We had signed up for the DVC at SSR while we were on our vacation last week. We did some numbers and find that it is expensive. We have been to Disney twice in one year but we dont know how we are really going to be in the following years when money could be a little tight. We are now a family of 3 with a young little girl (DD3). Should we cancel the DVC? We calculated maintenance to be around $15 /point in 2054.. Is it worth it?? :sad2:

You certainly can cancel the DVC. There is a time period in which you have to do that, so call your guide. I'm not so sure how you calculated what maintenance will be in 49 years though, and I also don't know how you can calculate what your income is likely to be then. The best advice I can give is if you can afford it now, you will probably be able to afford it then. I think DVC is best for those who travel to Disney at least once or twice a year and who lie to stay in deluxe accommodations. If you are happy with All Stars, then DVC might not be for you.

Only you know the right answer for your family.

My opinion:

DVC is a prepaid vacation program - an expensive one. Money to pay for it should come out of discretionary income. Where are you with other financial goals - a home, insurance? retirement, college? If you aren't satidfied with where you are with those goals, DVC can wait. If you buy DVC and find it isn't right, you will lose more than if you wait - even if the price goes up before you are ready to buy.

In the meantime, you can rent points and still enjoy DVC accomodations for about the same (or less) than a moderate.

Good luck with your decision.

Best wishes -

DVC isn't for everyone but if you are going to calculate how much maintenance will be in 2054, you should also calculate how much a regular WDW hotel room will be. But if you have any second thoughts at all, make sure to cancel by the deadline.

Hmmmm - best for those who lie to stay in deluxe accomodations. I always wondered how all those people could afford the GF and the Poly Conceirge so often and now I know! :teeth:

Sorry - couldn't resist, LOL

Think positively. You wanted to do it at the time, you are just having buyer's remorse. The vast majority of people who purchase say it is the best thing they ever did. I don't know what your situation is, but instead of worrying that money could be a little tight, enjoy your life and work hard, and money may very well not be a problem.

By the way, you will probably be making $300,000 in 2052 so $15 a point will be peanuts. Milk will cost $20 bucks a gallon, though.

Diane - in your post you said: "I think DVC is best for those who travel to Disney at least once or twice a year and who lie to stay in deluxe accommodations. If you are happy with All Stars, then DVC might not be for you." ;)

Just having a little fun with a typo - I'm sure that most everyone knows you meant to type "like to stay in deluxe accomodations." :)

It is only worth it if you plan on going to WDW every year and staying in a Deluxe resort. If you had planned on just staying in a Value or Moderate resort previously or don't have plans to go to WDW every year (or every couple of years), it's not worth it money wise. BUT you are the only one who can decide if you've done the right thing or not. You know your financial condition. IMO if there is any doubt in your mind, I'd cancel. You can always buy in later. Someone mentioned you might be suffering buyers remorse, that's true but then again you may have bought based upon a spur of the moment decision after seeing a DVC Guide's sales presentation.

FWIW - We've been very pleased with our DVC purchase (and subsequent add-on). But it took us about two years of thinking about it before joining.

Its a lot of money and if you think it might be better used for more important things, (children's school tuition, new house, new car, etc ) than I would encourage you to bail. If you have those others items covered, DVC can be a great way for a family to vacation and have fun together. Good luck with your decision!

We calculated that it's worth it if we plan to go every *other* year and stay in a deluxe resort. That's because as a family of four, with kids of different sexes who are approaching adolescence, we'd prefer to have a 2-bedroom suite. Compared to paying cash for such accomodations, it was less expensive to buy half the points we'd need, then bank-and-borrow for alternate year trips. We'll hit our break-even point in another couple of years, after which the rest is gravy.

If you've taken the calculations out as far as 2054 for maintenance fees, did you happen to see what happens to hotel rates that far out? Rack rate at a moderate will be about $1550. per night!! Not including taxes/fees.
None of us know what the future may bring, we can only assume. If you can afford DVC now, it's feasible you'll be able to afford it in the future.
My DH and I have been considering DVC since the fall. I'll PM you some additional info that we've come across while researching the purchase.

I woke up in cold sweat the night we purchased into DVC. I was shocked when we returned to UK that we could not get cheap flights to Orlando.

But we didn't cancel and I have woken up everyday since October with a smile on my face.

WE WILL HAVE A LIFETIME OF TRIPS INSTEAD OF JUST A TRIP OF A LIFETIME.

Hope you have a great time with DVC

As the mother of 3 children, the extra space is worth the cost. Before DS was born we stayed at the All Star resorts. Now as a family of 5, we couldn't stay there. I love my kids dearly, but to be in the same little room with them for a week would make me insane. Now I can leave them in the living room while I seek peace in the master bedroom, if not the jacuzzi. For me it's all about space. ;)

Thanks everyone for all the great responses. We realized that things 40 sumthing years from now will definitely be different than today's $$'s.
We like the fact that we can also go to other places besides Disney. Does anyone have any experiences with II? And what do you think are the negatives of DVC? (like not being able to get rooms at 7 months out.. etc..)
Thanks for all input!

Buying DVC is only financially feasible for those that would go anyway, stay on property and minimize weekend use. Anything less than about every other year will make it hard to use up points yourself without losing them or having to find alternatives. It is unreasonable to buy with the idea of using points for II, CC, DC, DCL or for long weekends. It's also not a good idea to buy if you have to finance. I'd cancel then reconsider your options while you still can.
