Ds, who is 7 and in 2nd grade, is having a hard time at school with impulse issues, out of his seat and talking (allot).
We have had Nero testing done on him and he came in with sensory issues, high anxiety and impulse issues and some few other things (that we aren't having problems with at this time). They pretty much grouped him POD-NOS (?).
Stimulants don't work on him (makes him unhappy and angry). We are doing a non-stimulant and its working great minus the above issues.
Looking for things you may have tried that have worked. Things we are doing right now is a behavior mod. chart (started within the last week) seems to be working half and half and he goes to counseling.
Thanks a bunch

I too have a DS (7 - 2nd grade). He has Asperger's Syndrome - or HFA depending on the day they do the testing.

There are quite a few great people over on the DisAbilities board with some really great information. You may also want to post over there. :)

We do the behavior chart, everyday that he gets a sticker at school he can pick something small at home - choice or dinner, going to the playground for 15 minutes or his favorite dessert that night. We change it up so he never knows what the carrot will be for the day until it is done. Somedays it works...Some days it does not.

He has a half ball to sit on so that he can move and not be distracting, he has done weighted bags on his lap so that he has some sensory input from that (5-10 lb. bags of rice in a hand sewn bag). Fidgit toys have worked in the past so he can keep his hands going rather than talk.

We are now in a chewing phase and he has actually been allowed to chew gum in school. This is a candy free/soda free school.

Hope you find some suggestions that work for you! :)

Ds7 does well with positive reinforcement, and he had a great teacher last year, who's class motto was "think before you do." He's most likely ADHD, like his brother, who outgrew the hyperactivity aspect around the 5th grade. I think sports have helped him a lot (3 teams this season, plus TKD) - not only does he not tackle during flag football anymore, he's less likely to beat the cr@p out of someone who tackles him (BTDT).

Thank you! Ds also had a great teacher last year. This year is a little different, although his teacher is sweet and I really like her, the way she runs the classroom for 7 and 8 year olds I think is a little off.
I have heard other parents say she should be a 'older grade teacher'. Although, this isn't an excuse for his behavior, it does make a difference in him. Last year he wanted to always please the teacher, this year I think he is been in trouble so much that he has gotten the "I can't please her anyway, so who cares' attitude.
What sports have you found that has helped your son? I'm thinking of putting him in basketball this fall and he wants to do football, but, that won't be until next year.

I would start by asking if he can use a wedge for his seat. My son could never sit still so they began using one at his Early intervention play group when they did circle time. It let him "move" without actually getting up and "moving". It helped so much that he doesnt need it anymore now that he is in "school"( not a actual classroom but he receives therapy 3 times a week.
