Illegal immigrants. Would you do this?

My (future) MIL is moving and she suggested for us (my DFI and me (who will drive the truck)) go to where they hang out for day work and hire a few of them to load up the moving truck. And if I wasn't available (I might not be able to get off from work) for her to do it herself. I'm like, WTH?!?!? Not happening. Her sister thinks it's a great idea. I said, then let them do it. I said no for two reasons. One is for safety reasons the other is my feelings about illegal immigration. So, wwyd?

I wouldn't do that but if you want to hire some helpers for moving, contact the local high school or college football coach. I know a lot of people that have done that and thought it was great! They paid the kids $10-15/hour-which is much more then they could make at their regular jobs in our old town.

That's a great idea. The college would be better because it's during the week.

I don't care about whether they are illegal immigrants, college students, etc. I want to know that there is recourse if something should happen to my belongings, and I also want to know that I am protected should a mover get hurt during the course of the work.

First of all there is an art to loading your stuff. Proper packing is critical so your stuff doesn't shift.

Secondly you would need to speak Spanish...I only know bits and pieces and couldn't not convey my directions well enough...yet...I will be working on it though.

As far as the "illegal issue"....everyone who comes to my house to do work is Hispanic. I do not see anything to do about illegals and it is a dead issue to me until I actually hear something worthwhile as a "fix".

The last two times we moved I rented the truck through U-Haul; on the U-Haul website they had a link to a web-based matching service for moving labor. These are real movers, but you just pay for a crew of 3 or 4 for X hours (minimum 3 I think). The website shows you the customer ratings for each provider (and their system is that they give you back a $10 deposit after you put in ratings, so they get a good amount of feedback). We used three different crews in a couple of different moves and they worked out fine. With the last one we actually ended up cancelling the UHaul and they used their own truck for the same cost to us. (Of course, I don't know if any of these guys were illegals).

No way! I'd be worried about liability issues/insurance... plus the whole "hiring illegals is illegal" aspect of it. Not to mention the language barrier (my high school and college Spanish is very rusty!)

Excellent points! I doubt that most people think about that when they hire day laborers.

Agreed. Plus, regardless of my feeling on illegal immigration, I'd be concerned that you might be prosecuted for employing someone illegally.

No. And I don't even have to venture into the immigration debate. The insurance issue alone is enough for me. That would also stop me from hiring school kids etc. who are not employed by a licensed moving company. I'm moving in March and have a lot of fragile stuff. I want folks who have done it before, know what they are doing, and have insurance coverage if they are injured.
