I'm looking to come for a vacation to London next Jan. I am looking for a place to stay that is nice but not really expensive. There will be another couple and my dh & I. We are planning on staying about a week and then we are going to be going to Israel from England and then returning to England before coming back to Canada. I was wondering if anyone on this board had any suggestions. With the exchange rate anything that is over 70 pound is too much. That is about $150.00 for us. We had thought of going somewhere other than London but it will be Jan. and we are only there for a week with 2 of those days travel days. A self contained place with 2 double bedrooms are also something we might be interested.

St. Margaret's Hotel is a family owned small hotel with a full cooked breakfast included in the price. My family stayed here last November when they came and visited me while I was studying abroad. It is in a fabulous location - just down from the British Museum, close to several Tube stops, and walking distance to the West End and many other places. (I was lucky enough to live across the street from this hotel in a flat for 5 months - an amazing amazing location, I can't say how much I miss it!)

According to their rates posted - 80 pounds for a double with shower, cheaper (65.50) if you are willing to share a bathroom. My family had a room with full bathroom, but I did notice the shared bathrooms were very clean and constantly being attended to. The rooms are very nicely decorated and the service was good and very friendly - not a 4 star hotel as it is small, and for that location in London, very cheap. If you could stretch the budget slightly at all (or are willing to share a bathroom), I highly recommend it - very tradtional "English" hotel, not a standard chain. Plus, the full cooked breakfast was a good way to fill up in the morning and save on meal costs later on in the day.

Thanks for the info. I will check into all 3 sites. We are actually going to Tel Aviv. Our hope was to fly to London and stay there for about a week and then fly to Tel Aviv. We would then fly from Tel Aviv to London and then home to Canada. It is just a way of getting a little extra vacation in.
