I have just been into town for my weekly weigh in (I weigh Saturday's although we post Monday) and I have gained two pounds although I have been good this week. So overall for the two weeks since I started I am up one pound. What's worse is that for the last six months I have been saying that I will start to lose weight and have done nothing about it and I stayed the same! I almost feel like giving up.......

Sue

I know that feeling so well, you try really hard and your body just doesn't cooperate.

What plan are you using? I know on weight watchers I could lose if I varied my points, doing a few days of minimum, then one day of max, then back to min. I am doing Atkins now, and I must stay at 20 or fewer carbs to lose anything. I am very resistant, so I have to be happy with losing only 15 pound over 8 weeks. Actually, I am thrilled with that!

Please, don't give up. Rethink what you are doing, maybe get walk in a few times a week. Maybe it was the bloat fairy, maybe it was exercize making you more toned and muscles weigh more. Maybe you had too much water before you weighed. Just don't give up. You are going to get healthier!!!! We are all here for you.

Sue, I am sorry to inform you that it is against the WISH bylaws, Section IV, Article III paragraph II, for you to give up. Honest!

"No WISHer may give up, period, end of case, tough cookies."

(The "tough cookies" part was my idea, I kind of like it :) I think it adds a certain "je ne sais quoie", don't you? )

Okay, calm down. You are not following a structured eating plan, you are "eating sensibly". Sometimes, we aren't eating as sensibly as we think we are and we can get frustratred.

So!! Here is what I think you should do. I think you should find an eating plan with a little more structure that works well for you.

Eliminating all refined carbohydrates has worked very well for me. We have many WISHers who have had great success with Weight Watchers. Others have succeeded well with the Slimfast plan. Do a little bit of reading up online and choose an eating plan that is right for you.

If you don't like the word "diet" then find a "nutritional program" that you think you can live with and see if that doesn't give you a little more control and success. Sometimes semantics can be so useful :teeth:

The thing is that I know you can do this. You are motivated to do this or you wouldn't be here on WISH with us right now. You just need to add a little more structure to your nutritional direction ;)

Don't give up. I would miss you too much if you gave up. Besides that, if you are honest with yourself, you know that you can do this, right? You are an intelligent and competent person and you can do this.

What do you say? Promise you won't give up?

Katholyn

Please, please DO NOT GIVE UP!!

I also know that feeling SO WELL. That has happened to me a lot the last several months, where I've been really good with my eating plan and only maintained or even gained. I KNOW how frustrating it can be! But, DO NOT GIVE UP! Eventually, your body will realize what you are trying to do and start cooperating! I (finally) have had a loss each week for the last 4 weeks now, and even though not large losses, I am thrilled! I have a feeling I will be up this week after breaking my rib and not being able to do anything. I am putting off going to my weigh-in today as long as I possibly can! But, I WILL show up right before they close!

Stick with it. You know you are doing what is best for your health and you WILL be rewarded!! {{{HUGS}}}

Never ever ever ever give up, that's what I tell my children and that's what I do. If I don't loose one day , tomorrow is a new day.
Please don't give up, hard work always pays off.

Don't give up!! If you give up, the weight wins!! Tomorrow is another day and you will be fine! You can do this and we are all here to help you through it!!!

Hugs

I've been where you are many times for the past 6 weeks! If I could get through it and continue trying- SO CAN YOU!!! I am the weakest person around when it comes to diet, but there is something magical about this WISH board. People here can help you get through this and help you to continue successfully. You have made the first step- you don't really want to give up do you? You came here and posted about your frustration! You didn't just melt away into the back ground never to be heard from again! (OF course, we would never let that happen if you tried!) NO!! You came here and expressed your frustration! GOOD FOR YOU!!

EVERYONE has these days. They ususally fall around a weigh in day- no surprise there! Kath taught me one thing... that was to look at the overall picture. Do you feel better about yourself now that you've gone for some time and controlled what you were eating? Are there other positive things, weight aside, that have happened as a result of you watching your food intake? For me I've had changes in my medical conditions. Not much weight loss after 6 weeks, but meds cut way down! So, try to pull something positive out of this experience.

You have obviously made many new friends and supporters here. We will help you all we can, but please...... don't you give up on yourself! YOU CAN DO THIS !!! Just keep posting until you feel better- it works.. I promise!

You're all right - I won't let this beat me, I can do it. It was just such a shock expecting a loss and getting a gain. I think it probably is a combination of me not being as good as I thought I had (I'm going to go back to writing everything down), TOM and my body rebelling at the new regime!! But thanks for all your comments it has helped me get it back in perspective, I will do it, I must do it.:D
Sue

You CAN do it!!!!

Are you following WW? I know when I began it took a few weeks for my body to realize what was happening and go into "weight loss" mode. Even if you are doing WW or just a sensible plan on your own, Kath is right, cut back on white flour and sugars and try to get your carbs from fruit, veggies and high fiber cereals. They will keep you feeling fuller longer and they are great for getting rid of that EVIL Bloat Fairy!!!!

Pay attention to portion sizes, even if it means investing a few dollars in a small kitchen scale. When we guesstimate, we usually guess larger than what is real!

Also remember to drink water!! It really does aid in weight loss!

Good luck!:)

{{{HUGS}}} I know exactly how you feel. I went weeks without budging and you get so discouraged..BUT..it does finally break. Please hang in there, and do not give up. You can do it, and you will loose the weight and be healthY!!!

Sue, please don't give up. I can understand why you are discouraged but so many things factor into why we have a week where we gain slightly, lose a little or lose a bunch. Just keep with it and the weight will come off. We are here to support you!

You can do it!! Keep a positive attitiude and you will overcome this challange.

Are you exercising?? I know that is the difference for me. I started walking and that has made all the difference in the world.

TOM, too? For heaven's sake, sweetie. Why didn't you say so? I wouldn't have gotten nearly as worried as I did :teeth:

You can do this, we are all going to help you. I'm so glad you aren't going to give up :)

{{{HUGS}}}

Sue- you know Katholyn won't allow you to give up, right? :p

Okay, so you started trying to lose two weeks ago, and haven't seen any positive changes yet. From looking at the WISH roster, I see your plan is "eating sensibly."

If you want to tell us what "eating sensibly" means to you, maybe we can help you with some strategies to jump start your weight loss. Are you trying to stick to a specific caloric total? Do you keep a journal of everything you eat each day? If not, start now. Write what you eat and how much of it you eat. If you will do this faithfully for one week, you'll be amazed at what it will tell you about your habits.

Tell us a little about your plan, about what you've done these past two weeks, and let us help you by critiquing your efforts. That's what friends are for, don't you think?:)

Ok for me eating sensibly is cutting out all biscuits, cakes, chocolate, crisps, butter and only one glass of dry white wine a day. I am also choosing lean meat (chicken or pork) or fish, cooking it without extra fat, having more vegetables and fruit cooked healthily, cutting out butter in sandwiches in favour of low fat alternatives. I must admit that I have been guestimmating portion sizes so I will start to weigh them to be more accurate and I am going to start writing down every single thing i eat in case odd things are slipping in. Although I m not following a specific plan WW or Atkins (which has had a lot of bad press in England lately) I am going to look at some of the recipes from their plans for inspiration.

I am trying to exercise more but this is a little difficult as I am slightly disabled and there are many things I cannot do.

Thanks for all your support it really does help.
Sue

Sounds like you have a good start, Sue. By measuring and recording, you'll have an accurate picture of what you are eating. I "journal" online at Fitday . It doesn't cost, and the tools that are there really help me. One thing to add to your plans, though! WATER It is SO important, so get out there, and start drinking. . .the clear stuff that is! ;) Good luck and keep us posted!

Sue, it sounds like you're doing Weight Watchers! As I read what you're doing, I was just nodding my head right along with you. "Me, too. Yup, that's what I'm doing." :)

You're doing all the right things. You and Debbie have already hit on the only two things that I would comment on: measuring for portion control, and plenty of water.

On weeks that I don't drink my 64 oz of water (about 2 liters, I think) per day, I don't see the scales move the direction I want them to.

So this week, try to:
* measure for portion control
* Journal everything you eat
* drink 2 liters of water daily

If you add these three things what you're already doing, I think we'll be back here celebrating your success next week! I think you have a really good handle on what to do here. Weight Watchers recipes and cookbooks would fit perfectly into your VERY sensible plan.

(I hope I don't come across as bossy here. I'm just really excited about the terrific results you're about to see! I've lost 33 pounds in 16 weeks doing exactly what you've described with not much exercise, so we know it works.):teeth:

Sue, aren't our WISHers just the most positive and helpful people? Our WISH support group is so helpful.

I hope you will join us in transatlantic chat tonight. It starts at 7PM BST. Here's a link for the CHAT ROOM.

Join us, it's fun :)

I'm glad to hear you aren't giving up, Sue! :) You can do it!

Check out http://www.cookinglight.com There might be some good recipes there that you can try, although you'd have to convert the temperature in F to gasmark and our measurements to your measurements...but still, there might be some ideas there for you!

I know you can do this!!! When I joined WISH, I gained weight. I was just doing my own plan, but I was not really keeping track of EVERYTHING I ate, I wasn't exercising as much as I am now and I was still drinking more beer than I should! ;) I joined WW and got serious and have allowed myself one cheat meal (with alcohol) a week. It has really made a difference. It took a while to adjust to the smaller portions. Now I am so much more organized in the kitchen! I know what I can cook ahead and freeze, I go to the grocery store for fresh fruits and veggies often, I've gotten a bazillion great tips on WISH as far as treats to try when I am needing something sweet, or recipes that will suit my tastes (and my husband's).

Stick around here! We are ready and willing to support you. I know that everything I have learned here will be with me for the rest of my life. I will always follow the WW plan, with some modifications when I reach my goal. :) Think of this as a healthy lifestyle change that you can live with forever!!! :)
