but I was going to pay for my seats and it shows

the first class as unavaible along with the last 3 rows--among others

usually we upgrade just before we leave but does really that first class is already booked

Are you referring to AirTran's business seats? If so, if you are looking for Business Class fares and there are none available, that's usually indicative that they are sold out for that category (at least on one segment of your trip if you have a connecting flight).
