I'm getting concerned about Feb 2006

Does everyone realize that if you see a good fare on travelocity or expedia, etc. you should go directly to the airline site and see if it's the same - you won't pay any service fee this way!

Interestingly, I have found some low fares for President's week NY to FL on websites like kayak.com that are about $190 round trip, but when I get directed to the airline or other website to buy it, it says that the fare is no longer available. Also, when I check the airlines website directly, the fare is hundreds of dollars more than on these types of search websites. Recently, I saw an incredible $165 roundtrip fare from Delta on a search website, but I was unable to buy it. Therefore, I called Delta directly and the Delta ticket agent told me the cheapest nonstop during that week (Fri, 2/17 through Sat 2/25) was over $600!!!. Go figure! I will just keep checking all the sites periodically. I am hopeful that something will open up that is fairly reasonable. Unfortunately, I don't have much leeway with my dates, and really want nonstop flights, especially with children. I'll let everyone know if I find anything helpful out there.

By the way, has anyone ever flown Spirit Air? What was your experience? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Spirit is a perfectly reasonable low-cost carrier. We used them for the first time last President's week out of DTW---good fares, direct flights, though I did return through TPA---and I would happily fly them again.

Thanks for the feedback on Spirit. I actually tried purchasing tickets on Spirit that I found today on Cheaptickets. com. The fare was $191 nonstop, roundtrip from LGA to MCO from Fri, Feb 17th to Sat. Feb 25th. Based on my research, this was a very good price. After submitting the purchase information including my cc #, I received an email from Cheaptickets stating that my purchase could not be confirmed and therefore my order was cancelled. The same thing happened to some friends who tried to book the same flights through Cheaptickets. It seems like a bit of a scam to get info from people to use for marketing, etc. Well, I don't plan to use Cheaptickets.com again. I am also continuing to finding other cheap Spirit airfares on sites like Orbits and Kayak.com, but when I go to purchase the tickets, I keep getting told that they are not avaiable and the fares are now hundreds of dollars more. Again, seems like a little attempt at bait and switch. In fact, when I check the airlines directly, there is nothing less than $300 r.t. for nonstop LGA/JFK to MCO for that week. Anyway, I figure that I have ten months before my trip, which is about 300 days of searching to find something reasonable!!!

My experience from last year is that it is presently too early to book on spirit. They list fares this far out, but on their own site they are 3x what they "normally" are. However, they must not be communicating their inventory properly to the industry tools; the 171 you are seeing is probably their "normal" fare. For example, the normal roundtrip from DTW right now is 256; flights at ITA in late Feb/early March are listed at that price, but spiritair.com has them much higher.

When we get closer to the dates, about six months or so, they should come back to "normal", based on what happened last year---a very heavy President's Week.

Don't fear and don't give up. I just picked up tickets from FLL to LGA on 2/25 for 89 one way. The day before the same seat was over 400,the day after 299. Just keep checking everyday if possible and grab the seats if the price looks good.
