And I needed a place to discuss the books. I don't want to read any of the other threads, they are discussing #7.

First, I want to thank the many people who nudged me into reading them. (a few of them here on the Dis--you know who you are!;) ) These books are amazing, the characters, the ideas...just wonderful.

I just finished #4 last night, I am already on page 66 of #5. (I never thought I'd hate getting close to home when I'm commuting--but I was upset that when I got to the station before mine last night---He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named had just 'come back'!)

I'm am officially finished! Wow. What a great book, great series. I loved the epilogue, I know some people have thought it was cheesy, but it was fine with me.

I've read all of them, but I've just started the whole series over with DD7. We're alternating paragraphs, so I'm afraid it will be pretty slow reading!

Have you tried the books on tape? The narrator is AMAZING.

Go for it :thumbsup2

I'm another "late comer" to Harry Potter, albeit not quite as late as you. ;) I didn't start reading any of them until around when the second movie was on cable, so it's only been a couple years. And since my reading time is limited with two kids, I haven't had the chance to finish #7 yet (I only finished #6 last week).

Our whole family is getting into it right now, though (well, not my 2 year old ;) ). I've been reading the books to my older son each night (we're part of the way into Book 2) and my wife, who had always liked the movies, but never read the books, was so intrigued by the end of Order of the Phoenix, the movie, that she ended up reading all of Half Blood Prince this weekend. She's now waiting anxiously for me to finish the last book, so she can read it. ;)

I've seen the first 2 movies, I plan to watch 3 & 4 soon.

I want to get the audio books.

The thing that got me yesterday with book 4 is when his parents came out of HWMNBN's wand. That made me cry. And then when Mrs. Weasley hugged him, I just about lost it.

The books definitely get darker and more sad as they go on. You will need to stock up on the tissues for books 5. 6, and 7!!

That's the bad part of reading on the train--people look at you funny when you have tears running down your cheeks!

I would think compared to the majority of people on the train, you'd still look like the normal one. ;)

I agree. I have GOF on CD and I LOVE IT. I have listened to it thru many a long car trip. I love the way he does the voices (except for Hermione's). :teeth:

I agree about the CDs. I love all the voices except Hermione's. I think it would be hard to keep all the voices straight in my head if I were the one reading aloud. When I try to do voices while I am reading to the kids, I end up reading everything that way instead of just what the characters are saying.:rotfl2:

Well I'm super super late then because I haven't even started yet. I have seen all the movies, except the most recent one out right now, and I've been saying I'm going to get around to them someday but just haven't. I don't read a whole lot anyway, never have the time it seems.

What is everyone's favorite book? I was wondering if the first one is the best??????

Iliked the first one best just because it seems the most innocent. I love all the books but that one was the sweetest. They get progressively darker with each book.

Ya better get crackin' on that! :teeth: My favorite book was Goblet of Fire #4. LOVED IT. But it was not the best movie, unfortunately. So much was left out.

For that reason, the first movie is still my fav out of all of them. It seems more innocent and magical. But I loved them all!

I just got a coupon from Borders, so I am going to buy at least one of the audio books.

Good question--so far, #4 is my favorite. But #5 is really good, but it's darker for sure. Harry's attitude toward Ron & Hermione for one, Sirius's comments, etc.

Hey Missy! :) I knew you'd love the books once you started reading them. :)

I started reading Harry Potter in 2000, before any of the movies came out. I had my own interpretation of the characters before I saw them on screen and I have to say almost every one of them is depicted almost exactly as I imagined. The only one who I don't think was casted all that well (although I've grown to love her) is Emma Watson, who I think is a little too pretty and poised for the Hermoine of my imagination. My oldest son was only 5 or 6 when he came home from school with a library book he checked out, it was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I was so annoyed with the librarian for giving him a book that was obviously beyond his reading comprehension, but he was so insistent on reading the book I decided I would read it aloud to him. Little did I know we'd all be thanking that librarian 7 years later! :)

My favorite of the series is Goblet of Fire, followed very closely by Order of the Phoenix. If I had to rank the books from most to least favorite, my choices would be:

Goblet of Fire
Order of the Phoenix
Deathly Hallows
Prisoner of Askaban
Sorcerer's Stone
Chamber of Secrets
Half Blood Prince

I agree with the poster who said listening to them on audio is really a whole other enjoyable way to experience the series. Jim Dale is amazing, and so dead on with some of his voices.

I'm so glad you've climbed on board the Hogwarts Express Missy! :)

Thank you for nudging me!

Hi Missy!

I *think* I was one of those who nudged you on when you posted on the thread that discussed the excitement over book 7's release! I think I remember telling you that I had a tough time getting into HP&SS at first.

If you have any questions about the books, post them here. We'll do our best to answer w/o giving anything from the upcoming books away.

I will say that there's also a v. fun board to go to: www.darkmark.com that discusses the books, HP news, etc. They have a message board forum, too. I'm sure the main page will now only carry mentions of any JK Rowling interviews and any info. on the upcoming movies ... and any rumors of future JK Rowling books.

I thought I read on darkmark.com that JKR is going to write two more books that are allegedly *not* HP related. It will be interesting to see if she can carry off other books (esp. if they're a different genre) as well as she carried off HP.
