I'm starting to get why people are saying they don't want to come back.

Youre good at math. That was correct & I tipped 20% because the server was nice, but I won't go again. I'm not a cheapskate, but I do understand value. I think ppl underestimate prices at Disney because prices do not include things like tips & tax, which over a whole trip can add up.

Do people usually tip 20% at a buffet?? I've never eaten at Boma, but I'm pretty sure it's a buffet and under no circumstances am I paying someone $10 to refill my water and remove some plates. $5 max, and I'm usually a good tipper, but not for a buffet when I continually get my own food. I mean, they don't even take your food order or bring it for you.

Am I missing something?

At a 20 buffet at home I would not tip this much, but Amy was amazing. She knew the speciality drinks by heart, went through each buffet station with me explaining what's offered & I never had a dirty plate remain on my table more than a minute or two. She was also fast at bringing me my drinks & taking my payment. She was so good, I remember her name. Plus - this wasn't a 20 buffet at home - this was a 60+ dollar meal, so I tipped appropriately & from what I could gather that was the way everyone else was treating the situation.

Youre paying for the experience as well. I thought it was good - just won't be doing it again. Some ppl act like it's a must do & it really is skippable in my mind.

Oh ya 1000% agree, we always have taken food home from dinner for a midnight snack or morning snack.

I would have done that if I hadn't gone to MK for a few hours after dinner. I thought the food might spoil. But it's a good plan.

Ive been at Epcot for two hours & have ridden 1 ride - in line for Maelstrom. Then I'm eating & driving home.

I've decided to wait at least a decade before returning.

Sorry to hear you are having a bad time, just wondering if the one ride is on top of your 3 FP+ rides or if you've only done one ride. 4 rides in 2 hours doesn't sound bad.

I only wanted to ride maelstrom & test track before driving home. FP+ wasn't available for either during the time frame I needed. 2.5 hours to ride both. It was mostly due to having to wait in the standby lines. But for just wanting to do 2 rides - it was a bad choice. I should have skipped Epcot and gone home. It was very crowded & hot & not worth the hassle. Got their at 1130, which is not rope drop, but I had other things to do & couldn't get there any earlier.

I hear ya. Buffets aren't my thing. I stayed at AKL last year and did every dining experience possible, except Boma. There's no animal viewing, limited specialty food, huge price tag and I don't like buffets anyway. But some people love that place... :-)

I think it's pretty standard. We never eat at buffets at home (in MI too!) but I would probably tip 20% at any buffet as long as the service is good. They may not take your order/bring plates, but they tend to have more plates/bowls to clear, which is yuckier work that dropping off. I really see little difference between the two unless you're talking V&A or something (I assume, never been there). They interact, bring drinks, make sure you're taken care of, clear table, process your check/payment, etc. :confused3

We rarely get to a theme park before 11-ish in the morning (goal is to be leaving the hotel room by 10) and always get to ride whatever we want, with one exception: TSMM. TSMM FP-s were never available that late in the day. Otherwise, we'd usually be able to ride everything we wanted, even TT and Soarin', although the FP-s might have been later in the afternoon or evening. No problem, as we were the people closing the park every night. It's the way we prefer to tour, and as I said, we were always able to ride everything, sometimes multiple times, with the aid of FP-. I am apprehensive about our next trip, as I know FP+ will effect the way we tour; it seems almost everything has longer standby lines than ever before, but none of us is willing to do rope drop every day of the only week's vacation we get all year long. OP, hearing about your experience at Epcot is only adding to my apprehensions, but we will have 3 FP+ at Epcot (if I can figure out what we want to use them for). We usually travel to WDW in August, over Columbus Day weekend, or during the first week or two of March (college spring break).

Boma is breaking my heart right now, as it's our favorite but it's getting hard to justify the price. DD wants to try Jiko for her b-day dinner, so we probably won't go to Boma this time around. At $40 per person, plus tip, it's hard to justify the money for a buffet, regardless of how much we love it, plus it seems like a lot of African food for a 5 night trip. Just for the record, I tip 15% at sit-down restaurants, 10% at buffets, regardless of where I am. I will tip more or less, depending on the quality of the service.

Regarding your resort, we really enjoyed CSR, but to each her own opinion. We usually eat b'fast in the room as we are coffee/fruit/yogurt/cereal folks and then meals in the parks (both QS and TS) so distance to the "center" of the resort wasn't an issue for us. I can see how that could be annoying, though; one of the things I hate about POP is the long haul to the food court all the time (or at least, before they had fridges in the rooms!). We are staying at BWV (rented DVC points) in a studio on our next trip. We'll see. I hope the proximity to Epcot and DHS is worth the price, but I got a good price on it, and spent more on a suite, per night, in Manhattan last weekend. I am expecting the BWV studio to be smaller than I would like, so am trying to temper my expectations with what I am pretty sure is reality.

Colleges- most of the schools around here are having finals this week, with graduation on Mother's Day weekend. I also know of several colleges that aren't out until the end of May. Public school in the state won't be out until sometime during the 3rd week of June, if not late, and same with most of Massachusetts. ("Data" collected from myself/friends who teach public school in ME, my brother who teaches in MA, DD and DH who are students/faculty at different universities.) I do not think that college ending has the same effect on attendance in May as it does in early March, when virtually every college I have ever heard of has a week or two off, and in the northeast, all are desperate for sunshine and warm, so they head for Disney. Once public school is out, DIsney will have packed parks!

I think we all judge "value" differently, but with the price hikes and what I perceive as limitations on fastpasses, I, too, question the value of WDW to our family. I KNOW we'll have a great time on our next visit, but I, too, and wondering if it'll be the last trip for awhile.

The ones around by me are done too
And all the ones I know let out either this week or next. I think we've pretty much established that while there are many schools out now, there are also still many in session. :confused3

I don't think that colleges letting out has near the effect on attendance that K-12 schools letting out has.

I'm sorry you didn't have a great time, OP. :( I didn't love Boma as much on my last visit, either.

I'd love to take a solo trip like you did, though! One day. I hope your next trip-- whenever you're ready for it-- is awesome!!

I didn't say it did our didn't have an effect. The person who originally said colleges by her were out then had 2 more people comment that the ones by them weren't. I was acknowledging that some others were out too.

Odd I just took a quick weekend trip and had the complete opposite experience as far as crowds, FP+ etc. Hopefully you enjoy your trip next time. Ironically this was the first moderate we ever stayed in (POR), never again. The Grand and Contemporary are defiantly our home, staying at POR just this quick weekend just reaffirmed why we love the Grand so much.

As for prices it's Disney. My father in law ALWAYS complains about the prices of rooms/food/drinks and I have to remind him we are not on at home eating P.F. Changs its WDW, just like how airport lounges or sporting events charge way way too much for a beer. So does Disney for their product because the real world rules of supply and demand do not apply. If you go in expecting to spend $150+ for a nice TS meal and the themeing, service, and food is good I am happy about the price because I know I am I'm Disney. Just how when I go to NYC I know the Ritz at central is going to be $700 a night where are the one in Atlanta is $250 I know the price so I don't feel shocked or cheated. I guess what I'm saying is it's Disney, it's not cheap, you can accept that or not return :-/

I don't think it's any secret that the TS quality isn't really great relative to the cost. We've been a few times now and Ragland Road is really the only one we enjoy but that is more because of the atmosphere and the fact that it forces us to visit Downtown Disney. Coral Reef is ok as well I guess. Be Our Guest has a neat atmosphere but one I'd much rather enjoy during lunch. On the buffets, we just don't get our money's worth at all. I'd love to do a breakfast buffet at Tusker House but know that I wouldn't eat nearly enough to make it worth it. We had the same problem at O'Hana last year. Loved the atmosphere, thought the food was pretty good, but realized we just didn't eat near enough of it!

As for the rides part... well, Epcot isn't exactly ride friendly, especially if you arrive at noon. I'm sure you could have gotten in at Captain EO relatively quickly. ;)

I don't know. I guess the point is you could hire a person with limited English for minimum wage to clear my plates. When I am going to tip someone, usually 25%, it is because they got everyone's order correct, made sure the food was correct before serving us, brought drinks/bread to the table in a timely manner and were otherwise pleasant and available. At a buffet, the server only needs to do one of those things: drinks. As pleasant as they may be, they aren't really doing much for me. I'm not paying someone 20% so that I can make my own food, etc...

Of course, it is well within everyone's discretion to tip what they want. If you do decide to tip 20%, though, you probably can't complain about the total bill in the end.

It reminds me of we go out to dinner at home. Two people, $80 bill.
Me: "Wow, that food was really expensive! Look at the bill."
DW: "No, you had six drinks, which cost us $40!"
Me: "Ohhhhh......"

I think it's regional. I have 2 sons in college. One gets out early next week. The other gets out late next week. When I was in college, I never got out until early to mid-June.

And I agree. I don't think it's nearly the big deal it is when k-12 lets out.

I feel that WDW is one of the FEW places where I really get my $ worth. When we go to the mountains, we spend more, plus we have to do all our own driving and prices of meals are unpredictable because we aren't on any dining plan. So for us, WDW is definitely a feel good all the way around. As far as crowds - no, I'm not crazy about it either, but it's just part of it and I still have a great time.
We always do QS. I usually pay out of pocket one TS meal during the trip, just for the dining experience.
As a die-hard WDWer I have to say that, IMO, the frustrations some people have is because they don't "get" what the over-all experience is about.
For the OP, I really am sorry that you didn't have such a great time. Maybe after a decade you will be excited to go back and will enjoy you time there.
