I would like to try renting points. We are going to try a 4 day cruise and I keep reading about how much smarter it is to rent points and get the cash to pay for the cruise.

I'm really nervous about it...

Who has rented points and what was your experience?

Haven't done it, but I think that I would first try to transfer the points. Pixie Dust! Lots of people are very happy doing what you want to do, and there have only been one .maybe 2 bad times ever reported here that I remember reading about.

Do a search on it and you will get lots of experience reports. Good luck! There is also some great contracts that you can use to help you feel "covered" in the transaction.

We rented points 2 years ago when we stayed @ BCV. We had no problems whatsoever. You may want to rent from someone who has been here on the DIS for awhile rather than a 1st time poster. When we rented, the owner mailed us the confirmation, I would call periodically to make sure the ressie was still okay.

If you post on the rent trade board, you will probably get some PM's from people who are interested. I had a ressie that I was going to "sell" for a donation to Give the Kids the World. I went back and forth with someone, but in the end, those points weren't transferable, and he couldn't use the ressie. Give the Kids the World will be using the reservation as a gift to one of the volunteers.

When you go back and forth with the people who PM you, you do get a feel for each other.

Good luck!

if you're talking about renting out points so you can receive cash in return, i've been thru it twice with no problems.

the first time, it was banked points that we had no plans on using, so we rented them out for cash to a person who used them at the GF.

the second time, it was holding account points that we were trying to rent out. this was a little more tricky because we had to first make a reservation with the points and then rent out the reservation (you can't rent holding acct points directly). the rentee ended up buying the reservation and then changing the resort and dates (for same amt of points). it's more work than in the first situation b/c you have to work with the other party a lot more to secure the reservation they want.

in both cases, the transaction was completed with PayPal, and i could see the pending paypal transaction hit my account while i was on the phone w/ the rentee. although the money hadn't truly settled (not until the $$ goes from paypal account to bank account), i felt very comfortable that i had received pmt (more so than if it was done via 'check in the mail'). also in both cases, the rentee was well known in this forum (given the number of their posts); this greatly added to my comfort level.

the folks at DVC member services appear to be well acquainted with this renting process, and they easily transferred the points/reservation while I had the other party conferenced in on the same line. also, i think they made me fax them a letter showing the number of points being transferred and the name of the rentee.

i would not hesitate to rent out points again, esp. if it could be done with paypal & the person was well known in the forum.

I'm in a situation where I have 12 points that I have to use or lose (Holding) by June. So, I have to make the reservations for something in April or May (am I right?) and hope that someone needs an extra day at a studio and would like to rent the points?

Since Judson has gone through it, what exactly has to occur on my end and what does the rentee have to do? Also, does everything have to be done with all on the line with member services or something?

Please help because I'd rather not lose these 12 points if I can get something back for them.

You would post that you have 12 points to rent on the Rent/Trade Board and state that they have to be used in April or May. The person who needs them would contact you and you work out the arrangements. You would call MS and make the reservation in that person's name. There is no ned for him/her to be on the line. Make sure to get all of the info from him/her like number of people in the party and ages of any children so you can give that to MS. When you get the confirmation from DVC, you send it along to the person who rented your points.

Good luck. Hopefully you will find someone who needs a few points. Have you given any thought to using some more of your next year's points so that you can combine the 12 with those? You may have a better chance of renting them if you do that.
