...we live in Bergen county...pretty much EVERYONE in Bergen, Hudson, Passaic and I'm guessing Essex counties refer to New York state as upstate...

...really....I'm surprised. I grew up in Cliffside Park, which is right near North Bergen, in Hudson county. My sister and I knew a bunch of people from North Bergen and they all referred to NY state as 'upstate' too.....interesting.

....maybe more so, Bergen county residents, because Bergen county borders the southern NY State border....?

I have thought about it, and definitely heard “ upstate New York” when we would be traveling to out relatives in Amsterdam NY. Upstate was always followed by NY.
