I'm still scared to fly...

I flew just a couple of weeks before 09/11, and I have flown once since then. Are some of you completely comfortable with flying again? Or are we all still just a little nervous? I will do it...but not without my stomach churning. And I'm not normally the kind of person to worry or to think about "what ifs." I wish I could hop on a plane and not worry but I'm afraid I'll never be able to do that again.

I was just reading a hotel review. Staying at the same hotel as the reviewer was a convention of police dogs. Said he never felt safer in his life.

Personally, that's exactly how I feel when flying. There is no place on earth that is as examined and screen as an airport and airplane. (Well, except maybe a hotel full of police and their dogs).

There are lots of things I'm afraid of. A terrorist attack on an airplane isn't one of them.

What makes you uncomfortable? I fly quite a bit and I have in the back of my head what happened but that doesn't stop me from flying.

I am a single mother and even my kids urged me to keep flying after 9/11.

I volunteer on a Fear of Flying online site. Everything there is FREE (unlike other FOF sites out there that want to sell you hyped up "cures" for hundreds of dollars) and there are several commercial airline pilots, medical personnel, a psychologist, tons of business travelers and other recovering fearful flyers. Stop by and ask your questions there - fun group and there are several of us DISers there as well!

I am a recovering fearful flyer as well. After a really bad flight I grounded myself and refused to fly for over a dozen years. With the help of the people on that site I got back in the air and now fly between 50,000 and 100,000 miles EACH year!

If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Nope - not nervious at all about flying. Statistically, its safer than driving.

I have heard that. I have never flown and doing so in June. I am scared too but it should be ok!

Mike

I'm only scared of the plane being hijacked or blown up by terrorists. I never worried before 09/11 at all. I just don't to be on a plane when they try it again! But I am able to tell myself it'll be okay and do it anyway. I just feel uneasy about it! I guess there's nothing we can do but believe that the airlines are doing everything they can to make sure we're safe!

Every year in the USA, about 50,000 people die in car accidents.

50,000!!!

How many died in the worst year of air travel accidents? Maybe a few hundred? TOPS?

I'm not scared of flying. I'm scared of driving to and from the airport.

Something like 9/11 happening again are extremely remote (I never say never). Why? Security measures in place currently, while not perfect, would thwart weapons (even the box cutters) getting through. Even if they had accomplices (cleaning crew, maintenance workers) leaving the weapons in seat back pockets, cabin crew doors are locked. Besides, after 9/11, no passenger group would ever allow it again (a la Flight 93). And another thing, the flights on 9/11 were almost empty. Flights these days are packed, increasing the passenger to potential terrorist ratio, and making a successful hijacking even more remote.

That leaves cargo. And while it is an area where we are lacking when it comes to security, they wouldn't waste their time (they being the sob's who pulled off 9/11). As they have proven with 9/11, the earlier attempt to bomb the WTC, last August's plot, and the London subway bombings, they want to go for maximum impact and death toll. Meaning they would want to time the bombs to go off over big cities. They could get the packages on planes, but trying to get specific packages on specific planes flying specific routes to get that maximum impact would require a coordination that would be rather difficult (IMHO) to pull off, and highly likely to be detected.

I fly twice a month. I am not worried. I have faith in the American aviation industry.

I flew a month after 9/11 or close to it to Super Soap Weekend in FL. I have to say I fly so much better now for some reason. I feel more safe now when flying.

I just got back from WDW and I have to say they are so thourgh at security. I was amazed as I fly out of a small airport and while they do their job- it is phenomonal at the airport in Orlando- Dont worry.

I am not going to say that there is nothing to worry about. I don't think I would dwell on 9/11 too much. When I fly do I think about what happened, yes. I still get on the plane and enjoy the flight. Just focus on your vacation to WDW. Security is good in my opinion.

Don't worry. It's been over 5 years since 9/11, and in that time not a single hijacking has occured anywhere in the United States.

It's safer to fly now than ever in the history of commercial aviation.

If you have a little uneasiness, that's okay. Reassure yourself, stay calm, and get on the plane.

But if you have an unreasonable, irrational, or crippling fear, that's different - you might be suffering from a phobia. Phobias, thankfully, can be treated; seek out some professional help, and you can rid yourself of a phobia and get on with your life.

As horrible as 9/11 was in every way possible, in terms of deaths from the 4 airplane crashes, it was somewhere around 200. On average, 137 people die EACH day in car accidents. Our most horrible single day in terms of airliner crashes (100% due to terrorism) was only slightly higher than a NORMAL day on the highways.

When people say flying is safer than driving, it's not a cliche.

Another way to look at it is in terms of patriotism. Terrorists don't really aim to kill, their aim is to use that killing as a means of causing TERROR. If we change our lifestyles out fo fear, then they've won part of their battle.

the way I look at it . You have a higher chance of getting in a car wreck going to disney ,then you do with a plane crashing .
