I am the room mom for DS's kindergarten class. Every year our PTA hosts a fundraising night where one event is a silent auction on themed basket (i.e. Hotwheels, Barbie, etc..). Each class randomly pulls a theme out of a hat. Well guess what our kindergarten teacher pulled out????? SCRAPBOOKING THEME!!! Woo Hoo!! I am excited to create this basket and hope that it will bring in the highest amount of money for the night! I've been thinking about ideas on how to put this together without looking like a basket full of variety pish posh stuff. So....does anyone have any suggestions? Should I narrow it down to a "Disney" theme, "School Days" theme or just basic scrapbooking supplies. Any suggestions or recommendations will certainly be welcomed!!!! I'm excited about this project.

I found some great clearance stuff recently at Target and Michael's, including basics like a color wheel and some journaling pens. Since I assume you are paying for this basket (??), ask friends to give you their weekly Michael's or AC Moore coupons. I would include some basic starter stuff (steel ruler, scissors, tape runner) to get the beginning/non-scrappers to bid on it, but also include some really cute stuff like dimensional stickers, rubber stamps, eyelets, ribbons, papers, so that more advanced scrappers want it too. Also, maybe one current issue of CM or SS magazine

If you were going with a theme I would say either a school theme or a baby theme. Think about it.... wouldn't you say that MOST people start scrapping when they have kids??? Or want to scrap because they have kids?? (Yes, I know that lots of people WITHOUT kids scrap too, but since this is a school event.....) HTH. Good luck!......P

Mismulan!! You LUCKY girl!! We do this also for our school and make ALOT of money for the school. Last year the office staff had scrapbooking. They collected so much stuff they made it into 3 different baskets!! A year before one of our classrooms had scrapbooking and wasn't near as good. For some reasons our parents just don't help as much as they should. You'll have the same 4 or 5 moms to help w/parties, field trips and fund raisers. I have been on the PTO at this school for the last 5 yrs and we have never set a theme on scrapbooking. We're just grateful to get anything that relates to it!!

I have 2 daughters at the same school--one in 1st grade, the other in 4th. I told my 1st grade teacher we needed to do either Disney or scrapbooking!
If we get either one of those, I'll chair it. Next to travel, I figure I know those 2 topics best of all. :goodvibes

What other themed baskets do you do for your silent auction? We have UT Vols, TN Titans, games, school supplies, office supplies, gardening, Pets, boy babies, girl babies, bakery items (this is always a big hit), Christmas, and some others I can't think of right now. We also have gift certificates donated from various local companies....nail salons, oil changing places, restaurants etc.

Thanks for starting a great thread!

I would keep it to a school days theme or a scrapbooking supplies theme. If you get too specialized you may narrow down who will bid. :flower:

it sounds like the consensus say "school days" theme. I haven't presented anything to the parents in the classroom yet. Disboards is who I run to when I have news like this to share!!!! There are 19 children. My basket have to be completed by Sept 21st so from now until then, I'd have to start shopping...

So, my basket should have all the basics....

Ideas please! I need to type a memo to the parents. Thanks for all your help and suggestions! I value everyone's!

A lot of the things in our baskets are giftcards. Maybe you could see if your local scrapbook store would make a donation or even if your Creative Memories consultant in town would make a donation. Another thing we made sure to offer is that the parents can give a cash donation instead of supplies and then the person in charge spent the money to get extras to fill the basket. Are you going to put an album in there?

yes, I am including an album because I think that's a big draw too. I have a CM tanzanite 12 x 12 album that I haven't opened yet so I'll donate that. Or should I just do a front loading album??

I just read in CK magazine how Lisa Bearnson bought some premade layouts at a silent auction fund raiser. This may be a good idea to make some school or general children layouts or elements for pages. Good luck!

I've won sb baskets at school fund raisers, & they were all Creative Memories items - generic theme. I can always use paper, stickers, etc. This last one (in the spring) also had a small CM scrapbook. You might want to consider that not everyone bidding on it will be a new scrapper. Have fun creating your basket!!

Maybe since you are including the album you could check with a consultant in town to see if she would give a free lesson in scrapbooking. My consultant is very willing to sit and show you how to do all that stuff. If the person bidding wants to get into scrapbooking a free lesson might be a good incentive to get it.

what a great idea to have my CM consultant donate a free workshop! I am going to do just that.

JudithM - you're right, not everyone will be a beginner so this basket has to cater to newbies and veterans. basic supplies like paper and embellies will be good for everyone.

angelmom - I was thinking about a few pre-done layouts too. I've decided on the School Days theme.

Recently there was an article in our local paper saying how scrapbooking has become a $3 billion dollar industry. I believe it and I hope our class basket will bring in a lot of money!

c'mon girls, keep those ideas coming!

we did this too at a recent fund raiser. Must say I was a little sad about the amount roughly we made about 50% of the actual cost. Not to be a downer. But luckily all of it was donated.
Things I would do different:
1. add gift cards to local craft stores such as mike's or a LSS
2. have both a 12x12 and 8x8
3. loads of adhesive (this is a big draw especially for the experienced scrapper)
4. instead of a basket use something more "scrapper friendly" Such as a cube

not sure what else I would do....but good luck!
