Im so over this Ice Bucket Challenge

Just the fact that people are *****ing about the challenge is proof enough that the Ice Bucket Challenge has raised awareness of the disease.

Would people be talking about the disease today, even if it is *****ing about it because they are "over it", if the challenge had not gone viral?

As for the autoplay videos on Facebook (phone/tablet/laptop) - it is easy enough to disable the autoplay. No reason to suffer and complain about it.

Some people would have nothing to talk about if they did this. ;)

Was anyone "over it" when people started wearing ribbons, and now people wear them all the time in a variety of colors for a variety of different charities? When it started I believe with AIDS did people begrudge that charity?

Was anyone "over it" when Lance Armstrong's Yellow Stay Strong Bands were all the rage, and everyone was wearing them? And now once again bands can be found in all colors and for all causes? Were people begruding the money and awareness that his bands at the time brought to cancer?

It is ALS's turn to have some attention, plain and simple. A simple task has brought awareness, just like the ribbons and bands and the color pink has done before it for different diseases.

Next it will be another cause...and when it is their turn and people can unite and raise money and awareness for that cause too, it will be a good thing!

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Sorry. That line kept going through my head when I read what you wrote. Carry on…...

ALS foundation is reporting record breaking donations in the last month....plus its kind of funny to see your friends/family/celebrities (hello Tim Mcgraw) do it. Mickey Mouse was nominated by an pro athlete, can't remember who but I'm looking forward to Disney's response. Its all in good fun. If you are nominated and don't want to do it, then ignore it. :confused3:thumbsup2

...Its pretty simple, IF you want to donate, then donate. No one is making anyone or forcing anyone. Yes, my 11 year old son and I did the ice bucket. We also donated AS MUCH AS WE COULD. The guide is at least $10 or as much as $100 (or ANY AMOUNT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH). If you have other organizations you prefer, great. I have NO ties to ALS. That didn't stop me. Many of you posted that you shouldn't be forced or "called out" and made you feel bad if you ignored or declined? Really? I challenged several of my friends and many accepted while a couple declined. So what?

...I have friends who have participated. I have friends who have posted on FB that instead of donating to ALS, they are donating to another charity close to their hearts, which is great. And I'm sure I have friends who have chosen not to participate, but I don't know who they are because they probably just decided to ignore it, which is also totally fine.

Frankly, the posts and news stories about the challenge are a welcome respite from the tragedy that goes on in the world. I love to see people having fun, being silly, and, yes, helping their fellow humans.

Extorition..oh please let's use some hyperbole!

I literally just got done watching the story of the man who started it all, Pete Frates. To see how his life and his body has changed moved me to tears, it is so sad what this disease has done.

I am proud that DS11 and I partcipated. And yes he donated himself, he took some birthday money and put it in a bucket at Chick-Fil-A that they had set up for ALS. I donated too. One of the young boys that DS11 challenged donated to Junvenile Diabetes and that was perfectly fine.

This was marketing genius at work. Just like the Pink campaign for Breast Cancer was started by a small group of woman with determination this started out small and no one I am sure thought it would take off like it did. For those that suffer I am glad it did.

And if you are sick of it, then scroll past the videos, change the channel, it is not that hard but why you have to begrudge others from doing it I dont understand.

This has brought people from all walks of life together, families had fun with it, CEOs (Bob Iger), atheletes, musicians, celebrities etc. It is a small thing that everyone can do if they choose or can from a health perspecitive (like DS11 wanted to challenge his godmother, but she is pregnant and said that might not be a good idea, it might have been fine, but I did not know so we stuck with friends).

And for those using the drought excuse or drinking water in Africa excuse, once again hyperbole. Water here is not going to help people in Africa, helping them build irrigation systems will or donating to a cause like that. And as for the drought in CA, once again try and study the water cycle, the water is evaporated right back into the sky. And highly doubt that you have never wasted water in your life, I saw lots of glasses of ice water and things left behind a few weeks ago in San Diego and DL. Go stand on your lawn that you imported from elsewhere and dump the water there. Take some water from your pool, throw in a few cubes of ice, and stand on that top step and dump it there, volia it goes right back where it came from.

Go Ice Bucket Challenge:cool1:

...As for only teens doing this, I have watched for more adults take up the challenge than teens and kids.

Mostly teens are you kidding me...this has people from all walks of life doing it, from CEOs and stars to everyday folks SAHMs to engineers to oncologists to accountants.

And once again no one has to waste water to do this, do it in your pool, use the water that you are going to water your lawn with during the times allowed, do it in your bathtub and use that water to bathe etc. There are ways if you want to do the challenge that are still environmentally friendly. Heck Martha Stewart did hers at the hair salon before she got her hair done, wet her hair and done.

I agree totally.

The wonderful thing is that other charities are also benefiting, such as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation your young friend donated to.

...And you are right, it is marketing genius. I have always found that many naysayers in anything are really just jealous that they (or their organization) did not think of the idea they are complaining about. Well, as mentioned, other diseases are benefiting by proxy. Many people are accepting the challenge and donating to their charity of choice.

I mentioned before that right before I read this thread I had watched on ESPN the story of Pete Frates, the young man who started all this. DS16 was watching it with me and he never got up from the table, just kept watching, even though I was worried about him being alte for his first day of cross country practice. I think he wanted to watch. I heard him gasp when Pete declared he wanted to walk down the aisle at his wedding after they were announced. He did it with the help of his bride and best man. I had tear streaming down my face. At the end he turned to me and said he had no idea, and was amazed how much Pete's body and detoriated from the age of 27 when he was diagnosised to age 29 now. My teenage son now has more awareness of ONE of the horrible diseases that affects people now. All because of Pete Frate and his ice bucket challenge.

And there are vidoes out there for evey charity under the sun, they dont usually bring in the funds unless there is a catch, something that draws you in, like puppies and kittens for the SPCA etc. This ice bucket challenge has been the catch that helped ALS. It got people from all walks of life, when sometimes are country seems so divided, to take a step back, do something silly TOGETHER, I never thought I would be doing something with Oprah, Steven Speilberg and Ethel Kennedy:rotfl2:. We can help a worthy cause and bond as humans...win/win in my book:)

Most people I've seen are doing the ice challenge AND donating. You know, if you want to participate then do it, if you don't, then don't participate.

Just another 'ketchy' way to bring awareness to a great cause! Why 'run' for causes? Same type of thing!

Agree, agree, agree, agree with all of the above posts!:thumbsup2

I love seeing people I know (and many, many more people I don't know) having fun with this challenge, and I love seeing all the donations that are being made for a great cause. It's also awesome to see businesses participating, which spurs on other businesses to participate. I also understand if someone doesn't want to participate or someone donates without all the fanfare. To each his own.

My husband and I have been challenged by several friends and family members and have had a lot of fun doing the ice bucket dump, and watching the videos of others. We did change it up a bit and in addition to donating to ALS, we also chose to donate to another organization, and our challenge to others was for them to donate to the charity of their choice. Hemophilia affects several members of my family (several cousins have hemophilia, my dad was a hemophiliac and one of our grandsons has mild hemophilia) so we donated to a cause that is especially important to us. We have a friend who accepted the challenge and donated to Parkinson's Disease in honor of her father.

And as far as water conservation, we dumped buckets of ice and water from our pool while standing in the pool.:) And even that caused some controversy. We were called out by several people for cheating. They said who WOULDN'T want to stand in a pool and dump ice water on their head in 107 degree temps in Arizona.:thumbsup2:rotfl2:

That's great that you've gotten so much rain. California has been in a drought for several years. There are fines for watering your lawn outside of set hours, washing the driveway, and a number of other water wasters.

You may think it doesn't affect you, but California produces a significantly large amount of produce (over 90% of a wide variety of green veg are from CA), not to mention nuts and rice, for the rest of the country.

I'm not saying ending the ice bucket challenge will reverse the water problem, but it's like hurting one cause to help another imo. And as another poster pointed out, it is mostly teens doing this, and many are just thinking of the fun, not the cause. What lesson are they learning about conservation from this?

so do the ice bucket challenge on your lawn during "watering hours".

In the last week we've gotten over 5" of rain... if I could I'd ship it all your way.

which is the best ice bucket challenge everyone has seen so far? John Barrowman has been the best I've seen so far... it went so wrong. :rotfl2:

I dont want to link the video itself since his husband is in a little tiny bathing suit... but here is his facebook page.

The actor, Chris Pratt, does the ice bucket challenge from a different perspective. Pretty funny! And there is a guy (don't remember who he is or where he's from) but he did a hilarious ice bucket dump. One of his nominees was Napolean Dynamite. The guy proceeds to dance all over his yard to the Pedro number, then dumps the ice at the end.:lmao:

I agree. I enjoy watching some of the videos, AND I think it's great that a record number of donations are coming in. I'm sure that if people were just posting on their Facebook status "I challenge X, Y, and Z to donate to ALS," the outcome would not be the same. The gimmick that keeps everyone talking is the ice bucket challenge.

really? You apparently, were over history class too soon. :rotfl2:

The fines for washing car, watering lawn etc are real though. $500 fines. There are no fines for the ice bucket challenge.

Nor should there be. The amount of water used in an ice bucket challenge is almost nothing compared to what it takes to wash a car, water a lawn, or take a shower.

But if it bothers you, then I agree with others, don't participate.

I will admit, at first I didn't know there was a correlation between the ice bucket videos and donating to ALS, so I thought the whole thing was kind of pointless. Then it wasn't clear that people who accept the challenge are supposed to donate a smaller amount and pass on the challenge for a few days after that. After learning more information about how the whole thing is supposed to work and that it raised soooooooooo much money for ALS, I think it's great. I was also saddened to learn how common ALS is and that so many people have loved ones in their lives who suffer/suffered from this terrible terrible disease.

I can not tell you how much I LOVE a random Animal House quote!! Well played!!!

My favorite so far is Nathan Fillion. He was wearing white when he got dumped with ice and water.

One of the best lines from one of the best movies EVER!

I applaud whenever anyone can fit a random Animal House quote into a thread!:worship:

I have not seen any of this ice bucket stuff on Facebook or in the media at all, so I was not aware of it. Yesterday we were at a party and one of my DD's friends came up to us freaking out because she'd just been challenged by a friend to do it, and showed us the video of the friend dumping the ice water on her own head. I thought it was just some nonsense that the kids were doing and I laughed. I'm not sure that the kids around here even know why it's being done - I'll have to ask.

I don't get why some people don't like being fun & silly & act so derisive of other people having fun & being silly.

I love fun! (The band's not so bad either...)

And, if you can have fun & be silly for a good cause, even better!

Anyway, neither DH nor I have been challenged yet. But our older DS was challenged yesterday, so I feel sure our turn is coming.

My grandfather passed away from ALS in January 2000, & we donate to an ALS foundation monthly.

Over the weekend I read that ALS has received 11 Million dollars because of this challenge. The Boston College Alumni started it to honor a former Baseball player for the school who is now in a wheelchair because of the disease. We in NY might have increased awareness, since Lou Gehrig had the disease, and many people formerly called ALS "Lou Gehrig Disease".

If you are not interested in this particular disease, please don't knock the people trying to help others. Just do what you want to do, or ignore it.
