I totally agree! Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind seeing a GOOD authentic Mexican joint in DCA. YOu would think with CA having such a hispanic history that there could have been a little more focus on the culture and food.
And you know what else JUST occurred to me..... DCA never included anything about the gold rush era. That seems to be pretty important in the history of CA as well... Hmmmm.... oh well I guess.
That's true! Now that you mention it, you are right - they did not include any Gold Rush stuff. Doubtful they will now, either. There are a couple of things associated with California that they haven't delved into TOO much (as much as they could), and now with the revamping of the park, who knows what it will end up being in 4-5 years?
Back to food! Now, I think mostly everyone will concur that DLR as a whole has vastly improved their quality of food in the last 15 years or so. It is still not as good as you would find at a mom & pop place, but it is SO much better than what it used to be back in the old days. Having a McD's there kidn of was a step backwards, I think, even though people are familiar with it and people like familiarity. But you are 100% right - California has a very rich Hispanic history and currently high population of Hispanic residents, and even though I don't personally like Mexican food, most people I know DO love it a lot and they all say that the little tiny stands and corner places serve the best food - not the 'chain' restaurants. So it would serve DCA well to put in some really great, authentic, homemade Mexican food...but they won't.
I am an Italian food nut. In the Farmers Market (pre-The Grove days), over here near where I live, there used to be a little family-run Italian place called Tony's in one of the food courts in FM that had been there for decades, and they were struggling because everyone was going to the Italian place at the other end of FM, or they were eating other types of food in the Market. And when The Grove moved in, Tony's started losing customers altogether. Eventually, they closed up shop and moved away, never to reopen. But let me tell you, this little lady who ran Tony's for its entire duration and hired all her family members to work there, made THE BEST meatball sandwiches I have EVER had! I mean, I cannot even describe how good these sandwiches were. Just scrumptious and hearty. Way better than Numero Uno or any other meatball sandwich I have had at any Italian delivery joint. I would get like 6 of them at a time and take them home and just scarf down meatball sandwiches for days! The fact that she is no longer in business, or that she isn't running her restaurant at DLR is a crime! She should be making big money off of that food!
