thumbsup2 Then I fell asleep while snuggling with the monster pup, and when I woke up my left hip was KILLING me. I was walking with a noticeable limp, and for a bit I think both Will and I thought that I had definitely injured myself. Turns out I just slept in a weird position, and as I walked around more and stretched out a bit the pain began to lessen before going away entirely. WHEW. :thumbsup2

So a good run overall! And yet...what I was I thinking scheduling a second 20-miler?! Yikes! :faint:

Week 16: STRETCHFEST!
Monday, December 10, 2012

Normally Mondays are strength training days, but today I just didn't have it in me. You'd think after running 20 miles I would have the best sleep of my life...but I did not sleep well last night. :confused3 I had trouble falling asleep, woke up a few times and had weird dreams (including one where I was running a marathon and decided to hop in my car to drive part of the course...eventually I decided I shouldn't cheat, so I re-ran the area I'd just driven through). :confused3 And apparently when I did sleep I did so in a really weird position, so now my neck is really sore on the right side. I'd already decided to skip a few exercises to give my legs a break, but on the drive in I concluded it would be best to just stretch for 15-20 minutes and not do the workout at all. This was definitely the right call - I think my body needed the little break, and stretching just felt SOOOO good. My legs feel really good today - going down stairs is tough, which is always the case for me when I get sore from running. But other than that I feel much better than expected. :thumbsup2 I just need a very, very large cup of coffee and I'll be all set.

Happy Monday! 2 weeks from now we will be TAPERING!!! :yay: :yay: :yay:

Awesome job on the 20-miler! You rocked it!

I was scheduled to do 19 this weekend - I wanted to do 20 - but I only did 18. It is so stupid how mad I am for cutting it a mile short! I was just sore and hurt all over and mentally wasn't into it (my pace was terrible from the beginning - like 45 seconds slower than all my other long runs :confused3). I also always seem to have trouble if I don't do an out-and-back. On my 17-miler, I ran by my car and it was not good. On this past run, I also ran by my car and it was not good after that!

Actual scheduled 20-miler in 2 weeks - I am not running by my car! Damn that thing! :P

Now having some weird outside arch pain in my left foot. Doesn't feel like plantar fasciitis, must have just strained it somehow (it didn't hurt at all while running or after the run...). Might also cut out a run or two this week.

I read that you posted this in the marathon thread and just read your blog post. I'm sorry you didn't have a great run.

Lately it's been so sad to read the marathon thread! :sad2: I feel like the training is really getting to everyone (and I definitely include myself in that statement as I sit here at work in a fog!)...this really is crunch time.

I have totally had runs like the one you had. It sucks. I guess all you can do is learn what you can from it, allow yourself to be mad for a bit, and then move on. The bad runs just make you appreciate the good ones that much more, right? (That's what I try to tell myself.) :p I do think that's true to an extent though, because after me having a not-so-great 18-miler and a crappy 14-miler, I'm practically bouncing off the walls after finally having a good long run yesterday.

Not sure about the pace issues...it sounds like lots of people are having that problem. Maybe it's your body's way of telling you to take it easy for a bit...I think you are smart to cut the mileage down a bit this week. Hopefully you can take a breather and start to get pumped for that 20-miler you have coming up!!

I know what you mean about running by your car! :rotfl2: That's why I didn't go home to get more chomps when I realized I was short by 4.

I hope your foot feels better...have you tried icing at all?

Eyes on the prize...we're almost there! :cheer2:

IMG_0402.JPG

(I have been picturing the finish line a LOT lately :p)

I can't wait to cross that finish line!!

I think the sad thing is - I wasn't even that sore about my long run this weekend - which is why I am so mad at myself! It hurt during the run, but not afterwards!

I think I will probably cut back a little this week, maybe. :rotfl2: I have a problem doing that! I wasn't going to not go out today, but it was too nice (overcast and 50º) to pass up!

The training is getting to all of us - it seems to go in waves around the same time for everyone. When I had a crappy 17-miler, a lot of people were crappy that weekend too. This weekend the same. Must be the mileage (and to think we are on "low mileage" plans!)!

I am glad your run rocked! Are you doing another 20 or going into the 22 range for your last long run before taper?

I think I am going to stick with a 20-miler, but make the 10- and 20-milers back-to-back. Originally when I was laying out my training plan I envisioned myself doing back-to-back 11- and 22-milers on that last weekend, but I'm not sure it's necessary. :confused3 I think the back-to-back aspect of it will be challenging enough! :faint:

And yeah, it's getting to everyone...I've just come to accept the fact that I am pretty much going to be a walking zombie for the next 2 weeks (actually less than 2 weeks now!). :faint: :faint: :faint:

Week 16: Run #1 (5 miles on the treadmill)
Tuesday, December 11, 2012

5 miles complete/34 miles planned for the week
375.1 miles completed so far in training

Today's run was...dare I say it?...good.

??!?! WHAA?

Is it weird that I freak myself out more over these 5-mile treadmill runs than over my weekend long runs? Because that is what seems to be happening. Oooooookay? :confused3

Total time: 50:07 for 5 miles
Average pace: 10:01-10:02/mile

I made a couple of changes today that I really think made a big difference...I am definitely going to stick with them so that I can survive the rest of these 5-mile treadmill runs (only 3 left!!!!!!!!!).

1. I ate half a granola bar before the run (ate the other half when I was done).
2. I brought a water bottle with me and took 30-45 second walk breaks twice throughout the run to drink - I think I said somewhere else in this thread that I never take walk breaks on the treadmill because when I have done so in the past I've just stopped the run altogether...and while I did have trouble starting up again after 20 seconds or so I was back in the groove. I'm just more dedicated now than I used to be, I think. :confused3
3. I slowed my pace down...this is what I did during the run (writing it here so I remember!):

0.5 miles @ 5.9 MPH (0.5)
1 mile @ 6.0 MPH (1.5)
1 mile @ 6.1 MPH (2.5)

30-45 second walk/water break

1 mile @ 6.2 MPH (3.5)
0.5 miles @ 6.3 MPH (4)

30-45 second walk/water break

0.2 miles @ 6.4 MPH (4.2)
0.2 miles @ 6.3 MPH (4.4)
0.2 miles @ 6.2 MPH (4.6)
0.2 miles @ 6.1 MPH (4.8)
0.1 miles @ 6.0 MPH (4.9)
0.1 miles @ 5.9 MPH (5.0)

Hmm...short attention span much?! :rotfl2:

I think all 3 of these things contributed to me not hating life during and after the run. The past few 5-milers have felt really rough...it's been a struggle to finish and when I did get them done I was drenched in sweat, most likely dehydrated and SOOO hungry...in other words I felt like a complete wreck. Not so much today. :thumbsup2 What a relief.

Anyhoo...good news and bad news.

The bad news? It's snowing. :headache: I don't think it's sticking though. :thumbsup2
The good news? Exactly one month from now I will have finished the 2013 WDW 5K!!!!! :yay: :yay: :yay:

Week 16: Run #2 (5 miles on the treadmill)
Wednesday, December 12, 2012

10 miles complete/34 miles planned for the week
380.1 miles completed so far in training

Another good treadmill run this morning! :thumbsup2 I seem to have finally figured out how to survive these 5-milers.

Total time: 50:02 for 5 miles
Average pace: 10:00-10:01/mile

Having said that...I'm looking forward to them being over. :upsidedow I'll be done with them next week...just 2 more!!! :yay:

Packing...

I love these race trips. LOVE them. But I hate packing for them. In general I hate packing for any trip (Disney or otherwise), but throw in a race (or two...or three :upsidedow) and you introduce a whole host of other things to consider. What if I forget my shoes?! What if I forget my race waiver?! WHAT IF I FORGET MY CAMERA????

So I'll just list out what I need for each event here. I've still got time to think about this, right?

For the expo (all of this will be in my carry-on bag):

- $$$...so Disney and the various vendors can take it :upsidedow
- My and bro's signed race waivers for bib and packet pick-up...you CAN print these out at the expo, but it's another line to wait in. If you bring the waivers signed and ready to go, that's less time in line and more time SHOPPING! :yay:
- My driver's license (necessary for them to release my stuff to me)
- A copy of my bro's driver's license and a form signed by him stating that I can pick up his stuff
- A copy of my bro's proof-of-time to move him to my corral (I will probably bring mine as well just in case)

General stuff (all races)...have already started setting this stuff aside!:

1. Obviously I'll need my normal running attire, and I find it easiest to go from the bottom up in my head to make sure I don't forget anything. Most of this stuff will be going in my carry-on bag in case my luggage gets lost:
- shoes (one pair for the 5K and half, another for the full...going to ditch my current shoes and start running in the new pairs on Christmas Eve)
- socks (3 pairs)
- bottoms (shorts for the 5K, skirts for the half and full)
- running bras (3) :o
- running tops (HOPEFULLY warm enough to wear sleeveless - 3)
- Garmin Forerunner 210 + charger
- Sweaty Bands (3)
- Running sunglasses - no hat! I don't think they look as good in pictures :P
- Throwaway clothes, if needed - I haven't brought these the past 2 years and really regretted it last year, so I'll need to think about this more. The thought is that you're up so early in the morning and the wait in the corrals for the races to begin is long that it's smart to bring old clothes to keep warm. When the race begins, you can toss them along the course. Disney will pick them up, launder them and donate them to charity. I should probably a set for each race...woof. :crazy2:
2. Sweat- and water-proof sunscreen...I am pretty sure they don't provide this at the aid stations along the race courses! For both races I've done I have had good luck with Neutrogena Sport/Wet Skin sunscreen.
3. Body Glide...!!!
4. Race day breakfasts - Bruegger's bagels with peanut butter (Jif-to-go containers) + disposable plastic knives (5 - 3 for me, 2 for the bro). I WILL NOT buy breakfast at Disney on the mornings of the races. Bruegger's + PB for breakfast is the routine for me the morning of long runs, and the #1 rule for race day is DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING. I'm sure Disney's race-day breakfast offerings are swell, but they aren't for me
5. Granola bars to take with us so we can eat them on the bus/monorail to the corrals (5 - 3 for me, 2 for the bro)
6. Disposable coffee cups with lids, along with my normal coffee mix-ins (at least 3...probably will bring more to use throughout the trip).
7. A bottle of water for each race...I'll toss it near the corrals and most likely will share both the water and coffee with the bro (3)...in the past I've made coffee in the room and brought it, along with the water, bagels, PB, knives and granola bars for each of us with the food items in a quart-sized Ziploc bag. I carry that with me to the staging area and we eat/drink while waiting in the staging area/while walking to the corrals. It's worked out pretty well.
8. A few Ziploc sandwich baggies (see below)
9. In my pockets during each race: in its own Ziploc baggie: my phone wrapped in a paper towel (recommendation from company that I purchased my running skirts from), in another Ziploc baggie: my Annual Pass & room key (I imagine this is easy to forget) as well as some cash, an extra hair tie and a small packet of Kleenex. SERIOUSLY with the Kleenex - during the 2012 Marathon I came upon a porta-potty with no toilet paper. Um...er...hmm. The Kleenex I had on hand saved me. Shouldn't be an issue at all for the 5K, but you never know...
10. Most importantly (seriously, not joking in the slightest): THE POINT-AND-SHOOT CAMERA and CAMERA CHARGER :worship: if I forget this, Ill weep.

I mean, look at that list ALREADY :faint: And we aren't done yet.

Last year's pile o' stuff:
IMG_5190.JPG

Note that one thing that is NOT on this list is an iPod! I don't run with music very often and I'm certainly not going to do it at Disney. I had my iPod with me *just in case* in 2011 and 2012 (I even made special "oh crap I hit the wall" playlists to pump me up in case I needed them) and I never used it. I run these things for the experience, and part of that is really taking in everything around me. The cheering, the music playing in the parks, talking with other runners...totally worth not bringing my iPod. :thumbsup2

And now we get to the specific races themselves...

5K

Despite the fact that this will be my first 5K at Disney, I know this one is going to be much easier to pack for than the half and full. When I run a 5K race at home, hydration and nutrition really aren't an issue for me since the race itself is over so quickly. Due to that, I think what I have in the above list covers me for the 5K. Like the other races, post-race refreshments are included with registration (fruit, Powerade, bottled water, muffins, etc.), so I should be all set. :thumbsup2

Half and Full Marathon

A wee bit more planning here. Same list as above, but now I need to think about fuel, and just like breakfast, I'm not relying on Disney to provide that for me. There ARE fuel stops on the half and full marathon courses, but they don't pop up as often as I like to take fuel (about every 4 miles) and Disney gives out Clif gels, fruit (most likely bananas) and candy (seriously...I think they had Hershey bars last year :confused3), where I like Gu Chomps. So in addition to the above lists, I'll need:

- 2 vanilla Gu gels to take about 15 minutes before the start of the half marathon (one for bro, one for me)
- 3 bags of strawberry or blueberry pomegranate Gu Chomps to split between the bro and myself for the half marathon
- 2 vanilla Gu gels to take about 15 minutes before the start of the full marathon (one for bro, one for me)
- 6 bags of strawberry or blueberry pomegranate Gu Chomps to split between the bro and myself for the full marathon

:faint: Good thing I'm a good customer at my local running store...they always give me a little discount on fuel. :thumbsup2: As for hydration, Disney's water/Powerade stops are more than adequate for me. There are 9 stops for the half and 20 for the full, and when I train I normally have water every 2 miles, so this works out well. The stops were very well-stocked in 2011 and 2012, so I'm not worried that they will run out. I'm going to alternate Powerade and water at the stops.

Recovery

New for this year, Im going to make sure to bring my foam roller (might look into getting The Grid foam roller at the expo), The Stick and a tennis ball - great for piriformis pain.

So that's it! All the extra running stuff I need to take with me for Marathon Weekend...

:faint: :faint: :faint:

...did I forget anything?!

Side note: The general consensus is that runDisney is going to post waivers TODAY! Excitement! :hyper:

Week 16: Strength training
Thursday, December 13, 2012

Same ol', same ol'. :rolleyes1 Planks were super hard today.

IN OTHER NEWS...

1. Waivers were not posted yesterday. :( I don't know why, but I had convinced myself that yesterday would be the day. The link to the waiver page is floating around, but there's no submit button on the page and I am not HTML-savvy at all, so I don't know how to get the page to submit and pull up my waiver. And I must say, it's pretty annoying when someone (not on this board, a different one) posts the link to the waivers, clearly knows how the pull the waivers up, but won't tell anyone else how to do it. :confused3 I mean, really? Why post the link at all then? Just so you can look like a big man? So annoying. Rant over. :p

2. My new running skirt arrived in the mail yesterday and I LOVE it. It's so cute and looks even better in person than it did online...I'm glad I sent the other one back. So now I have all of my outfits set for the races, but I face a big dilemma - which outfit to wear for each race?! :scratchin Decisions, decisions...

And with that, I just need to point out some countdowns...

- a week from today I'll be on VACATION! (From work, but not really going anywhere...so staycation I guess) :upsidedow
- a week from Saturday I'll start to taper!!!
- my trip starts in 27 days! Woohoo!
- the marathon is one month from TODAY! :yay:

Excitement! :yay: :yay: :yay:

I am getting so excited too! Except that I'm sick now with some horrid sinus/cold/kiss of death thing so my training this week has been non-existent. Its hard to believe that the half marathon will be over in less than a month now :scared1:

I'm so nervous about this race! My first marathon! :-o What if it rains or is freezing? It's been awesome weather for the past two years when I did the Donald, but a friend did the half in 2010, and it was sleeting and freezing! That's my biggest fear!
I'm also worried about my corral. I want to be far enough back that there are no pressures (we were in A for ToT and it was a bit intense!) but not so far back that I have to wait forever. I'm kinda hoping to be in B with my fiancé in C and start with him.
I feel for the poster with the sinus issues. I've been getting a bit "snotty" towards the middle of my runs and spend the last half sniffling! Here's hoping all colds/flus/viruses stay away from all of us runners for the next month so we can train in good health!!!

Did you see that they posted the race program this afternoon??? :yay: I almost jumped out of my seat! Somehow reading through the program makes it that much more real...and more exciting! :yay:

I'm sorry that you're sick...it certainly is that time of year. You're smart to give your body time off to recover. :thumbsup2 And hey, at least you are sick NOW and not the morning of the half!

Speaking from personal experience, Disney is a GREAT first marathon. :thumbsup2 You will love it.

I hope the weather holds up too. If it doesn't...well, we'll just have to tough it out I guess! At least we would end up with a good story to tell. Seriously though, I hope that doesn't happen. :worried:

You know...I don't think they would have an issue with people dropping back in corrals. I know for sure that you are allowed to move back if you want to run with someone that's in a corral behind you (i.e. you could drop back to run with your fiancé), but I'm not sure what they would say if you both wanted to move from A to B or C, but I imagine they would be okay with that. Moving UP in corrals is a different story.

As for snotty runs, (TMI ALERT!!!) I have learned to embrace the snot rocket. :rotfl2: I know, so gross, but it really helps! :thumbsup2 And I have been very good about taking my vitamins and washing my hands like crazy!

And I'm totally with you...here's to staying healthy for the next 27-30 days! :yay:

Did not enjoy this run. Physical I felt pretty good, but mentally I was just so over it. I started the run later than I meant to, and then around mile 5 I stopped to get something out of my shoe (a pine needle) and had trouble getting back into a rhythm after that. Oh well, at least it's done.

Another run that I wasn't that into mentally. The pace was a little quicker because I wanted to make sure I'd be home with enough time to shower and have a snack before my mom came...so it was definitely a little faster than it should have been. It was pretty encouraging to have a decent run after having run 14 miles the previous day though. Obviously running 10 miles the day after a 14-miler is not the same as running a marathon the day after a half, but still...I'm feeling good about the kind of shape I'm in for Marathon Weekend. :)

I definitely hit the wall last night after my 2 longer runs, shopping with my mom and doing stuff around the house. So on the agenda for today...NOTHING. :cloud9: Glorious.

Enjoy your Sunday!

ETA: Oh man, how did I forget?! Waivers and corrals are up! :yay: So I have my Goofy and 5K number...pretty sure the 5K number doesn't mean much. Anyway, I'm in Corral C for Goofy!!! :yay: Very pleased to have moved up one corral from where I was last year. HOWEVER...my brother is in Corral H. :headache: SOMEONE didn't submit his proof of time...looks like I'll be making a trip to Runner Relations. Or I could just be a mean sister and leave him in H. :scratchin We'll see!...mwahahaha.

The marathon is 4 weeks from TODAY!! Woohoo!
