In Every Run That Must Be Done; There is an Element of Fun (comments welcome)

I think my cats would take issue with that suggestion 😸😸 My average will go up once spring finally comes and I can go out to spend time with my chipmunks, but walking around on grass for 10-15 minutes at a time still doesn’t quite cover the beating that feet take on a Disney trip.
FWIW - we got a dog almost three years ago now. He is our first ever dog, a lab with enough energy to win "the most engetic dog of the day" award at Doggie Daycare... We have always been a cat family and also have two cats. So we were fairly anxious about adding a dog. I can tell you that it took a little time, but they get along pretty well now. Our dog, as a puppy, wanted to be friends right away and the cats wanted nothing to do with him! But over time they sort of developed patterns, territories and neutral ground in the house. Now they sleep on the same dog bed together pretty regularly, share each other's toys and water dishes. But Toby our male cat will suffer no fools and when Kai (our dog) is getting to excited Toby will hiss and swat at him. Then Kai cowers and whines and avoids Toby for a few days. It is really kind of funny as Toby is all of 12 pounds and Kai is 85 pounds! All this to say, it has worked out and Kai accounts for at least 20 miles walking a week for me. Plus we all love him to death. 🐱🐶🐱

The goal of today was to get a slushie with liquor. It was harder to accomplish than expected. I was going to get lunch from the Refreshment Outpost and get an Outpost Lemonade (frozen lemonade and vodka) But just before I got to the counter, their card readers went down 😢 So I moved on to the American pavilion, where I was going to try a lemonade slushie with bourbon. But their slushie machines were down 😭😭😭 So I just got food and suffered total sobriety 😂 I did finally get a hard slushie in the early evening after dinner in HS

Anyway, I walked around World Showcase and looked at flowers, but not everything was ready for F&G yet, so I’ll do more of this in April.

After Epcot, I went to Disney Springs via Beach Club, as planned. There was no VQ for Gideon’s, just a 15-20 minute line! And I discovered that Gideon’s sells insulated bags for $12, with an ice back to keep your treats from melting (on future visits, they’ll just sell you a fresh ice pack or 2). This bag was handy for protecting the cookies, and I eventually used it as my second carry-on on the way home. And the ice pack was used on my ankle as needed throughout the trip, so double bonus! I bought 3 cookies for myself, and 3 for my grandparents.

After Disney Springs (where I didn’t buy anything but cookies—my wallet was very impressed with my restraint) I headed back to the hotel for a rest before heading to HS for dinner, Fantasmic, and After Hours. I fully admit that dinner for me at Mama Melrose is not really worth it for the price of a Fantasmic package (I wanted Sci-Fi) but I really didn’t want to have to stand in line for a good seat. I ended up being the first package person to enter the theatre, so I got a front row center seat. Yes, I had to sit there for over an hour, but I had my Kindle, so it was fine. And it wasn’t windy, so I didn’t have to worry about getting wet during the show.
339C3F3C-70B6-4E0F-8E50-118CC8AB7600.jpg

After Fantasmic, I went and killed time before the AH watching the projection shows. I was a little annoyed that Disney decided to extend the regular hours to butt right up against the AH, so there was no time to clear the final day guests out of the lines. I planned to start the AH in Toy Story, since one of my priorities was Slinky Dog, because I’ll never stand in the regular line for it, and it never fits into my G+ days properly. I did Midway Mania (92,100, accuracy 67%), then walked over to Swirling Saucers to kill time waiting on Slinky to clear out. I still ended up burning almost a half hour on Slinky, but I didn’t want to have to come back later.

EF9F7276-1478-449D-B05B-96996EFA7985.jpeg

After Slinky, and another round on Midway Mania (124,100, accuracy 71%), I headed back to Batuu for Smuggler’s Run. When I got to the party delegator guy and he asked “how many?” I said “one, and I would like to not be an engineer please” and that was fine. I don’t do that during regular hours because I know they need to get people through as efficiently as possible, but I figured it wouldn’t be a problem during AH. I got paired with a kid as the left/right pilot, and I got up/down, which is good for me. It’s so much more fun to do this ride as a pilot, because you can actually see what’s going on.

I was hoping to do Rise after Smuggler’s, but the wait was still showing as 50 minutes, and with how long the ride is after the wait, it would’ve eaten all the rest of the night and I didn’t think that was the best use of my time. I got some snacks in front of Muppets, and then did Runaway Railway. Finally, it was time to head to Tower of Terror. On the way, Donald and Daisy walked through the streets, dressed for a night out. They stopped and did a whole photoshoot with one of the PhotoPass folks, so that was fun to watch. I stopped to get some more pictures in my cute Edna Mode Dress Shop dress.

Tower of Terror was a walk on, which meant that the wait time was set to 13 minutes
FC2937CD-D4B6-46D6-8DA1-D3F618796D92.jpg

Afterward, I headed out to the bus, and back to my resort. It took a while to get to sleep, but I had sort of planned on that. I was hoping to be tired on Thursday so I could get to sleep early before the 5K. Spoiler alert: this did not work 😄

EXPO DAY!

I had my alarm set properly for this day so I could buy a lightning lane for Flight of Passage, because I love that ride but I hate its line. Since I was taking rD transportation to the expo, there wasn’t any hurry to get going after 7am, so I just kind of lazed around the room. I caught the first bus to the expo, which arrived at 9:17, and left just a couple minutes later, so I actually made it to the expo before the official CrD early window closed (not that it really matters for Platinum, since they have to let us into the merch building for our bibs) I got up to the platinum pickup desk, and they couldn’t find my bag! 😱😱 It’s like, how hard is alphabetizing? There are only so many platinum bags there, it shouldn’t be hard to find mine—right in the middle of the middle of the alphabet 😅😅 After about 10 minutes, I heard the announcement that merch would be opening soon to the VQ folks and I was like, “can I go shop and come back later?” And that was fine, so I went down and shopped. I got a “Be Bold” t-shirt because I like the message, a pin set because I think I’ve gotten the pin set for each weekend so far, and a Loungefly bag and 2 pair of ears because I lack impulse control 😂😂 I finished checking out and packing my shopping bag just as Princesses Minnie and Daisy arrived for pictures, and the lines were reasonable, so I grabbed those.

After pictures, I went back upstairs and had to wait another 5-10 minutes for them to find my bag (what were they doing for the 30 minutes I was shopping? 🙃🙄) Finally, they found it, I checked that all 4 (correctly sized) shirts and both bibs were in there and headed up to the exhibitor part of the expo. I found a great headband to go with my Maleficent costume, and another visor to go with one of my Disneyland costumes.

Look at these shiny purple dragon scales! How could I resist??

I stopped by the Fit2Run booth and did their foot-mapping thing for the heck of it. Sadly, the insoles that I got were too thick to fit in my shoes with my feet, so I ended up returning those on Saturday. Finally, I went to the Pandora booth and decided to get the Princess Weekend charms. With my wallet considerably lighter and my shopping bags considerably fuller, I caught a bus back to the resort and dumped off my stuff, and immediately turned around to head to AK. One I was there, I decided that I had enough time before my Flight of Passage reservation to grab lunch at Restaurantosaurus. I did FoP, and then chose to leave AK, rather than walking around more.

I grabbed a couple selfies with flowers because I like to send them to my grandma when she’s stuck in a snowy wasteland 😂😂

Being near one of the quieter pools was really nice. I brought my kindle along to just sit and read in the fresh air for a while before I hopped in and splashed around for a while. I even swam a few truncated laps in an empty corner of the deep end.

5K DAY!!

Getting to sleep went terribly, but I managed to get some. And I got up on time and was ready for the first bus. 3/4 of a mile walk to the start area (with a selfie stop at SE), and I was ready for the meet-up. I beat everyone there!
7AB2E58A-DCC3-4B6B-AF3C-016DB6D2175C.jpg

Eventually, @DopeyBadger and G arrived, and @azrivest and her family, and everyone else that I can’t remember because my brain is like that. It really makes the waiting go faster to have people to talk to. I made my way to corral B and ended up kind of in the front of the middle, which is further back than I would prefer. Someone in the corral asked to get a picture of my Maleficent staff, which was cool. It weirded me out for a second though because she asked me by name and my brain was like “uhhhh…do I know her?” But then I remembered that my name is on my bib 🤣🤣

After what always seems like forever, I got to start the race. I clearly forgot what running at Disney is like, because I spent a lot of this race resisting the urge to just smack people with my staff 😅😅 I didn’t stop for any characters because either I already had pictures with them (Mushu/Mulan, Tiana/Naveen/Louis), I didn’t care about them (Duffy), the line was too long for my taste (Cinderella/Charming/Perla), or I didn’t even see the stop (Knight Donald). This seems to be a theme for me with Disney 5Ks. Maybe it’s good for me to use the 5K as kind of an “oh yeah, this is how racing at Disney is” and a way to get all the nerves and stuff out.

After the race, I got a picture with Snow White

And with Cinderella’s Carriage

I love the little detail of Susie Mouse sitting on the rear axle (I only know her name because of the sign by the carriage)

I got some good on course pictures. I’m glad I took the time to paint the crow’s beak orange, it really pops in these night shots.

84EA2350-F790-4F59-85FC-DF53DDC4FDC5.jpg

After the race, I got cleaned up at the resort, probably ate something, and headed to Hollywood Studios. I had a Lightning Lane for Tower of Terror to start my day (as I usually do on a HS day). Then I ate some lunch, went to Beauty and the Beast (which I’ve never done before—the timing just never hit right) and did a Midway Mania Lightning Lane (score: 89,900; accuracy 66%). I grabbed a Lightning Lane for Star Tours, and then headed out. I was pretty tired and wanted to rest and spend some time by the pool again.

I got my 10K costume all set by 6 and I was asleep by 8:30. Then my grandma called me at 10:20 to let me know she was in the hospital with pancreatitis, but was going to be fine and would be going home in a couple hours (news which really could have waited until the morning, since A) she was going to be fine and B) there was nothing I needed to do). I was able to get back to sleep fairly quickly though.

Once again, I had no trouble getting up and getting ready on time to catch the first bus. I was through security and getting my selfie with SE at 3:11am.

I was first to the meetup again, and hung out until it was time to head to the corrals. I wanted to get closer to the front this time for (hopefully) better picture lines. I also got to sit down and rest my feet, which was really helpful. I was at the back of the first wave of B—the separating ribbon was right behind me.

I had a good race. Honestly, it was probably the best 10K I’ve had at Disney. Usually, I end up not enjoying the 10K very much, and I don’t know why. But I felt good during and after this one. As I shared in the Princess thread, my running playlist had a sense of humor (as it often does) As I was exiting Hollywood Studios and heading toward everyone’s favorite narrow path, it played ‘Highway to Hell’ and while I was on the path, it played ‘Devil in Disguise’ 🤣🤣

I got a bunch of character pictures, and I don’t recall missing/skipping any that I cared about.

I was excited for the Pocahontas/Merida spot, since I’ve never had race pictures with either one.

As usual, I did a pretty good job connecting with the PhotoPass folks (aside from when people jump in front of me 🤬) So I got some good on-course pics too.

Why yes, I did almost manage to get a little jump pic on the Boardwalk (if you look close, both of my feet are off the ground 😄😄)

And…DONE!
1678900295541.jpeg

After the race, I didn’t feel like waiting for any of the characters, so I just changed my shoes, ate my food, and headed for the bus. I was nodding off on the bus, so I decided that I didn’t really need to go to Magic Kingdom after all. I decided to rest/nap for the morning before heading over to the expo to return the insoles I bought, since when I tried them in my walking shoes, there wasn’t really room for my foot, and it made the sides of the heels hit me in a bad spot. So I headed for the expo around noon.

I got my return finished, and had plenty of time to kill, so I grabbed a picture with the Cinderella carriage that they had at the expo, which is different from the one they had at the races.
13406980-0F12-4677-B7E6-4ABA564C9FC9.jpeg

I caught an expo bus to Beach Club for the DisMeet, and ordered myself some lunch. I had a great time hanging out with everyone—it’s really nice to have a little time to socialize and relax. Once the meet broke up, I walked to Hollywood Studios to stretch my legs and catch a bus back to Movies.

I got everything set for Sunday (but apparently didn’t take a FlatMe picture) and tried to get to sleep early. I don’t think I fell asleep as early as I did Friday, but I managed some sleep.

I'm glad you had good races. You got a lot of great photos, for sure! The Maleficent headband is awesome!

HALF MARATHON DAY!!

I was slightly late getting going, and had to catch the second bus, which left all of 2 minutes after the first and had about a half dozen people on it. All of the All Stars had buses lined up out to the main road (and beyond—Sports had buses on the main road). I got to Epcot at 2:39, and took my SE selfie at 2:44.
A6DB4E73-A852-48A1-9725-3D96B7F96AB0.jpg

The lines were really short for some of the characters, so I hopped in and grabbed pics with Cinderella and Raya.

I headed over to the meetup spot and eventually got some company. Then it was time to head to gear check and the long walk to the start. I was EXTREMELY annoyed that they forced me to check my bag in Truck #1–the furthest from the finish line. Don’t they know how tired I’m going to be later?? It seemed like a dumb system to me. I started the walk to the start at 3:38 and finally got there right at 4. Which put me only a couple people behind the front of B—right where I wanted to be. I got to sit down and rest for a good long while before it was time to stand up.

I crossed the start at 5:04 and made it to the Rey selfie spot 4 minutes later.

Then I was very happy to get the other half of the Pocahontas/Merida photo op this time.

8B9A30EA-F197-4720-89FC-502239601B75.jpeg

As I was on this stretch, I got to see the lead rollDisney folks, the lead males runners, and the lead female runner (who I assume was the eventual winner) go by in the opposite direction. Then it was the entrance to Magic Kingdom parking!! Woohoo! 5:55 am: I was feeling WAY better than during Princess 2022.
6F1DFD60-7A82-4309-9D27-EBAA9A9E1A72.jpeg

There are some seriously dark spots on the course from TTC to MK. Also, I was so mad that I missed the photo op for Beast! But the sign guy at the end of the line had his sign facing the wrong way (we know you’re the end of the line, dude—just show us what the line is for!) and I was on the wrong side of the crowd to ask anyone in line. And of course, by the time I could see the character, it would’ve taken some seriously dangerous backtracking along the course to get in line. I had another funny song coincidence as I was coming into the MK bus area—my playlist decided that I needed to hear ‘No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn’, which is a fairly apt song for any runDisney weekend, don’t you think?

I saw Mickey and Minnie at the train station at 6:31!

2 minutes of cheering crowds later, I was at the end of Main Street, grabbing a selfie with the Castle!

Just for reference, this is a comparison of 2022’s Castle selfie and 2023’s Castle selfie. Which Maureen looks happier? 😁😁

And stopped at the Teacups for a picture with Alice and friends. They had the Teacups running, but weren’t letting anyone ride 😭😭 I totally would’ve done it though.

I continued on through my non-Teacup-riding sadness and got through the Castle. I was all the way to the left, just like you’re supposed to be, and some twit barged in front of me and ruined my shot 🤬 But I got down the ramp and got in line for a proper castle picture at 6:48

Entering the backstage area, I would have loved to stop for the villains shot, but that line was just too much for me. And it was coming on 7am, so I needed to do my Lightning Lanes. I managed to grab an individual LL for Guardians after 2pm (because the VQ line is just too long for my tired feet) and a Ratatouille LL for after that. If I could’ve gotten a little earlier Remy, it would have been better, since I would be coming in the International Gateway from Beach Club after lunch, but I did the best I could while also staying in motion.

I stopped for a picture with Anna and Elsa, despite a slightly long line, because I wanted a break before entering the hell that is Cone Alley.

You can really see how foggy it was getting as the sun was rising

Finally, we were getting closer to Epcot, which meant it was time for the dreaded cloverleaf up to the Mile 10 marker (which is my favorite point, because there’s only a 5K left and we do those in our sleep 😄🤪) and then the long ramps to Epcot. I was ready to be DONE and off my feet at that point, and you know how I hate how the ramps get so congested, so I just hopped in the grass on the left side and blasted (well, relative to the folks still on the pavement) up those straightaways whenever I had the energy. So glad that I practice running hills so I can do this with (relative) ease. The only bad parts were when there would be walkers in the grass. Like, what are doing to me?!?

Anyway, time for the cheering crowds of Epcot and the end of the race (also, recovery shoes and breakfast 😋😋)

I got some selfies with topiaries!

Simba is looking down at me and wondering *** I’m doing running 13 miles in the Florida humidity (you and me both, fuzz ball 😂😂)

The angle got a little awkward on this one because I had to make sure Chip & Dale made it in (see my 10K post about stopping for chipmunks)

Final Stretch (though I wish the lady’s shoulder weren’t there)—I swear I was happy and smiling for this part, but the camera guy caught me mid-yay! so I look annoyed or something 😄😄😄

And…FINISHED!!

I survived the ridiculously long walk through the finish stuff and all the way to Truck #1 to get my bag. I finally got to sit down, take my shoes off, and eat something other than gummy bears. Then it was time to get on the bus. The line was daunting (it’s hard to see, but there’s also a whole section of organized queue up by the buses, so the line is even longer than it seems), and I was debating whether it would be faster to hobble the 3/4 of a mile to the regular Epcot buses. Shockingly, it only took 7 minutes until I was on a bus back to the All Stars.

I got back to my room, soaked in a hot bath for a while, rested a little, and then hopped on a bus to Hollywood Studios so I could catch the Skyliner over to Beach Club for my end-of-race-weekend tradition of lunch at Beaches & Cream. I got a burger, fries, and a deluxe shake with a cupcake on it. This turned out to be not the greatest thing for me because I spent a couple hours not sure if it was going to settle in my system. Also, I apparently had a bad batch of underwear (sorry if this is TMI) and the elastic was slightly exposed on the leg, so it was rubbing me raw. After lunch, I headed to the Beach Club market to see what I could get to save the day. I got moleskin patches and a sewing kit with the cheapest scissors ever (but they miraculously worked) and stopped in the bathroom to cut a strip and apply it to my leg. I was able to make it through the remainder of the day without having to go all the way back to my resort just to change.

I had a lot of time, so I leisurely made my way to Cosmic Rewind, hoping that it wouldn’t be a mistake to ride while I was so full (I was fine, but I did need to take a break in the cafe afterward). I rode Cosmic Rewind twice this trip and got ‘Disco Inferno’ both times 🫤🫤 Then I headed toward Ratatouille, and stopped for a picture with Aurora on the way.

After Ratatouille, I was headed for the front of Epcot to catch the monorail to MK, and I was able to stop for Mary Poppins, because how could I not?

Princess Weekend Trip Report: Sunday, Feb 26 (pt 4)

Stats of the day: 50,151 steps (34,967 rD-related), 22.21 miles

HALF MARATHON DAY!!

I had been stacking Lightning Lanes at MK for the early evening. I wanted to get the Cinderella photo op I missed out on at W&D due to the weather, and I also grabbed one for meeting Ariel at her grotto.

But before I could meet Cinderella, I met Elena, who I don’t really know much about, but it’s not like you can just skip her.

Here’s Cinderella! The CM handling the pictures was a bit…creative, so I have a bunch of pictures on my phone of this interaction at odd angles. But she got some good shots too.

I had also snagged a LL for Buzz Lightyear and I did this between meet & greets (scored 100,800)

The lighting is so weird in Ariel’s Grotto that the phone pics aren’t great, but the ones from the automated box camera are better. But I accidentally ended up with someone else’s photo’s instead of mine, so I had to contact PhotoPass. Luckily, since I had the phone pics, I knew exactly when I was there and could show them exactly what I looked like, so I had them a few days after I got home.

I was getting pretty tired (it was past 6 by the time I met Ariel) so I headed for the exit. But on the way, I saw that the wait for Mickey was only 5 minutes (it was closer to 15, but it’s Mickey, and it’s air-conditioned, so 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️) I’ve never gotten to hug Mickey before, so I had to do it.

I got back to my resort, took another hot bath, and crashed.

Half Marathon—once again, look how fast the end of the race was! I would love to be able to put up that kind of pace for the whole thing!
