I'm English, I DONT! wear a speedo :)

I saw a travel show once and they tried to explain it, it was similar to what was said earlier. Most people dont have pools in the UK, so in the summer if you want to swim you go to the local public pool. And to stop people from wearing street clothes in the pool, they had very strict rules, only skin tight attire was allowed, so either a bikini or one piece for women, and the speedo for Men, no trunks of any type were allowed. And so after years and years of having to wear them you get used to them and that is what you wear whenever you go to a pool regardless of what country you might be swimming in.
Makes sense to me i suppose, i hope that is the truth anyways. I would hate to think ANYONE would want to wear those because they think they look good in them. Whats weird is, everyone i know makes fun of them, just like everyone on here, yet you still see some people wearing them. Kind of like Mullets. Everyone knows mullets are about the worst hairstyle ever, yet you still see some people with them, i dont get it. You will NEVER find me with either a mullet or a speedo. although that might make for a funny image. Some huge fat hairy redneck with a billy ray mullet in a yellow speedo, that would make me laugh for days. haha

I am English, living in the US now. I hate to say it but when my Dad visits I have to remind my kids that in different places people wear different things and please be polite as you can hurt peoples feelings.... all this went right out the window when he came out of his room one day dressed for dip in our pool!

My goodness! Is all I can say!

He even washed my car.... In my driveway... in front of my neighbours wearing his "bathing suit" literally!

In Australia they are called budgie smugglers or budgies for short.

Budgiagars (budgies) are small Australian native birds that are kept as pets, but also like a lot of Australian wildlife, smuggled out for sale at high profit somewhere else.

Speedos look just like you are hiding a budgie

I don't, but that's hardly saying much! :rotfl:

My dad has only just let go of his, and has upgraded to shorts made out of the same material. However since he used to swim in amateur triathlons, he would of got laughed out of the water if he was wearing knee-length trunks! Not great for water resistance!

Then again he is also a fanatical cyclist, which we now call a 'mamail'- middle aged man apparelled in Lycra! He cycles miles and miles every weekend, and week days if he has the time to spare. So I am pretty much used to my dad been known for his Lycra habits!

However, I do have a friend that says that if you are comfortable enough in your own skin then good for you.

That's the way I feel. If you're comfortable enough to wear one, bully for you.

I could NEVER, EVER wear one. Because I'm too self-concious. I actually really have a lot of respect for people that have less than perfect bodies and are comfortable enough to wear one. I really do wish I could be that comfortable.

But honestly, I have no problem with other people wearing them - irrespective of what their body looks like. :)

NO male member of my family would be seen dead in speedo's

In my experience Italian guys like to wear them as EVERY holiday i've been on i've come across an "Italian Stallion" (or so he thinks) wearing them with pride!

Same thing here in Belgium, in public pools , speedos are mandatory for hygiene reasons, at a time trunks were allowed , and people just got in the water with their everyday trunks ... so as nobody really want to wander around in speedos, they're only used in pools ...

And btw, swimming caps are also mandatory ...
