I've finally decided to give it a shot! I was contacted yesterday to mysterguest a new restaurant in town. I usually "babysit" my dad on Mondays, so tomorrow he and I will be heading out for lunch! I think it will be cool to eat at the hottest new place in town for virtually FREE !

How do you become a mystery shopper?

You can start going to www.mysteryshop.org, this is the website of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA). They have a search page that you can find which companies are looking for mystery shoppers in your area.

One important thing, a serious mystery shop company will not ask you for a payment to become a mystery shopper, you will find this alert in the website. As a mystery shopper, you are an independent contractor, so you can be in as many companies you want. You can even be a certify mystery shopper if you want to but is not a must.

I only go to companies that are part of the Association, once again if you find a company that asks you for money to be a mystery shopper, that's not a reputable company.

At first it sounds too good to be true, but this company gives you due dates, a time frame to do the reports (usually is 12 hours after the shop), you have to give them a lot of details of the shop (is a very objective job), some are buy and return shops, etc.

I don't do it more often because I have a full time job, 3 small kids and I go to the university at night, and sometimes when I do a mystery shop when I get home I'm too tired to do the reports (online). The thing is that if you don't do the reports in the time frame they gave you, that damages your record with that company and then, they won't give you a lot of shops.

I found I had to eat stuff I really shouldn't have (McDonalds). Some people like it for the flexibility, but I found other ways to make money with less work.

They ask for the social security for the 1099 at the end of the year, some of the companies will send you a 1099 if you did more than $300 or $500 a year.

Dad I went today and I would definately recommend doing this! Our lunch will cost me only $5 (I let dad splurge and get a beer ), so that's not too bad. The survey portion of the "mystery shop" only took about 10 minutes. For my first time out, I'm definately interested in doing more! I think I need to register at other sites in order to get more activity. The one I registered with said that they would contact me 4-6 times per year.

Mystery shopping is definitely not a "too good to be true" way to make money. It's very detailed work and believe me, you earn what they pay you. I have been mystery shopping for about a year. I pick and choose and only do a few shops a month. I would say that the average pay is about $8-14 per hour when you figure in shop time and report time so it's not bad but it's not great money for nothing either.

I have the silver certification because it only cost $15.00 and at the moment they give you some modules to read and then you take a test (everything online) and if you approve it, you get a certificate that you can print out, and you should memorize your certification number, since you will be asked for it.

There is a gold certification, but for that one you need to go to a conference that they post the dates and locations in the mysteryshop.org (MSPA) website, after that, you can have the gold certification. (I don't have that one, because they don't do the conferences in my area). Is good to have the certification because the companies gives you priority when assigning the shops and some companies only takes certify mystery shoppers.
