Illuminations Seating Area

I just returned from Disney this week and I was wondering if this was something new. About 10 minutes before Illuminations, they opened the large open roped-off area between the two gift shops directly across the lake from the American pavilion. Anybody who wanted to could watch Illuminations from this area, but you had to sit on the ground and couldn't stand up once you went in until the show ended (because youd be blocking the views of people standing behind you as this area is up a few stairs). It was a pretty good viewing spot and I had never seen this done before.

That's interesting. Ordinarily, this is the primary handicapped viewing area. I wonder if the park was relatively empty, or they've moved the HP viewing, or what...
