A good friend of ours is getting married in Cancun and my dh is in the wedding. We were supposed to leave this morning and come back on Sunday. Well, Tuesday night I get a call from my ds's pediatrician. He had some routine bloodwork done on Monday and apparently the blood culture was growing something, could be strep or staph. Protocol for that was hospital admission, IV antibiotics until the cultures come back negative. He had NO symptoms otherwise! His oncologist told us that if it's strep he can come home today or tomorrow with oral antibiotics, if it's staph he has to stay for the IV antibiotics. So far it looks like strep, but I had to cancel my trip to Cancun because our flight had to leave at 7am this morning. My dh went ahead without me (since he's in the wedding and there was really no reason he needed to stay). It sounds like it may have been a common strep bacteria that we caught early, or that his body was in the process of fighting it off. I'm glad that Matt's going to be fine and that he's getting what he needs, but I'm so bummed out - this was going to my and my dh's first trip together without kids in over 4 years, sort of like the honeymoon we never had. Plus I don't get to see our friends get married. We've been planning it for over a year, I'm just disappointed, especially since this is such a routine thing for Matt (he's on chemo and this sort of thing happens from time to time). My MIL offered to be with him while were were gone, even the doctor said to go ahead and go, that Matt would be fine and they could discharge him to my MIL, but I felt too guilty leaving him there in the hospital while we jetted off to Cancun. To top it all off, we didn't purchase trip insurance so the resort won't give us any of our money back. :( Thanks for letting me vent.

I'm sorry, Steph.

Put on your bikini, lay in a lawn chair in the back yard, drink a margarita, and sing La Cucaraca! Maybe that will help.

I sure hope Matt is o.k.

P.S. FWIW - I would have done the same thing.

That stinks. Can you possibly surprise him tomorrow if your son is doing better by then?

Maybe it's not too late to still go? I mean, you got the go ahead from the doc and you said your MIL can stay with your son. You gotta do something for yourself sometimes.

Maybe you can promise your son a fun day out in the near future, something he would really enjoy; Then he wouldn't feel too bad about you leaving!

Please try to go if you can, you deserve it!!

I really thought about going. I really wanted to, but certain friends were making me feel so guilty for even thinking about it. And I felt like a horrible mom for even considering it. Without being 100% sure of what was going to happen today, I just couldn't leave. There is another flight that leaves tomorrow on a different airline, so I couldn't use my refund/credit voucher that I have with Continental. It would be an additional $800, on top of what we've already spent, and I just can't do it right now. I guess it's just not meant to be.

That stinks. :( You soooo deserve a vacation with your hubby.

I am glad Matt is okay!!! :)

Try Priceline or Hotwire for a cheap flight.

Hope your son feels better soon.

What about going from SNA, you would have to connect in Houston, but it's a possibility.

Well crap, who knew Cancun would be so popular now? I can't find you availabilty. :guilty: I keep forgetting it's Memorial Day weekend.

Can you swing $478? Travelocity has LAX to CUN on Alaska Airlines. That's about the best I can do. I wish you could go.

Did you already cancel the ticket you had? There are one way tickets to Cancun for tomorrow on Alaska for $189. Flight 228. Non-stop no less, out of LAX (not sure where Winchester is, but assuming SoCal?) and freakishly low so they must have a few seats to fill?

If you did there is another one way return ticket for $228 Mexicana 350 to Mexico City then Mexicana 900 to LAX on Monday, if that was when you were returning. If you want to use the refund voucher from Continental there is a $545 one way return flight 1665 through Houston to flight 47 to LAX.

Sometimes on holiday weekends the one ways are the way to go as the airlines try to fill seats going in a certain direction.

You deserve a little sun and romance. :goodvibes

Edited to add that I was looking on Orbitz. :)

Hope you get to work something out. The one way ticket sounds perfect. Glad everything is ok with your son.

Oh, what a bummer. I am sorry you are having this happen. It's hard too because I am sure you feel a little guilty for feeling this way. We all do as moms, but it's perfectly normal. I am glad your little guy is doing okay though.

Miss Jasmine and Snow Brite - you guys rock! Thanks for looking up those flights for me. Matt is doing great, and they are discharging him from the hospital tomorrow. I probably won't get out of there until the early afternoon, so I don't think I'll be able to make it work. FWIW, my dh just sent me an email and said it's rainy and overcast in Cancun, and will be through the weekend. Then again, he could be telling me that to make me feel better, lol!

I'm so sorry your trip didn't work out. I know how much I've looked forward to those "just DH and me" trips in the 15 years we've been married. (There's only been 2 plane type trips and a couple of driving distance trips.) I look forward to them for months. But I think you are an awesome Mommy and I hope that your Matthew feels better soon. (I have a Matthew too.)

Steph I am glad Matt is feeling better but I am so sorry you missed your trip with you new self and everything!

Man Steph, I'm bummed for you. I am so glad that Matt is feeling better though. Tell your DH he better bring back something awesome!
