I wear very little make-up: foundation mixed with face cream, little blush and mascara.

My hair is permed since it is so thin and bits of gray are coming in. I don't want to color it as I feel bad having to damage it already by perming.

Have you changed any of your beauty routines after hitting 40???

RosieRosie,

I just turned 40 in July. Let me tell you I am ready for an overhaul! LOL!

I am a natural redhead and my gray is really starting to show through.
My sister is five years older than me, and she has been coloring her hair for years. I hate to say this, but it does not make her look any better. That is why I hesitate to color!

I am more careful about putting on makeup. I notice it is more clumpy. Isn't that terrible! I make sure I put on oil of olay, then foundation.
If I did not wear makeup, people would want to take me to the hospital. I am sooooo white~!

Good luck through the 40's, I think we all need it!

But, I must tell you, I have never been more sure of myself, and comfortable with myself than I am now!
Just trying to enjoy the 40's before I turn 50 !!!!! AAAAHHHH!
Have a good one!

I just turned 45 in July, don't have many greys but never intend to color my hair, I will grow old gracefully.:D My hair is dry, so much that I have to condition it alot, coloring would make it worse.

Something I did recently was cut my hair fairly short from shoulder length. At 44 I was ready for a drastic change. I think that my hairstylist is wise in cutting my hair to frame my face. I tell her what I want and she modifies it to suit me. I say, go for the color in your hair as it is the first thing people notice about someone else.
A sadder problem for me, do I apply make-up to may double chin? I notice a beautician at the drugstore didn't apply make-up there. Maybe I'll have to give up foundation, I don't know.

You can get your hair colored even though it is permed, I have been doing it for years! Just go to a GOOD salon and be sure to wait at least a week after perming before any color treatments.

There is NO WAY I will let my hair get gray, LOL...I know that if I let it go "natural" I would have a TON of gray at age 42, it runs in my family.

You'll looke at least five years younger instantly by getting rid of the gray!

Good luck! :)

an 'old 43-year-old"???? Hey- I resemble that remark:rolleyes: . I've been coloring my hair for years-high maintenance as it's naturally very dark, but worth it. as for cosmetics, less is more as you get older, and avoid anything with too much shine to it, especially around the eyes.

I turned 49 in August and I too feel like I am beginning to look old. I used to color my hair as it is almost all gray. But I have decided to stay gray!:o

I'm 43 and I've been coloring my hair for a long time.

Instead of an all over hair color, you may just want to highlight your hair. I believe that as you get older, you don't want your hair to be darker, you want to go lighter. Highlighting is a good way to do so. It can help to disguise those grays and is not as high maintenance as all over color.
I get my hair permed and 2 weeks later I get highlights. :)

Boots,
Good for you. My oldest sister used to color her hair. Well...she is all gray now, and look beautiful!

I hope I look that good when I am 54!

:p Uhhhhh, I think if I had a beauty routine, it wouldn't help anyway! LOL!! :p  :p   :teeth: It's pretty bad when you walk past a mirror and wonder who the heck that was that you just saw!! :p

I am 38 and if I did not color, I would be 50% or more grey by now. I only started coloring it about a year ago. I am not much into make up but will use lip stick, eyeliner and a little foundation if I remember. Not into perfume much either...never into the girly girl stuff. I am just not the type...very tom boysih I think even at 38. If you call washing my face twice a day, using toner and a moisturizer a cosmetic routine then I have one, otherwise...that is it... oh well

Saffron, I know exactly what you mean. I scare myself sometimes....lol. Or even better, my kids saw a picture of me when I was younger...My DD says "can you believe mommy ever looked the pretty?" Other DD,"she was real pretty back then"

:( :( :(

Awwww {{{{Hugs}}}} Glo. :D I saw the pictures from Alex's party! You are very pretty!

I remember when my niece was absolutely, utterly shocked at my age. Not because she thought I looked good for my age, but because she couldn't believe anyone could possibly LIVE past the age of 32.  ;)

LOL Glo, we had a picture of me when I was about 20 displayed on our mantel for the longest time, but I finally took it down when DS asked me who it was. :teeth:

Rosie why not try a semi-permanent color. They actually condition your hair, and if you do not like it it washes out.

I work in a beauty salon. So I have always colored my hair. I'm not carzy about the salt and pepper look that comes with having darker hair. Yes it looks good on some, but not me.

They say as you age you should go a few shades lighter. It brightens your face and makes you look younger. At my age I'm past the trying to look younger stage, I'm trying to stop the looking old stage. If it means coloring my hair, you bet I'm going to. If it means getting facials to soften the wrinkles, you bet I'm going to.

It's time to do something for yourself, get the color done and don't look back. You'll be suprised at how much better you'll feel.

My wallet feels the pain of this question! I just plopped down almost $200 at a Bobbi Brown counter the other night! I saw a picture of myself (almost 44 now) the other day, and was horrified at how awful my normal make-up that I had been wearing for several years, looked. Like someone had painted a brown mask on my face! So - off to Bobbi where the consultant agreed it was definitely time to make some changes (I know, she's paid to sell - but she was right!) So, lighter foundation and powder, totally different blush and lipstick, and a product to minimize some of the skin damage I've been noticing. I am very happy with the new results. It was a worthwhile investment.

As for hair coloring, I started to go gray in my mid-20s, so I've been coloring my hair for a LONG time! I don't even want to think about what's under here. But, I have fun with the color. I figure if I'm gonna color it, I might as well play with it, so I change colors frequently. Right now my very dark hair is much redder than usual and it looks great! Really brightened up my face.

I also agree with the poster who just cut her hair short. I went down that road and my appearance and my morning routine are much happier with shorter hair!

I was once told that I should celebrate getting older because the alternative is so much worse! Anyhow, I'm 43 and my hair is at least 50% gray but I color it in a shade slightly lighter than my original color. When it gets done, people always comment how much brighter my face looks. Then if you get your brows waxed, a pedicure, a facial, apply a little brightening natural tone makeup, you feel like a million bucks. Try it. You'll like it. Better yet, you'll love the comments.

Ok, I have you all beat. First of all, your hair doesn't turn gray. It turns white. It just looks gray when its mixed in with your natural color.(Hair stylists, back me up here!)
I started getting white hairs on my head when I was in 4th grade!! The kids that sat behind me in school used to yank them out! I had very dark, almost black, hair. By the time I was 16, the sides of my head were all white. My hair was feathered, as the style then, and I looked like I had white wings on my head. I was pretty much all white by 23, when I started having my babies. I am 46 right now, totally white, and I throw a little blonde color on my hair once every couple months. I look like a white-blonde and everybody thinks I bleached my hair to get it this color. It runs in my family, my little brother is snow white also, he looks like Kenny Rogers and he's 38.
My mom's hair has been snow white since she was 22, and I've never seen her with any different color. It's Beautiful!
Here is DD and myself. I haven't found any white hairs on her head, so I guess it didn't pass on to her.

what a beautiful head of hair you have it's gorgeous and so are you!! Thanks for sharing the picture!..... goof

As for choosing colors, my hairdresser says to stay within 2 shades of your natural color. That is most flattering. I would like to go blonder, but the darker blonds do make me look younger. I am dark blonde by design. I feel so good when I go to get my hair colored, I come out of there looking more like the natural me than what nature intended!
