Imitrex..... newly diagnosed with migraines

I took it and I will NEVER take it again! I had crazy side effects with it. It made my limbs heavy and I had a hard time moving, I felt like I was in slow motion, I slurred my words, and I looked like i was dead to the world. PLUS it did nothing for the pain or nausea

I've never taken Imitrex but I have taken Maxalt and Axert (sp?). I have horrible migraines as do both of my sisters. My mom can't figure out why we get them when she never did. We all seem to have different triggers also. One of my sisters gets them right around her monthly cycle so they put her on the BC pill where you don't get your period every month. BC pills were making mine worse so I had to stop taking the pill. Heat does it for me. If I get too hot, I will definitely get a migraine. I've been taking Midrin for a couple of years now and it's been working pretty good. It comes in generic too so it isn't too expensive. My sister's doctor wouldn't prescribe Midrin for her because he told her it was an old medicine with side effects. It makes me drowsy but when I have a migraine, all I feel like doing is sleeping anyway! Hope you find something that works for you.

I took this years ago and it made me feel tingly too. The last time I took it my blood pressure skyrocketed and my dr said never to take again. I now take relpax. However, imitrex was a wonder drug when I could take it.

Same thing happened to me. I have taken Maxalt in the past without the side effects, but was out of it and had Imitrex tablet samples. I had gone all day with a nagging headache, tried to get in contact with DH (ER doc). No answer so I told the girls I was going to take this pill and it might make me feel yucky (as in the past). I took it and did feel really bad, finally got in touch with DH. He said to check my BP and it was 220/115  . HE was on his way home, so he put me in the car and tok me back to "work". I had a CT, IV and pain meds, and now thanks to that episode take two blood pressure medications :( No more Imitrex for me.

I hope that you tried the Imitrex and that you're getting relief. I had migraines for years and never got them diagnosed as such because I didn't often have the light sensitivity/queasiness. I have taken Imitrex in the past and it worked but it left me lightheaded. I take Maxalt now and am very happy with it. Hope you find what works for you!

In my experience, Imitrex only works when properly taken. I have suffered from migraines since I was puberty age and still get them today. Over the years they have increased in how bad they've gotten. I have taken some form of migraine meds since I was 15 years old and have mixed reviews on all of them. While I haven't found anything that will make the pain "go away," I've found many ways to help and many medicines that reduce the pain.

Imitrex is god's gift to migraines when used properly and taken at the onset of a migraine. In my personal experience, it's too late for me to take it once I have a full blown migraine. The only thing that will help me then is sleep (hoping that I can fall asleep). I'm a pharmacy technician currently and I see many of the same side effects in people, but almost everyone agrees they're not nearly as bad as the pain associated with migraines. While yes, imitrex has its side effects (nausea, tightness in the chest, dizzyness, etc), to me it's very worth it...Even if it just gets me to sleep because it does knock me out. If I already feel like h*ll, what's the difference of taking a pill that will hopefully help me going to do to worsen the situation? Haha, well actually, maxalt is a different story...I will only take this if im out of imitrex and absolutely dying. I cannot handle how tight it makes my throat, I did actually almost go to the hospital because of this one, but that was only one extreme case.

Also, there's other preventative measures I take such as working out everyday (not just every once in a while because that actually can cause migraines), avoiding caffeine (unless I have a migraine in which I go to starbucks and order a black eye, haha), drinking lots of water to stay hydrated, keeping up on sleep. It's hard to do these things, especially since I'm in college, but they're a lot better then dealing with migraines that will force me to not only miss out on class, but on parts of my life. There's no way these things are ruling me!

Good luck dealing with migraines OP. They suck, but with the right care and prevention, hopefully you can avoid getting a lot of them!

Sorry to hear that you had such dibilitating side effects with Imitrex but...........Don't give up! I, too, didn't do well with Imitrex (very similar reactions to yours) and was very reluctant to take any other pills. I figured I'd stick with my exederin - even though it really wasn't very effective and made me very sick to my stomach. Finally, my DH convinced me to give the doctor one more try with a different medication. He prescribed Maxalt and it has changed my life. No bad side effects at all and no more being house-bound and incapactiated by migraines! It's like a miracle drug for me. Now, I'm not saying that Maxalt is right for you...........only that you shouldn't be afraid to try an alternative prescription treatment. Thank goodness my DH insisted that I keep trying to find something that worked.

DId you take it? How are you?

I did take it and it did help. I wish I would have had it 2 weeks ago when I had just about the worst headache of my life.

I didn't notice any tingling or flush feeling. No side effects what so ever for me.

Just came from the doctor and he prescribed Imitrex. I'm almost scared to take it. Can anyone share their experiences with me? I actually feel a headache coming now- but I have lived with them for so long I just don't know if I need to take this.

Imitrex is a migraine escape medicine. It is designed to be taken when you first get symptoms of the migraine (dull aching, vision changes). I took it for awhile but it never worked for me because my headaches came on too suddenly to "escape" from. I never experienced any side effects from the medications. Why live with them if you don't have to?

SO happy for you. Migraines are debilitating.
