heres the story we have an aug UY we usually go the end of Jan early feb

we only have a 100 point contract--of which we have 82 left for next Jan 2021 trip as we have to borrow some points
each year

so my plan was to book poly now as its our home resort Jan 24 to 30 for 105 points so need to borrow 23--

at 7 months will try to get a "cheaper" resort--so if I understand this right--for example OKW is 64 points for the same stay

so if at 7 months theres still openings so when I change they take the 64 points minus (first they use the borrowed points) of 23 so now I owe 23 for the new resveration--which comes out of my original 82 which leave 59 points so at this time can those points be banked

before this whole virus mess started I pretty much had this figured out but then this gets thrown into the mix

Im just afraid that things still wont be good at that time but as long as I cancel and bank the points by 30 days before check in I wont lose anything

is all the correct--thanks again for all the great help--planning our first trip a few years ago and then having to cancel it the night before we were to leave just sort of did me in having to deal with holding when I really wasnt exactly sure how this even all worked--too much at once

stay safe

DVC will use the borrowed points first. But when I do the math, I come up with you having 41 points left, not 59.

If you borrow 23 points from UY21 into UY20, you'll have 105 in UY20. If you only use 64 points on the modified reservation, that leaves 41 (105-64=41) which you could bank to UY21.

ETA: I assume you borrowed 18 points from UY20, which is why you said you have 82 points "left" for the January reservation?

I think the one thing that may be different this year is being able to trade out at 7 months, even to OKW.

Things are going to be filled up faster with people rescheduling. We also have people who have extra points to use up and may be staying longer or taking an extra trip.

So, you may or may not be able to change to a trip with less Poijts. Are you going to be okay with that? Is there a chance you won’t go?

Maybe consider booking only the nights without borrowing so that those are not stuck in case something happens to prevent you from going?

thanks for the great reply grumpy

as long as I can bank either the extra points by being able to switch to a lesser point resort at 30 before check in or if things still arent good by then be able to cancel the whole trip--in that case would I still be able to bank the points since we would know 30 days before check in--this is where I get worried about losing points

and I do know that this year will be different as far as switching out at 7 months keeping the poly stayed there last year for the first time and really loved it--

Yes, as long as you cancel at least 31 days...not 30..on advance any current UY points will be stuck.

Borrowed points will not and will expire July 31st, 2021.

thanks for the info on borrowed points--actually I didn't realize that--I just thought you could bank everything if you cancelled before the 31 day
I guess I would be better off booking as many nights I can get with available points

For the recent cancellations due to the resorts being closed they are restoring borrowed points back into the UY they were borrowed from. Technically that is against the rules but they are making exceptions. We don't know if that exception would still be in place in Jan 2021 or not. If it is then the borrowed points would be returned to your 2021 UY and you could bank all of the 2020 points that you used on the reservation as long as you canceled at least 31 days in advance. (although at the moment they also have suspended the holding timeframe because of the resorts being closed). But if DVC has decided in January they can no longer make exceptions for borrowed points then those would expire if not used by July 31, 2021. It's probably safer to assume they won't be making exceptions.

OP another possibility: just wait until seven months and see what you can book. If you find something you like that minimizes borrowing, great. If you don’t, you can still bank your 2020 points and skip a year. That preserves maximum flexibility. It does mean you migh not visit Disney in 2021 but maybe not a bad thing.
