illustration of crop factor for any other digital dummies like me

was I correct in the "what I see through my viewfinder is what I get in my picture" statement?

If that is true, I'm not going to worry anymore about this crop factor business and just shoot what I see. ;)

Yes. Crop factor is only 'needed' when purchasing a lens.

so the only way to get the approximation of the yellow with a small sensor is by getting a wider lens, hence the reason for the 17- 18 digital vs the 28 film( whioch i am guessing you could use "as is" for a full format or...whatever the big sensor is called... digital)

yes - the only way would be to get a wider lens. a 17 or 18 - it doesn't matter if it's a lens designed for digital or not.

It does if you want to share it with a film camera.

definitely, or for that matter: a 5D, any 1 series body, 10D, D30, and D60, and any other FF body going forward... but in the context of OP's question it doesn't . ;)

Good example/illustration, 0bli0. In words that even a rookie like me can understand... :)

so if i ever want to splurge and get another canon body, will my rebel xt lenses fit/work? if not what should i steer away from...guessing the 2 i have now that are film would...and is the quality better with a small sensor for the xt now that it isn't really worth thinking about the distant future since i 'm not thinking of $$$ lens

lenses last longer than bodies. investments in lenses today is investing in your Canon future. but lenses also hold resale value so you have the ability to 'upgrade' and lower the costs in doing so.

the ef-s lenses fit the recent consumer range of Canon dslr with a cropped sensor. your next body upgrade is likely the 30D or its successor, which is also likely to have a cropped sensor and accept ef-s lenses. the Sigma DC lenses physically fit all of the bodies but aren't really useable on larger sensor bodies (1.3 crop and full frame).

honestly, i think a lot of the newer lenses (both ef-s and DC) are in decent ranges and make good sense. unless you are looking at L lenses, if you see a lens and it's sharp, has good colour and contrast characteristics, and is in your budget, i'd say go for it regardless whether it's ef-s/dc or normal lens.
