I'm claustrophobic -- should I ride Mission Space?

I'm pretty claustrophobic. I cringe when I watch anything about caving on TV. I have never had a MRI, but they look creepy to me. SO, should I ride Mission Space? It sounds pretty cool, but my DH has been on it and he thinks it will freak me out. Anyone out there claustrophobic and gone on the ride? Will I be distracted enough by the ride that I won't notice I'm in an enclosed space? Tell me your experiences, please!!

BTW, I now really want to ride it to hear just what the happyhaunts love about it so much! (if you don't know what I'm talking about, go to the trip reports board. gosh!)

I'll put it this way, Mission Space is where I discovered my claustrophobia, until that ride I had NO IDEA what that was all about.

At first it wasn't too bad, but then the CMs came around to close/lock the capsule. That's the moment I started internally freaking out. I pretty much closed my eyes and pretended to be somewhere else.

Occasionally I opened my eyes, mostly to see if there was an eject button :).... and when my nephew hit me on the shoulder cuz it was time for my "job" and I had to hit some button supposedly because we were flying the thing.

Anyways, if you already know you don't like closed spaces, stay far away

There really is not much room in there. On the other hand, the ride is very capable of keeping your mind off of that fact. I got a little freaked out in 20,00 Leauges but Mission Space did not bother me. Hope this helps.

My husband is a pretty sturdy guy and he came off this ride nauseous, dizzy and
uncomfortable. Just from a motion sickness point-of-view, we're keeping our
distance.

I have some mild claustrophobia issues. I never had even a minor problem with Mission Space. The only ride that has ever bothered me at WDW, was the create your own roller coaster at DQ. But I think this is one of those things where no one can assume they will be fine becuase someone else was. I think if you arrange to be at the front of the line just before you enter the ride. (This is the part where the CM asks you how many in your party.) Then if you get in the vehicle and don't like it you can walk out the door and exit the ride. People do this from time to time. Explain when asked about how many are in your party that you'd please like to be in front in case you "chicken out" upon entering the vehicle.

Hope that helps.

Great info. I like the idea of being able to bail out once I see the vehicle. I hate to totally skip a ride because I think I might not like it, sight-unseen. If I actually see the thing I can make a much better judgement. Good idea!

yes it is cool! And yes if you are claustrophobic this will be really rough! I am mildly claustrophobic and I started hyperventilating. Thankfully my son was with me and I got more worried about him so I calmed myself down. It is cool but only you know how you do in those situations. It is very confining.

If there is anyway you an conquer your fear Mission Space is probably one of the coolest rides I've ever been on. Might give it a shot and chicken out before they shut the doors if you can't handle it.

I'm usually nervous in small spaces but, it wasn't a concern on MSpace.

I was more worried about the motion-sickness factor.

Didn't have much of a problem the 1st time I rode, thought it was exhilirating.

The 2nd time (when I had a Rx patch) I got woozy but, so did DH & he usually doesn't?

I thought MS was awful! I am moderately claustrophobic, and it really freaked me out. I hated it. I wanted out, immediately after they shut the door. I even tried to let them know by knocking on the wall and saying that I needed out. But no one came.... :sad2: If I didn't have my 5 year old DD with me, I could have really lost it, but I managed to keep myself together for her. Let me just say, I was SO GLAD that the flight did not "return to earth from Mars"! I went on it right after it opened. Never, never again!

 not even trying it......it had just opened last time we were there and didnt' even walk by it...........

DH wouldn't go on it because he does not like enclosed spaces. He even hates riding on an elevator. He got all the way up to the pre-ride movie and when it said you shouldn't ride if you don't like enclosed places he decided not to ride it.

yup, you shouldn't ride it, i'm 6'3" and i was barely able to fit in there, my knees were almost banging the front, but it's like that on all the rides for me. it's a very small space.

I love M:S, and have no calustrophobia, but even I got a little nervous in that very tight seating arrangement. you really cannot tell how tight it is going to be until the ride starts, if I remember correctly, so I would not risk it personally if claustrophobia were a major issue for me. just my two cents.

labdogs42, keep in mind that the setup of the vehicle changes after you get in it. It looks like there's a fair amount of space when you look at the vehicle while the doors are open and even when you first get in. But after the doors are shut and you get buckled in or whatever, the panel in front of you moves in very close to your seat. It's right in your face. That sort of thing didn't bother me, but I did wonder about people who were nervous in very enclosed spaces. And that was very enclosed. It's an additional thought for the claustrophobic to consider.

If you are truly claustrophobic (and it isn't just not liking small spaces), you should avoid the ride. You'll flip out.

If you just don't like small spaces, it's a coin toss. Maybe want to walk in and see, then chicken out if it is too much. But remember, like the other poster said, the space gets smaller just before the ride begins.

Good Luck!

I consider myself pretty darn claustrophobic. I was a little worried about the ride before I got on. But I was too excited to get off. It went away with me once the ride started. I just breathe through it and try not to think of it as a small place. Because if you do, it WILL get to you and you will freak out! There's so many things going on during the ride that you don't really have time to think about it. If you think you might freak out, tell the CM beforehand and tell them you'd like to test the "cockpit" out beforte the ride starts to see if you can handle it.
If you get motion sickness easily, you might get sick afterward. I had to stay still for a few minutes to ease it down. But I never did actually get sick. Star Tours, in my opinion, was worse than M:S.
The ride was great, and I would definately ride it again.

I rode MS for the first time in October and hated it. Have a slight claustrophobia problem, and it really bothered me. Plus, you're not supposed to move your eyes left or right, but just stare straight ahead (to avoid motion sickness). The g-forces create a very uncomfortable sensation.

I'm a huge coaster fan, and even like rides like Star Tours (no problem with motion sickness). But I really had problems with MS.

I am a mild claustrophobe. (freaked out on the Disney Magic ship atrium elevators when they stopped between floors - will get in elevators in general unless they are over crowded. I need space in there!)
I also have mild motion sickness - small boats make me feel horrible, but cruising on a large ship is fine.

I had NO problems at all with MS. LOVED IT!!! I just kept in mind that the screen coming at me was a window. I didn't focus on how close the front panel was. I LOVED the gforce - it is such an awesome feeling! And there is even a moment when it feels like you are floating. It's an awesome ride!

Tell the cast member who is taking you in that you are very concerned about claustrophobia and that you would like them to stand by your door for a moment after it shuts so you can knock and get out if you can't take it. I know you won't have long to decide before the ride starts - but you should be able to tell right away.

Personally, I think the adrenalin is what got me through the first time. I was so excited and nervous and :goodvibes - And I'd read plenty here about not looking around, so I was really focused on the "window" in front of me.
