Is anybody else getting lots of fake emails asking for personal info, too? The one I received today was from supposedly from Ebay, telling me that someone had remotely accessed my account, even giving an ISP, dates, and times. It also stated that my account would be shut down if I did not respond with my personal data.

FAT CHANCE!!!!!!!

I immediately forward them to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com and I get a quick reply that they are not legitimate emails and a description of how to spot an official one.

I never, never, ever reply or give details of my account(s) and my accounts are still safe.

Anybody else seen a rise in the activity?

Yes, we have. Just yesterday, we got one that said something about having to pay for "fees" just to use eBay. Of course, it provided a link where you could give them your credit card info.

Count me in too.. For the past week or so I have gotten either a fake Paypal or fake eBay daily - AND a fake AOL one as well that wanted my credit card#, etc..

Not a chance in the world!!

I get at least 4-5 a week from the fake Ebay. There was one day I got two. I am so tired of it; I just forward it onto spoof, but they keep coming!!!! <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_2_200.gif' border=0></a>

Nothing yet from e-bay, but I recently got this from PayPal:

Protect Your PayPal Account

Dear xxxxxxxx,

Recently, some PayPal members have reported suspicious-looking emails and fake websites. As a result, we'd like to remind you of some tips to help keep your PayPal account secure:
Safely access your PayPal account by opening up a new web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Netscape) and type in the following: https://www.paypal.com/

Never give out information in an email; PayPal will not ask you to provide personal information such as your password, social security number, bank account and credit card numbers

Do not download attachments, software updates, or any application to your computer via a link you received in an email; PayPal will not ask you to download anything for your account to work

Choose a unique password and change it every 30-60 days

If you think you have received a fraudulent email, please forward the entire email to spoof@paypal.com and then delete it. For more information, visit the PayPal Security Center.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to PayPal.

Dear xxxxxxxx,

That is actually a legitimate email from Paypal. I've noticed that paypal never (it seems like never) puts active links in their emails. They require you to open a new browser window and type it in.

I always like to view the source on these spoofs and find where it is redirecting too. It's like a game.

I received a fake one from AOL while I was in FL. It threatened to close my account immediately if I did not confirm my login - to please sign in below. I really needed my account from there, so I did, and it sent me to an official-looking site. I felt funny about it, so I changed my password within an hour. Sometime (at least a week) later, I went to a site that I don't visit or order from very often and my shipping address had been changed to somewhere in IL!! Luckily, this site required a confirmation of billing address which this person could not supply. If I hadn't changed my password who knows what might have happened.

I received a couple of similar notices from ebay and paypal since that time and don't fall for them any more.

I get an e-mail just like that from Compuserve (part of AOL) but it looked fishy to me so I never responded to it.

I've gotten a few spoof emails (not from Ebay... yet) that look legit but anyone with half a brain knows that no legitimate company sends you an email asking for all sorts of stuff.

I usually delete them but sometimes (if the text boxes allow) I put "nasty" messages in there and send it back.

Both with address you personally in an email. The spoofs are addressed to Dear Member.

I had one from PayPal last week. It was quite convincing, but I went to PayPal's directly site to see if any new information or updates were needed.

Oh NO!! I got one of these just today and since I had only signed up with them a couple of days ago didn't even think twice about it!! I did fill it out !!! What should I do??? Only after I sent it did I think it was odd that they asked for my cc number when I had registered a checking account. ???? HELP!!!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! You folks on the DIS are the BEST!! Always right there with info when its needed. I called paypal and they verified it was a hoax, had me change password and than called bank. Lucky for me I had already ordered and recieved a new card in the mail today to replace the one that was compromised. So we closed the card and activated the new one. Paypal says the folks can't get my checking info (since I didn't give that)...what about my email accounts? since they did ask for email address and password???? Is there any other damage they can do with this information???

I don't know about the email addresses, but I would change any password that you gave out IMMEDIATELY and don't make the new one in any way, shape or form similar to the one you gave out..

Sorry you had to go through this scary experience.. Never, ever, ever give out that kind of info in response to an email.. Ditch the email (or send it to spoof@ wherever) - no matter how professional looking it may appear - and then go to the site in question by TYPING in the web address yourself.. Never, ever, ever follow or click on a "link" that comes in the email.. Better yet, CALL Paypal, AOL, or whoever on the telephone and ASK why they need this information..

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Best of luck to you!
