Hello Everyone,

Let me start with an introduction I'm a young 30+ female :wave2: with some serious plans to get healthier and shed some excess baggage over the next year. I've been carrying some excess weight for a few years now and though I'm healthy I know that I could be much much healthier. I'm currently planning my :bride::groom: for a little over a year out. I have long term goals with lifechanging outcomes. So I know that with some commitment and support my goals are deffinetly achievable.

I have a few goals I'd like to share (I think I've read somewhere that in order to make changes you need to announce your intentions publicly) or something like that. I'll see if I can find the article and post it later about making changes.

1) To be in the best shape I've ever been in both physically and mentaly when I get married. Just figure why not work on both the outside and inside.

2) To loose some lbs so that I'll be in the best baby making shape. I mean I could make babies now but I think I need to clean out cobwebs, stock the internal fridge etc. I know I'm not a teenager and I'd like to try my best for a healthy pregnancy.

3) I want to be able to run like my life depended on it. http://runforyourlives.com I just sighned up and I can't stop grinning about it.

I plan to encourage everyone I know to run or watch (extra motivation for me). I'll check in every so often and give updates and just look for anyone crazy enough to join even if its in another city. Wish me luck and feel free to visit, post and join me on this Journey.

I'm delighted to meet you!

I've found that running is a chain reaction in a life. You start developing so many other good habits to support it that it's a total game changer.

That said, fair warning: It's tough to lose weight and train seriously as a runner. The obvious solution is to not train for serious distance or speed until the weight comes off...which has the added benefit of giving you a FANTASTIC base conditioning if you decide that you need to go all Pheidippides.

Something to be aware of, encouraging friends to come watch you Run For Your Life, that event charges the spectators. That's why I chose not to run that race. I love a good adventure race but I don't want to encourage this practice. It does sound like a great event though and I hope you rock the heck out of it.

Hi Evi
What a cool race that looks like!! I wish there was one closer to me! Congrats on your upcoming wedding and getting your body ready for baby making :cool1: I was the thinnest I'd been when I got pregnant in Oct 2009- and it makes the pregnancy so much easier - and helps the weight come off afterwards. I became a runner May of 2009 when my mom bribed me with a trip to Disney if I would do the Everest Challenge with her (we had a blast)! In 5 months I lost 25lbs and like ChimmeySweepGeorge said running started a chain reaction of good habits, I quit smoking, started eating better ect. It felt great to be ready physically and emotionally for a wee one! I think it's great that you're already registered for a race and that you're encouraging people to watch you- it holds you accountable- and will give you support through your journey!
Rock On! :cheer2:

Hi George,
Thank you for the encouragment. I know most likely they will turn me into a zombie but I do think its a good event for me to try to participate in. I don't think its a real serious race definitly not the Boston Marathon. Its open to anyone over 14 and you can skip any challenge(s) you don't want to do but you become an automatic zombie and disqualify for prizes. Becoming a zombie for me wouldn't be a sign of losing not trying would be.
I think you should reconsider the race though. Let me explain why I chose it to be one of my goals. Well the obvious who wouldn't run from a zombie =). No seriously though I really read the info on the site and it sounds like its going to be a really fun event. They charge spectators becuase the fee serves as admission to an after party that goes into the evening and includes a live band that they have touring with the event. So its almost like a party cover/concert ticket charge. I do think the price to participate is a little steep but they are renting a large area of land for the event its somewhere around 200 acres, it costs money to turn people into zombies, they are donating a portion of the proceeds to the redcross and I think its a unique event. I read somewhere that I think the travel channel or TLC is doing a show about the race. Maybe once you see that you'll reconsider. Plus your in shape you know the zombies won't get you. I know most likely I will become a zombie but I like being able to have the goal to build the stamina to participate in an event that I feel comfortable participating in. I already recruited DF he's excited and has started asking some friends to sign up. I told him if they get me its ok if he runs for his life I understand and if I have to walk to the finish line thats ok with me. But I think the zombies will motivate me to stay on my toes.

Thank you so much AllieSue. I know I have a long way to go but I figure giving myself a goal is going to push me to do it. I did read somewhere on the site that if enough people want to have the race in a city they will make it happen and are adding dates through 2012 so who knows they may come to you. Who would have thought of wanting zombies to come to your city lol.

I am going to warn you that it is addictive. Once you can finish your 1st 5k, you'll look book and say oh, that was easy and sign up for a 10k or a half! If you need more motivation or accountability, a lot of us are on dailymile.

I think you should reconsider the race though. Let me explain why I chose it to be one of my goals.

First, don't let any of my reasons discourage you. I'm sure you'll love it.

These are my hangups and I'm sure the race will be great fun. I've known details about this race for some time and it is VERY much my sort of thing. I'm a Spartan racer and I'm the community owner of zombie_survival at LiveJournal. This is SO right up my alley and it pains me to take this stance.

I LOVE spectators at races and I don't want to see the practice of charging them spread. Anything that makes them less inclined to show up to a race is a negative to me that can't be surmounted. A majority of the race magic I've experience was from the spectators. Again, just me personally, a party at the end of the race isn't why I come, I'm there for what I get along the course...that's where my joy lies.

Now if you want more people for a Warrior Dash or Spartan, I am there!

:thumbsup2

CONGRATS on your wedding and your decision, Evi!!

I also agree that you'll get hooked after your first 5k!

That race looks like fun, good luck!

LOL, how timely! A good friend just did this in Maryland and he "survived", with one flag left. The "Zombies" were relentless and he had to smack at them while climbing a cargo net obstacle. Can you imagine climbing such a net and having Zombies reaching through the net to grab your flags? Ewwww and Yikes!!! His GF didn't do so well and "died", but finished the 5K. Early in the race he got a gash on his leg while climbing through a plastic tube. So, be aware, it's not without risks, LOL.

BTW, the medal was AWESOME and if I could get past people in zombie makeup grabbing at me, I'd do it for the medal alone.

Good luck on achieving your goal!!!
