DD (10) has been taking Ice Skating lessons for about 4 1/2 months now. On Christmas Eve, the Skating School had a holiday show. DD has been working hard on her lessons, a practicing at least twice a week. However, her teacher has been absent a lot, and her consistancy in lessons has been low, to say the least.
She decided she wanted a new coach, and we agreed with her decision. Turns out, he was available to take her on last weekend - 3 days before the show. She practiced for 3 hours on Saturday on her own. He asked if she could come to another rink where he also teaches on Sunday.
Well, she went Sunday. He did a lot of 'unteaching' and 'reteaching' . He changed her program. This amazing little 10 YO yorked for 3 hours on Sunday, then asked to go back to him for another 3 hours of torture on Monday! She work really hard, and was a little nervous about doing a new program. And she has never been alone in front of an audience before (believe me, that's a big rink for a little girl). It wasn't like dance or band where she was with a group -200 pairs of eyes on her.
Tuesday, she got up in front of 200 people, did her program. I was blown away. I have never been so proud of her - her discipline, courage (don't get ME up in front of 200 people, neverthe less on ice skates). She skated to a Michael Crawford version of "Reflection". She did great (she nailed her spiral and her toe spin) but I was most proud by the sheer amount of work and dedication she put in.
She wants to compete, and is starting on a 2 or 3 days a week (money permitting) schedule with her new coach.
Sarah Hughes?- I'm not sure. But I could not have been more proud if it WAS Sarah Hughes out there. It was, without a doubt, the best gift I got this season!
Way to go, baby!
