If a person was not born in the US, they're considered an immigrant by definition. They can become, in time, a citizen, but technically, they'll always be an immigrant.
the only thing I know for sure is that a permanent resident card entitles you to work in the USA. I did not know that until I applied for one. I never really thought about what status I was.
This is kind of like a logic puzzle! An immigrant is a person who leaves their country of origin. If you are born in America you are automatically a citizen. If you have permanent resident status that means that you are not a citizen and therefore must be an immigrant!
The only question I have is what about people born in US territories? I seem to remember they are residents, but not citizens. Does anyone know? They don't really seem to be immigrants.
Ok, I just did a google search. People from Guam and the Virgin Islands are citizens, but they are not allowed to vote in presidential elections. If they are full citizens, why shouldn't they be allowed to vote? I know I am getting off topic. Sorry. I just find this interesting!
