Illuminations Question

Can you see Illuminations without actually going into Epcot? I have seen posts that lead me to believe you might be able to enjoy the show by the back (next to the Boardwalk). I am travelling with DH on business and might buy a ticket a day or two, but he likely will not.
I have also heard that you might be able to slip in late without a ticket. Any insight?
Illuminations is always a high point for us...

...definitely see Illuminations from various points at CBR. However, of course you are not going to be able to hear the music (and such) nor see the "lake show" portion of it. You also get a great view right outside the International Gateway, again without the lake effects (although you probably can hear the music from this location). That may be a better vantage point for a quick and easy "getaway".

Why not consider an Illuminations cruise/sharing one with others from the board? You don't need park admission, it's really cool and you'll meet nice people.
