I think is great that so many people can come together to donate for a cause. However why are dumping ice water over our heads?? :confused3
I just don't get it

I am torn about my feelings about the ice bucket challenge. I lost my mom to ALS so it is a cause close to my heart. I glad that the awareness is now so out there and that people are donating. I don't get what the ice bucket has to do with it. Also in some of the videos I have seen it says that the person needs to do the ice thing and if not they need to donate. I rather they just donate so that more research can be done for this terrible disease. Still, the more the word gets out the better.

I'd be happy to donate. I would not be happy about having ice thrown on me.

I have heard a couple different numbers but either way they have raised millions- MILLIONS in less than a month!

Yay, ice bucket challenge!

For all those that have lost friends and love ones to ALS- this is great to hear that the funds are coming with the awareness! And just maybe the millions of teens posting this summer are getting a little more than cold water splashed on them. :)

they said that the ice water on a person replicates similar symptoms of a person with ALS...

I had wondered if it had to do with something like that even though I don't think one could compare the symptoms to dumping a bucket of ice on your head.

Still as I said before, it is raising awareness and money for research which is a good thing.. :)

The point is, you donate or get iced. Most, if not all, celebrities are doing both. I have friends who just paid. I haven't been challenged but I'm sending money. The icing is a stunt to get attention. It's blatant and meant to be.

I have read that if you don't get iced you donate $100 but if you do the donation is $10.

This is how it was presented to me as well.

Personally, the gimmick is, well, a gimmick. Not my thing, but I know it gets attention, so whatever. BUT the "challenge" or "calling out" part really bothers me.

I don'T like any sort of chain letter or take off thereof--things like "most people will not repost this, but if you care about XYZ you will" and certainly not things that publicly name people and put them in the position of "having to" donate to your particular cause or else risk looking like cold hearted jerks. The charity has made a lot of money by setting things up this way, but I think it is a bad way to go about it and will not be a part. I'll send my money to charities I care about, that also get high ratings for spending on programs and not admin (which, I admit this one does) and do NOT coerce people into donations, or encourage others to do that for them.

Go ahead and call me a killjoy; I don't mind :lmao:

This is my first post on DISboards although I have learned so much from the wonderful people on this site over the years. I find this thread very timely in light of the long overdue increase in ALS awareness. My 38 yr old daughter has been fighting this disease for over a year, and it has turned our world upside down. Yet she continues to be the best wife, mother to her 2yr old and 5 yr old sons, daughter, sister and member of her community that she possibly can be. This ugly disease has taken her Arms, Legs, and Speech, but she is determined to create memories for her boys. We have been a Disney family for over 30 yrs and are hoping to visit as a family again in November. I want you all to know that this ice bucket challenge..as 'silly' as it may seem, ..has put a bit more hope in her eyes !!!

And yes, you can be sure that I will appreciate any advice that I find here that will help us with a very different WDW vacation !!

I have a big problem with this extortion, yes it is not a challenge it is extortion.
I have certain charities that I donate to, ones that have touched MY family and ALS is not one of them and I am not donating to them so if someone deosn't donate they get iced, it is not a challenge.

So drought is over, food prices are down, and we no longer need to conserve water and can afford to just throw it around like it's no thing?

I think that ALS is a great cause. I'm willing to have a bucket of ice water dumped on me and I'm willing to donate money to charity. But I think the ice bucket challenge is obnoxious.

I don't document my every move or announce my charitable efforts to my friends, family members, and former Kindergarten classmates on FB. Also, I'll decide the charities that I'm giving to and the amount that I'm giving freely, not based on a dare or peer pressure.

Couldn't agree more! And if someone challenges me I will just ignore it. So many of my friends and family are doing it.

Around here, it's all about the young teens--both my 11 and 14 year old have done it this summer.

But it's not the first challenge of its type this summer-- in mid June they both did one where you have to jump into a still-pretty-cold swimming pool.

And, from their perspective, it's absolutely not about ALS awareness or anything else-- any donation they might have made would have come from me, not them, anyway. At 11 and 14 they don't have the means to make a donation to anyone.

I was never into it so there isn't anything to get over. If someone wants to give to charity than just give. Don't bully others into doing the same. We all have causes near to dear to our hearts. I don't go around trying to make others feel guilty for not giving to my causes, please grant me the same consideration.

There are many terminal diseases much less known and funded than als. Will they be championed as well?

guess it depends on what part of the country you're from because there is no lack of water in my area! We've gotten more than our fair share of rain this summer.
