Waterproof/Bug proof zippered mattress cover. I sent one with DD last August. My thought process was really more for keeping whatever might be on the mattress away from her. She lived in Commons last semester and was very happy there. A side note: the DCP has been an awesome experience, she has met so many very special people now friends, she has worked hard but had lots of fun - hey she extended. I think it will be a year she will cherish.
This semester she was transferred to Vista Way. Last on her and her roommates choices. They had many friends who lived there last semester and knew they didn't want to be sent there. They were notified they were being put in a 2 bedroom with two other girls who had extended. Upon arrival found out it was next door to a friends apartment last semester - not comforting since she knew the condition it was in. She was very surprised to find out their apartment was freshly painted and in fairly good shape. She was in the apartment 2 weeks when her roommate woke up with lots of bites. Once they were sure it was beyond normal Florida bites, she went to the front office. Sounds like there was some "expectation" followed by "need to move fast" as they told her it was bed bugs. Being my DD had her mattress covered, she was not bitten.
Sadly this is now a huge hassle. They had to bag all their belongings and place in living room and be out of the apartment in hours. Pest control came in to fumigate but they forget to tell the kids they would be locked out until today. So they had no pajamas, no clothes and no offer of lodging for the night. At 11:30 pm my DD returns from work to find out she locked out. She had to go to Walmart for clothes etc and luckily her roommate's parents were in town visiting so they crashed at their hotel room. A strange email was sent to offer some housing at a non-Disney complex with no transportation, which won't work for her roommate. They found out today that they only had a few apartments there and had sent out 250 emails - I'm wondering if that many apartments are affected. They gave them movie tickets and food vouchers. There will be a second less toxic treatment next week. If all clear they are done, if not there are more. I told her to demand a hotel room if they find they need to treat again.
They went to office today to ask to be moved to another complex. They were told that them and their stuff are considered quarantined until the apartment checks out clean. They can't afford to let them move their stuff and maybe spread the problem. I agree with that and explained to her that at least the apartment will be bug free, she could move into another and face the same problem. They said normally they would try to move them after an all clear but there are no full bedrooms open, they'd have to split them up. They said there are way more DCP this semester than normal.
She asked if she could throw away all her sheets, pillow and comforter (they were all old from our linen closet) and the mattress cover, and I said yes, go to Walmart and replace them. Just the thought of there maybe being one bug in them makes her itch. She's not sure the washers there will have hot enough water to get them totally clean. She has all her extras, pillow pets etc in bags and we are shipping her treatment strips we ordered to put in the bags to make sure they are bug free.
I am SO glad she took the mattress cover. I highly suggest not just for health reasons but bug reasons that you pack one in your bag. Most stores only carry a couple at a time so it could be hard to find once there as so many DCP are cleaning out the linen shelves at the stores on arrival.
