Unfortunately, the scope of destruction of a catastrophic hurricane was well known and well documented. Somebody posted a link earlier today to an article in Scientific America written in 2001 that eerily forecasts EXACTLY what happened to NO. Right down to the city being 80% under water. If you read the article and did not know when it was written, you would think you were reading a recap of what just happened.treesinger said:Going over the facts again, I was wrong on one point. The President did already declare a state of disaster a full day ahead of time. Ahead of local government request. It was also noted how rarely this is done.
Anyway, in Bush's speech, this was how supplies started getting into NO on day one rather than starting on day three which is normally what happens. Was it enough? No. Because no one could have foreseen the absolute destruction that was coming. Damage, yes. Out and out destruction? No. Thank God at least some supplies were getting there on day one or things would be much much worse.

I was not personally attacking you, just think there is a better time to be bashing our president than right now.
Sorry you took it that way.

Many other organizations, such as the civil corps of engineers have documented what would happen if the levees gave way.
So, the gov't cannot hide behind the excuse that "nobody could have known it would be this bad." It simply is not true. It was well documented that it would be this bad.

I care about my country and will continue to voice my opinion about my elected representatives, especially this President whom I believe is bad for America. It is my right..But I don't think I'll do it on DIS boards too much...it taints the 'MAGIC' for me to be reminded of how divided this country really is and to hear the lack of compassion coming through....Maybe once those poor people have water and food I'll get my sense of humor back...

dvcgirl said:In all honesty, this is ridiculous. It accomplishes nothing, but if you really want to get into it...look to the local and state goverment.
The local and state government needs to be removed or replaced ....and now. The Governor of LA is positively lost. She is not the person for this job. The mayor, he is just a nightmare.
The local government should have been prepared to respond immediately. And they weren't. The Governor has the ability to call up the National Guard. She could have had thousands of troops in place....she didn't.
You all want to blame the president for everything. The Federal goverment is saving thousands of people. The state of Louisiana and the Mayor of NO are saving....none. The mayor is actually making things worse, much worse. He's making it very clear that he's not in control of anything.
While I understand that some of the footage today is incredibly upsetting, we have to keep this thing in perspective. This is a catastrophe that is unprecedented in our nation. We have two disasters that have happened simultaneously. A horrific blow to the gulf coast, and a city that is literally underwater. This is off the scale....occurring over hundreds of square miles.
On top of all of that you have a small number of thugs who have taken to the streets to loot (not food...serious looting) and have taken to shooting police officers and rescue helicopters. News organizations have hired armed protection for their reporters. That's how scary the situation is. The local government knew the situation was getting out of control and they did *nothing*.
Local authorites told the overflow people to go to that convention center...there wasn't one NO police officer there. Not one. How can that be? The Mayor is sending out SOS distress calls when he should be sending in his resignation. "Dear People of New Orleans, I'm not the guy for this job."
I believe that the Feds didn't even know about the situation over at the convention center until that footage was aired today. And tonight, the situation is already improving. Army helicopters have been in dropping off food and water....probably fearing for their own lives in the process.
I just think that knocking the president and the federal government is being short-sighted and reactionary instead of really and truly looking at the situation with a clear (and bipartisan) head....[/QUOTE]
The senate voted for the aid last night (Thursday), the congress will not vote on it until 1 p.m. today (Friday)! At least that's what I heard on the news last night. I think they need to get to it a little sooner than that. But they were all on vacation too and I only can assume it takes some time for all of them to get back to D.C.Nancy said:they just voted tonight (Thursday evening) 10 billion I believe
LoraJ said:As soon as they can, FEMA, Homeland Security and whomever else from the fed Government need to get together and come up with strategic plans and scenerios if something like this were to happen in Miami or other major cities along the coast. And they need to share those planes with the governors of the states. This should never happen again.
