In Search of my Body...Not The One I Ate.. #4 "Inspiring Others... 1 Tiara at a Time"

Morning Ladies and Dan!

Steph!!! It's so good to hear from you :goodvibes I was startin' to worry, ya know. You were totally MIA all day :confused3

Sorry work sucks. Hope they get help there soon. Kind of ironic, isn't it? with so many people losing jobs and they can't find someone to fill that position? :confused3

Enjoy your snow. We are getting all ice. Freezing rain, actually. The trees are coated - it's at the point right now where if the sun came out it would look beautiful....but...too much more and limbs will start coming down ,etc. We just had an ice storm here 2 weeks before Christmas - and some people had no electricity for TWO WEEKS. It was such a mess of broken trees, etc. bringing down power lines. and now...here we go again :headache:

We have not had a snow day guys...in 2 years...

Totally envious.

So. What DO other people think of us? Will we be known for "The Great Milk Wars of 2009" or "Prohibition Era #2 - the No Soda Years" ??? :rotfl2:

I'm firin' up my soda-still....gonna make me some moonshine ;)

Erika- I know that you said that you don't eat meat do the kids? They just had a segment on the today show about kids not eating meat by their own choice! Some eat just chicken and there was one girl that would only eat fish. I tried to watch the whole thing but my kids were screaming for breakfast.

I was so excited that you were back that I forgot that I wanted to comment on this...

I saw that segment too. (and it goes along with my whole tyraid that I'm going to bless you with later ;) ) I found it interesting...then they followed up with the author of the book "Food Matters- a Conscious Guide to Eating"...he was not necessarily a proponant of not eating meat....but of eating less meat....interesting. All very interesting. All stuff that has been rolling around in my brain for months now

Oh - and just so you know....

I finally DID get on that treadmill. It was the greatest mental challenge I've faced in a long time  I did NOT want to do it. Usually, I'll get 15-20 minutes into a run, and my brain will "let go". Not today. I did 35 minutes and got the heck off. (only counting 30 minutes. giving myself a 5 minute penalty for "unsportsman-like attitude":rotfl: )

Hey...dog is fine. Thanks. I didn't know that dogs get a flu-type sickness! Who knew?

Meat...nope, my kids have NEVER had meat at all. Fish, yes. No beef, pork, poultry, etc. And here's the thing. Maybe it is the vegetarianism and maybe not, but my kids do not get sick (yes, we have the genetic stuff like Kelly's kidney disease and Riley's ankles, etc.), but none of my kids has ever had strep throat, only one kid has ever had one of those generic "stomach bugs" that always seem to be going around, etc. If it wasn't for Disney trips, my kids would have perfect attendance at school.

My mom and my friends all think it is the vegetarian diet (because there are just SO many chemicals, additives, and scary junk in meat), and our pediatrician thinks it is wonderful. So, for what it's worth, there it is.

Milk...ok, the reality is that if I could get away with it, I would eliminate milk from my family's diet. It is not necessary for a healthy diet and honestly, I do not think that humans were biologically meant to drink cow's or goat's milk.

Before I dive into this...my background is in Behavioral Science, and while animal behavior is definitely NOT my specialty area, I have taken quite a bit of it has part of my doctoral program. And here's the thing...

(1) Did you know that humans are the ONLY mammal that consciously (by choice) drinks the milk of other mammals? No other mammals drink milk other than that of their own mother (or surrogate as can sometimes happen in the wild).

(2) Humans are the ONLY mammal that drinks milk beyond infancy. Once other mammals ween themselves from their mother's breast milk, they never drink milk again. Why? It is not necessary! That breast milk is nutrient-rich and very developmentally necessary during the first year of life (longer or shorter, depending on the mammal), and that is it.

We do not "need" milk and it is not particularly healthy.

Meat is similar, though I won't go into much there. Other than...our teeth are not designed to rip and tear meat (like other mammals). Same with some other biological characteristics. I just don't think that people were MEANT to eat meat. The biology and physiology shows we weren't.

This brings my to MY rant. The freaking food pyramid! OMG, every child and even every physician is taught that this is the way to eat. Anyone know the history of the food pyramid? It is political more than anything else.

The government decided that we needed some guidelines for nutritional eating. Ok, fine. So they gather a panel of experts to decide what those nutritional guidelines should be. Ok, still fine.

But who do they get to be the "nutritional experts?" The panel of people who devised the food pyramid included (1) the head of the beef industry; (2) the head of the poultry industry; and (3) the head of the dairy industry, among others. So OF COURSE these people are going to say, "MY food needs to be on that pyramid." And thus, the pyramid was formed.

Now, I am not saying that there is no nutritional value in these foods. Some of them have great benefits. But really, meat and poultry and milk are not the be-all, end-all. Looking at the science, the mammalian behavior, you can see that a lot is not necessary.

So next we look at WANTS. Like ok, there is little nutritional value in chocolate. You don't NEED it to live healthy. But I WANT it once in a while (ok, all the time!). So that is when we make decisions..."I really want a piece of chocolate, then I am going to count it and track it and enjoy it."

I have no problem with this. I mean, we HAVE to have the things we want. Just in moderation. Look at me and alcohol. That is a conscious choice for me and I think about it and plan for it, etc.

So, if that is how you feel about whole milk, then I guess it is ok. If you consider that your "treat," then go for it. I just cannot understand why whole milk would be important to someone, but that is just me. And realize that it is not just the fat and calories in the case of whole milk. It really is unhealthy due to the cholesterol factor. But again, alcohol certainly ins't on anyone's Top 10 of healthy things and I drink my share of that.

As for whole fruit vs. 100% fruit juice...there really is a difference here. Go for the fruit. When you take just the juice, you are only taking the natural sugar out of the fruit and leaving all of the fiber (which is the important and healthy part).

Ok, enough. If you have questions, ask. I am happy to answer.

But PLEASE, do not think I am trying to convince anyone to be a vegetarian. I am not. This is the lifestyle choice that I was raised with as a child and then chose again on my own terms as an adult.

Erika, do you eat ice cream or just stick to sorbets and gelatos? Do you all eat yogurt and cottage cheese? How do you get your calcium? Heck, I have a hard enough time getting mine and I drink milk.... :confused3

Amiee - 41lbs is AWESOME!

Can you please make me 31??? I will turn 32 this year but not until May!!

Yes! That has to be fixed. lol. I turn 32 in March  .

So Im still waiting for the Plumber to come - the Landlord just called, hopefully he'll be here today if not he will definitely be here before...Monday  Not good!

That sucks! Kelly, please remind me what your job is? Thanks.

So while I was waiting I decided to check out the TV listings, because new series of my favourite programmes are starting! :woohoo:

Let me break it down for you - Yes, I know I am very behind on these series compared to my US friends!

I don't watch any of your shows, but I do love my shows. Right now, for me its, Amazing Race, Lipstick Jungle, Project Runway and Malcolm in the Middle (DAILY Malcolm. SO FUNNY).

I know what you are thinking - enough already, get off your lazy bummocks and do some exercise instead of watching TV. Fear not my goddess friends, I have a cunning plan

Lol, cunning. I don't think anyone has ever thought of that.

The school started something new this year (which I totally love) instead of the parent waiting or watching and waiting for the school to come around on the new / radio, The school does a mass calling, so at 6 am I was notified that due to bad weather there would be no school! I promptly heard the recording and went back to sleep!

Ours is doing that too. Love it.

I made Stephen hungry at 330 this morning! I made spaghetti sauce last night at midnight and put it into the crock pot. I heard him sniffing the air this morning and I immediately thought of a fire but he said what smells so good! Ah spaghetti sauce! The kids are enjoying the smell to!

My spaghetti comes in a jar already made. Give me the recipe, so I can check it out.

I may look into getting on of the water coolers, I think we would all drink more if we had that!

I have a water cooler at work and I love that cold cold water.

So. What DO other people think of us? Will we be known for "The Great Milk Wars of 2009" or "Prohibition Era #2 - the No Soda Years" ??? :rotfl2:

I'm firin' up my soda-still....gonna make me some moonshine ;)

You are a piece of work Nancy!

Thank goodness.

EriKa - that was very interesting. And it makes me feel better about being grossed out by milk. I am always told, "you should be drinking milk" and I just cant. I barely put any on my cereal.

Erika, do you eat ice cream or just stick to sorbets and gelatos? Do you all eat yogurt and cottage cheese? How do you get your calcium? Heck, I have a hard enough time getting mine and I drink milk.... :confused3

Good question Lisa.

I really have to work today. I hope to post about 75% less than yesterday. That was insane.

Yes, right now I eat dairy. I don't eat ice cream, but only because it is not my treat of choice. If I am going to eat dessert, I would prefer something else (with no nutritional value! :rotfl2: ).

But yes, I do eat cheese (low fat), and I will cook with milk or cottage/ricotta cheeses, etc.

But tofu has 500 times the amount of calcium as skim milk. In fact, all of the following have more calcium than milk:

Almonds and other nuts, almost all beans, and several vegetables (kale and seaweed being the biggest sources).

And if you really want your calcium from a milk source, call Nancy! :rotfl2: Goat's milk is higher in calcium than cow's. But sheep's milk is even higher than goat's.

If you google something like "plant-based sources of calcium" you will get the charts and see where milk compares.

A few more tidbits, then I will shut up....promise!

American women have been consuming an average of two pounds of milk per day for their entire lives, yet thirty million American women have osteoporosis. Drinking milk does not prevent bone loss. Bone loss is accelerated by ingesting too much protein, and milk has been called "liquid meat."

Here is some information from the American Heart Association:

Calcium: Studies have shown that vegetarians absorb and retain more calcium from foods than do nonvegetarians. Vegetable greens such as spinach, kale and broccoli, and some legumes and soybean products are good sources of calcium from plants.

High protein diets appear to lead to increased calcium losses. Calcium requirements for those on lower protein, plant-based diets are believed to be below the usual recommendations.

Most studies have shown that high doses of calcium do not slow bone loss. In fact, many populations with high intakes of calcium also have high rates of osteoporosis, probably because their high protein intake causes significant calcium loss.

The U.S. has the HIGHEST levels of osteoporosis in the world and we are also one of the only countries that places such a strong emphasis on milk and dairy. Africa has almost NO osteo on the continent...except for ONE region. The region that happens to be dairy-producing.

Erika-What did your kids eat when they were toddlers? Miss Delena is so so so picky right now and I am always freaking out that she's not eating a balanced enough diet. She eats lots of fresh fruit, but no veggies. She does drink some milk and will most of the time eat some yogurt and cheese. Chicken is a no go for her now too. I guess I am worried about the protein side of things. She won't eat eggs either. I know alot of this has to do with her age, but I thought maybe you would have some suggestions of other new things I might try.

Amiee-WTG on the loss!! :cool1:

When they were babies, I made my own baby food instead of buying the jar food. I used fresh veggies, steamed them, then put them in the blender with expressed breast milk to mix it up and bump up the protein.

Also, as babies and toddlers (and still today!) I sneak tofu into everything (like the baby food). Tofu has almost no flavor of its own, so it is totally easy get into stuff. Like spaghetti sauce! Just throw the sauce in the blender with tofu and mix it all up...no one knows it is in there. It also goes great in scrambled eggs...just crumble it up right in there. Again, no taste.

The other thing I still do, which is actually really healthy, is Smart Dogs. These are the veggie hot dogs. Fat-free, cholesterol-free, and all natural. My kids LOVE them and they are all soy protein.

I also made them soy-milk-shakes when they were little and that always went over well.

Don't think my kids are great eaters, though. We fight when it comes to vegetables. They eat lots of fruit, so that is good. But for veggies, they only really like the starch-based vegetables of corn, carrots, and peas. Last night we again had the broccoli fight. Not fun. They do eat salad, though, so they get leafy greens. And the reason they like salad is because of the dressing.

We discovered that the kids will usually at least try it if they can dip it or dress it! So I have some ranch-type dressing and they will eat raw carrots, celery, cherry-berry tomatoes, and sliced green and red pepper as long as they can dip it. The girls are really into red bell peppers right now.

The last bit of advice is something my mom did/does with them, so I can't take the credit. Every spring they plant a garden. And it is THEIR garden. They love, love, love watching everything grow. And they are always so excited to eat what came out of their own garden. This is how we get them to eat green beans! But only during August. :rotfl2: The rest of the year, they won't touch them!

So. What DO other people think of us? Will we be known for "The Great Milk Wars of 2009" or "Prohibition Era #2 - the No Soda Years" ??? :rotfl2:
I almost peed myself...we need t-shirts...although with "Milk Wars of 2009" on the shirt...we would either get some sikkos or the La Leche league on our @ss...:rotfl2:
I'm firin' up my soda-still....gonna make me some moonshine ;) [/B]
oohhhh...we got a sassy one in the house tonight...carefull..Paula and her band of @ssless chaps bandits are gonna come steal your stash..
Hey...dog is fine. Thanks. I didn't know that dogs get a flu-type sickness! Who knew?
I did not..but you are a great do g mommy for checking...
Meat...nope, my kids have NEVER had meat at all......

E - that was great info...and I am proud you are concerned about your kiddos..not too many moms are anymore...it is good you know whyyou make the choice....some people don't care what they feed their kids at any level..
But PLEASE, do not think I am trying to convince anyone to be a vegetarian. I am not. This is the lifestyle choice that I was raised with as a child and then chose again on my own terms as an adult.

Of all things...I don't think I had even considered this...you are always respectfull of meat eaters...even Lyz who had Wilbur last year...you were rooting her on for success in the fair...just not so much the bacon part...:lmao:

Know what is sooooo funny...We usually just have 2%...but Baylor needed to gain weight back...animal fat is good for healing his burns..skin growth..he hates the protein drinks they have tried to shove in him...docs recomended whole milk for him...up until recentyly we never bought it...and Treyner bought 2 gallons of whole milk the last time he was sent...so I normally would have posted 2%...:rotfl2: I know...it is not skim...but seriously...I crave milk like someone might crave beer...it is totally my weakness...if I could order it at a bar...I would be just fine :drinking1 ...and any kind...I don't hate any of them...but skim does remind me of water dipped with white crayon...

Okay...off to try and get work done and then hit the Y...Dan is in Denver BTW...since Monday...it will almost be 2 weeks from his leaving and him coming back...and the good news for someone I will marry in 2010...is that I miss him...a lot...

oh....and since we are all seriously contemplating the marathon thingy in March 2010...is there a way to find the date for that...

cause if we get married that month...might as well make it at the same time...so ya all can come...free food and cake ya know...and cordials...just sayin...

Erika, Thanks SO much for the suggestions...:goodvibes She won't touch a green bean, but will eat medium spicy caribbean rice!! :confused3

Kat, I am made your chili, it's been cooking since this morning and smells SO good. It may rival the beer chili I make.

Just got my butt kicked by Jillian, so I can cross exercise off my list for today.
Has anyone done any of the other DVD's from her??

Erika - Thanks for all the great info. All really good points that I had not seriously thought about in the past.

I find myself picking up magazines like Self, Women's Health, etc instead of the usual fashion mags. I guess I am growing up.

All good info though so it is a good thing.

Paula

PS - I am officially disconnecting myself from the chaps references. I get the joke, but it is really so not my thing. :)

Amy,

I have some of her DVD's but I am ashamed to admit that I haven't even opened them yet. Truthfully, they intimidated me. I'll take a look at them this weekend and let you know what they are like. I need to find a workout to do when I am out of town this weekend since I can't meet my trainer. I am more comfortable with my abilities now, so I may attempt the shred. We'll see.

I'll let you know what I find out,
Paula

Hi Gang,

A lot here.

Kelly/Bella - I thought the heat was fixed yesterday! Oh, no! Stay warm!!!

Steph - It is sooo super sweet of you to be praying for Jodi and for my mom. It means a lot. Really and truly. :goodvibes

Milk - I agree with Erika on those points. I have done similar research and truly believe we don't need the dairy we ingest. There are other, better ways to get calcium. But, do I eat dairy? Yes. Do I feed it to my kid? Yes. I'm lazy. What can I say?

That is another hurdle I will hit one day. I am also drawn to the partially raw food lifestyle, because of the wonderful, healthy variety of things you eat. If you ever have a chance to go to a raw food restaurant, do it. They are amazing. I love Pure Food and Wine in NYC.

I"m forgetting things here...

Hmm. Okay, newbies. Lukers. Here's the thing. If you join us, we will support you like nobody's business. We will love who you love, hate who you hate, we will hold you up every step of the way.

But we do expect support in return, and we're not mamby-pamby. It's the internet. We're NICE for the internet! We don't flame people or curse you out! We're like the genteel ladies of the Wild West. Seriously. But, we don't do BS. We don't have time for that, because we give it our all here, when we can, and plead bankruptcy when we can't.

So if you like our style, come be our friend. Sit next to us at lunch. If not, I am sure there is a thread that you will like.

I'm not trying to be rude, I'm not trying to scare anyone off. In fact, I"m saying COME! We probably like you already! But I am not going to apologize or make nice when there's no need to do either.

Rant over.

So, I went to WW today. Up 4.4 from pre-Christmas. I think that's pretty good, considering the total food orgy I had for the last two weeks. I'm happy with that. And then I went to the gym, and the bank and the grocery store. I'm still sad though. I just AM. (If you're just tuning in, my mom has cancer, 5th time, is doing chemo, my BFF is having the a risky pregnancy, and it looks like my BIL is getting divorced. Sadness all around.)

I'm not sad about the weight - please, I'm thrilled. I'm not sad about my mom's chances. I'm not sad, although I am worrying, about Jodi. It's just all of it together. Sadness.

Okay, so let me get this Princess half right. Some of us walk the 13.1, some run. And Dawn, wedding? Babe, how would we make it? I might be totally wrong here, but isn't it on a weekend? The Half? And don't you have to do a weekday wedding? Before 10am? (It's sad how much I know about Disney weddings!) I'm not sure you want any of us sweaty and gross there, anyway. :lmao: In any case, someone explain more about how we walkers can pace. Linky-poo? And Dawn, get married when and where you want. It's your day. Don't bend one more thing in your life around anyone else. (Except Dan, of course!) You do everything this year for YOU.

Hi Liz!

Princess 1/2 is on a weekend. You need to maintain a 16 minute/mile pace. If you get on the dreadmill at all, that's like walking at least at 3.8 for 13.1 miles! I personally find walking superfast to be harder than running/jogging. I know some people who mostly walk the races also run like a minute or 2 out of every mile and that keeps them well ahead of the sweepers (the people who boot you off the course if you are too slow!). I hope that helps a little.

That's perfect. I can do that. Run/walk. Scamper! E, Kat - I'll scamper!!!

Thanks, Amy. Love you!

Did not know about BIL but guessed it...I agree th euppage is small combared to the load you are bearing...and I added you and your mom and Jodi to our prayer group at church...cannot ever hurt to have to many people loving your mom and that baby through these times...and the two (you and Jodi) who need to nurture yourself as well...

Ok - I won't...I was jsutthinking that if I trained for it...and wanted to do it...that i will no way jose be able to apy for 2 tris there in 1 month...March is goingto be the month of the wedding...planning on Disney...and...if at all plausible...some of you attending would be awesome...

We are planning on a Monday date ...that way Treyner only misses 2 days of college...and if I run on a Sat (Good gravy I can't even walk far yet...maybe this is insane) than that would let me run, have a day break for the rehersal and then the wedding...and then the honeymoon...:cool1: just sayin...and I thought actually....training for this might make me very sure that I do not gain weight for the wedding...but actually lose...and be the freakin hottest ever...for the honeymoon...:rolleyes1 (see thinking of Dan...have I said he has been gone for 7 days...and does not come back for 6 more...? It is killing me.)

There is actually not a lot that I have to do for the wedding...esp. by that point...it will be simple...and Disney takes care of most of it...and if Carsyn could do this with me...and then we have a spa day...that would be the best day of my life with her...

Maybe run and have the wedding later in the week, really depends on Treyner's college break...we know when the rest of the kids have theirs...

I do need to have it for me...and you are right...need to stop obsessing over hurting everyone/anyone and someone...cause it consumes my day sometimes...I need a lil more of Jillian to offset my Bob...:rotfl:

Cr@p...they boot you off...how humiliating...that would just be the end all...do these people have a clue what they are doing? I would want to know exactly that before I made an @ss out of myself in front of everyone...taking 3 days and all...

I was wondering how long after that are you feeling icky if you do...or are you so accustomed to it that it is no big deal by then...

Do not want to get married in a few days and feel like I got hit by a car...
