Someone once mentioned once on disboards that for your digital camera there is like this little hard drive thing that you can buy and attach to your digital camera to and upload photos and small videos too.

Does anyone know what this is? Its just that my disneyland trip is in a few weeks and I usually take my laptop, but it decided to break down on me and I cant afford to get it fixed until I get back. So im out of a hard drive.

I take a lot of pics and small videos on my digital camera and since im going to DL for 10 days and I take several hunderd pics a day, that I am gonna run outa room on my camera and have no where to store them. :confused3

I have a Wolverine Flashpac with a 40 Gig HDD that I really like. Depending on HDD size, they're between $100-200. No color viewing screen, just an LCD which shows the functions. Just put any card in and press the copy button and you're done. Works as an external hard drive too.

We went to a Kodak Station and uploaded the pics on a CD at the parks - then I emptied the memory card. The CD's held about 100 pics - we left w/ at least 5 CD's...I still have them today as a back up.

This is an alternative if the device you are referring to is too costly.

I keep looking at these devices and still may get one but for now it seems that it is more cost effective to buy more memory cards. The cards are also much more reliable.

WOW I didnt know they had this feature at DL. That could save me a ton of money.

Thanks for all the links and such everyone. Thats been a huge help.

There are also camera connect devices to hook your camera or memory card to certain mp3 players to use them as storage. Though I just don't trust a hard drive based storage solution as my only storage solution, especially when traveling. I don't trust just keeping it on my memory card either (I have learned they use electrons for the gates and are still subject to damage from certain electrical and magnetic fields).Of course I take the whole desktop computer with me when I travel, gotta play those MMO's, so everything goes onto disc
!
No, I'm not paranoid. But I have had lightning strike my house and fry every hard drive simultaneously. Not fun. I learned always have a back up for your back up!

There is another option, Apple sell a camera connector which you fix to your Ipod and can use that for storage. So anyone with a 30 or 80 Gb Ipod for a small outlay you can turn it into an external hard drive for your camera.:thumbsup2

Yes, this is what I was talking about. I have read will work with all the usb iPods with a hack to the firmware (I read it, have not done it, don't know the validity of it). Belkin puts out one forthe iPod as well and I have heard that it is better than Apple's accessory, though I have yet to get either one for my iPod. I have also seen one for the Zen and I imagine there is likely one planned for the Zune, if it is not out already. My nephew was telling me that there is one hard drive driven media player out there right now that will let you direct connect your camera via the usb port on hte player, though I can't recall which one at the moment. (must be the sleep deprivation)

Gotta update myself...

There is a model of the Zen which has a CF slot built in, an adapter available for other card types. Archos makes a media player/recorder that you can hook your camera directly to. Toshiba also has one you can hook some cameras directly to. So if you are looking at hard drives for photo storage, why not get one that can play video and mp3's too. Also the ones I have looked at do not support RAW, just jpeg. Make sure whatever you look at supports the file format you want to work in.

(tangent rant) Gee, I am really wondering why Apple does not have these features in the latest iPods. Oh wait, this is Apple who sells you an iPod with NO wall power adapter now - the first gen had the wall power adapter, now you gotta pay more for it! Seriously, the more I read and look at other mp3 players the more I am so glad my last iPod was free! I would be really ticked at myself for buying it, as is I am glad DH won it for me. (/tangent rant)

Burning CDs at the parks is expensive, especially when you realize that it'll take three CDs to hold a single 2g card's worth of pictures. I think it's something like $13/CD... so to empty a 2g card is $39 plus tax... or $20-30 for another 2g card if you buy beforehand. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Hard drives, especially 2.5" laptop drives like in the portable units, are not reliable and if you're going to trust all your vacation photos to them, it's a good idea to buy two complete units and do redundant backups of all your stuff.
