I'm Confused. Step Up or Step Down Rings?

If I have a 77mm filter and want it to fit on a 72mm filter thread, do I need a step down or a step up ring? AND, can I stack rings? If I have one 77mm CP filter and want to use it on a lens with a 62mm filter thread, can I just buy a few rings and stack em?

For a filter larger than the lens, you want a step UP. Yes you can stack them but on a wide lens you risk vignetting.

I thought it was a step-down ring, but I could be wrong.

I'd imagine you can stack them, but you might run into vignetting issues at some point.

Edit: apparently Code and I posted at the same time. I'll go with him saying it's a step-up ring.
