After many years of scheming and dreaming, I've finally decided to pull the trigger and I'm going to buy into DVC tomorrow at SSP. I talked to my guide today. It is his day off so we're going to get things going tomorrow. Unfortunately, I cannot get the friends & family promo and that is my own stupid fault for not checking in with the Disboard for ages, but I figure the $700 or so I'd save is a wash over 50 years LOL

I do have one question, though, and I'm wondering if you guys might know the answer.

I'm going to put down the $500 deposit tomorrow on my credit card and then pay an additional 20% when it is due. My guide told me I would not have to pay that for 60 days. I know that I can schedule a trip as soon as I'm in the system, but do you think I can schedule it for a trip before I've paid the rest of the down payment?

I'm actually not going to WDW until late August/early September, but I just so happen to be going out to Disneyland next month and I was planning on staying at one of the off-site motels because the prices at the DL resorts are crazy, but if I could use points I'd definitely use some to stay at the Grand Californian for two nights. I've been wanting to stay there since before they started building it (I used to be a DL passholder, but now I live in Boston). Do you think this is possible or should I try and get the downpayment submitted in full before I go to Cali?

Yes it is possible, Good luck Welcome to the DIS! Welcome Home!

It may not be possible to use your points--particularly outside the DVC system--that quickly. When you call it takes about a week for the paperwork to arrive and then there is a waiting period of 14 days during which DVC sits on the docs. During that period you have the right to rescind the deal if you wish.

Only after that period will the closing actually occur. So, while DVC will let you book your first trip before the closing has occurred, you usually can't stay until after the closing. All said it can take 4-6 weeks for the process to complete.

Booking outside of DVC complicates matters further since there are some behind-the-scenes things that have to happen with your points to facilitate the trade.

Please let us know what you find out. I'll be curious to hear whether DVC can make this happen or not.

I recently purchased SSR and put the $500 deposit on my cc. I made sure my guide knew I wished to make a ressie ASAP. He said he would call the next day (since I bought so late in the day) with my member ID# and in fact he did. I was in the system and made my ressie immediately after receiving my ID#. No problems for me to make my ressie the day after I purchased.

I do not know about ressies outside of the DVC at WDW though, especially in the time frame you are working under like tjkraz just stated. Ask your guide.

Yeah, making a reservation after the verbal commitment isn't a big deal since DVC will just cancel the booking if the closing doesn't occur as expected. They will have lost nothing.

But actually using the points is a different story. It's kinda like moving into your new house before you close on it. Until the closing, you don't actually OWN the house yet.

DVC used to have paperwork that new members could sign, agreeing to reimburse Disney for any accommodations at the standard room rates if the closing did not occur by fault of the new member. You don't hear of that happening much anymore. And in this case, using points outside of the DVC resorts adds another level of complexity.

I'm just curious to hear if DVC is willing or able to accommodate under these circumstances.

My understanding is that you need to wait until after you close to use points outside of the DVC resorts.

Call your guide and ask specifically before you make any plans based on the answers you've received here.
