In a bit of a panic about passports....ack!

We recently booked our first Disney cruise, which departs in less than a month now. Our 75 day booking window opened and neither DH (renewal) or DD (no passport) had even applied yet. We were still able to fill out all of the online check-in stuff and get our PAT. I just put "Photo & Government ID" for both of them. Once DD's came in (at about 50 days out) I edited her info. DH's just came in at about 30 days out, and the system is allowing me to edit it.

I would imagine that if it were actually required to have that info in there at 75 days they wouldn't allow you to edit it on your own after that. Plus, how would people who book the cruise after the PIF date be able to sail if they couldn't get their info over?

At worst it might take a couple of extra minutes to check in at the Port. But I doubt even that would happen. :)

The complication is that this is a British Isles cruise and they need the passport, It isn't a closed loop cruise from the US.

75 days is the paid in full date. I don't think you need to have your identification completed by then.

Your passport number will remain the same just change the expiration date to 10 years (or 5 years for child).

I just went through this with the Alaska cruise. My in laws didn't have access the their passports when I wanted to do online check in. I was able to enter old numbers as previous posters said and update when we found the passports. Also, on the AL cruise, we were able to chose "government ID" temporarily to allow me to do check in.

It turned out to be no problem bypassing the screen on DCL website and then coming back later to update.

No, it doesn't. The number and expiration date both change with new/renewal passports.

I just received a renewed passport and the number is identical to the previous passport. Only the expiration date is changed based on when I renewed.

I'll have to check mine (recently renewed). I know my passport number on the my last passport is not the same as the one previous to that. But I can't say for sure whether my new one is the same or different than my most recent "old" one.

I just received my renewed passport last month and my new passport number is different than the old passport number.

I recently applied for new passports for my daughters. Applied April 4th, received new passports April 15th. (!). We used regular service, no expediting.
So it seems they're moving pretty fast currently.

I can't remember if my passport number was different, but children's numbers definitely change because you can't renew them. I'm actually going to let my son's expire because he turns 16 five months after the expiration and we have no trips planned around then.

Every website I can find says yes, the numbers DO change. This is the explanation given on flyertalk when someone questioned it: Passport numbers are like the VIN numbers in cars. The number is attached to the car, not the owner. When you get rid of the car, the number goes along with it. You don't transfer the number to a new car. The passport is the same; it's not your number, it's the passport's number.

I renewed my passport last year and the number changed.

I agree with PPs who said to just update the expiration date to do the online check in and then update the numbers when the new passports arrive.

We booked a GTY Panama Canal Cruise last August. We, too, did not have passports 75 days out. It was more like 30 days by the time they came in. We simply couldn't check in until they arrived. Other than that, there were no repercussions. We had a great cruise! Relax and call DCL. I'm sure it will all be fine.

OP

did you know you can check the status of your passports on the State Dept website? And sign up for e-mail notifications as they move thru the process? I recommend signing up for the e-mail notices. IME I got notices much more timely than what the website status reported (last time I did this, you could sign up for the e-mails AFTER your record was entered into the system)

Thank you for posting the link.. we are cruising in December and our passports expired..

Ours isn't a closed loop cruise either. It's a repo from the US to Canada.

In any case, I just updated my husband's passport info last night with less than a month to go until our cruise, with no issue.

We are waiting on my daughter's new passport to arrive. I just put in her old number with a made up expiration date. DCL doesn't seem to do any independent verification. I'm sure when you actually check in at the port, they will, but for the online thing, it took whatever I put in.

The State Department also has a website where you can check the status of your passport application if you are curious: https://passportstatus.state.gov/opss/OPSS_Status_ip.asp

We just did our online check in and both my kids passports are expired. We plan to renew, just haven't done it yet. I just put in some arbitrary future date for their expiration number and will call when we get them to update the info. We have had an error in the past and it was no problem to call and update.
