I'm Loving DD's Summer Reading...

So, DD received her summer reading assignments last week and so far I've finished one book and started the second one, both of which are really good! The first, "The Giver", examines the theme of Utopia by way of a 12 year old boy. The second is part of a twin set, "The Dead and the Gone" and "Life As we Knew It". She is reading the first one which is in the perspective of a 17 year old boy in NYC (the second being the same events from the perspective of a young girl in a small town) living an apocalyptic event (not sure what because I just started reading it). I love these choices!

So, what were your kids assigned? Do you read the books too? (I only do if they look really interesting, lol).

DD loved The Giver and had me read it, as well. It's actually part of a trilogy so if your dd likes that one, she could continue on with the other two. I think the names of the other two books are Gathering Blue and The Messenger.

DD has always been a big reader so I've given her books that I enjoyed at whatever age she happened to be and she's passed on ones that she's enjoyed. I think it's a great way to open a conversation with your kids.

That's why I read them if they look at all interesting ~ it can be difficult to find things in common with preteens and sharing the same books is a great way to develop communication.

DD15, a rising sophmore, will read Cry, the Beloved Country, The Catcher in the Rye, and Three Cups of Tea. I've read two of them and don't plan to read the third!!

DS15 has to read The Soloist, Ender's Game, Walking Across Eygpt, and The Old Man and the Sea. The Soloist was required and I choose the rest for him. He loved, loved Ender's Game and has struggled to finish The Soloist. He just can't get into it.

He also has to finish reading the NC DMV manual because he starts Driver's Ed next week.

My DD12 has 26 Battle of the Books selections to read by April. So far she has read Phineas Gage, The Summer of my German Soldier, Flush, and Peak.

I do enjoy reading the same books as my children. We've had some great conversations.

I read The Giver in 6th grade. I thought it was pretty interesting. I haven't re-read it since.

I'm going to be a sophomore this fall & I love the summer reading choices. I love reading and finished my summer reading book before school even ended. I read Story Of A Girl by Sara Zarr. It was a very easy read. I love reading about teenage pregnancies/sex encounters. It's so interesting to see how the character deals with them.

I loved, loved, loved these books, too! You definitely have to read all three to get the full experience.

My Ds11 is reading 2 books - the first was "crash" it was okay basic reading the whole 6th grade had to do regardless of your level. His Honor book though he is reading Zach's lie. Very good book about a family placed in the witness protection program due to the father dealing the a drug cartel inSouth Amer.
Although for a kid who doesn't care to read this is one challenging summer.

Check online to see if your library has these audio books. Your DS can listen to them on CDs. Also, many books can be downloaded onto an ipod or mp3 player.

I am a mother of a dyslexic child and a former English teacher myself. I know that listening to good literature raised my son's reading comprehension, vocabulary and believe it or not fluency.

He scored a 95% on his reading EOGs this year. I was just trying to help a parent whose child hates to read.

Amen! As a 2nd grade teacher, I use audio books all the time. They are a very valuable tool!

DD just came back from the library -

she reccomends Kiki Starke (about a girl who goes underground, finds the underground railroad - and discovers she is Anastasia - ok I should read it, but I havent!)

and Meg Cabot has a 1800 series she really enjoys!

I just didnt understand Catcher in the Rye! I think I'm the wrong gender, plus I couldnt get thru all the times the main character used the F word!

However I think A Separate Peace was wonderful!!
