IHO of best book thread - What is the best classic you have read?

Let's define classic as one that has been around for many, many years. Books that may have CliffsNotes or were required reading in school. These books may also have a title that is familiar to most everyone, but that is not a requirement. Let's avoid relatively current titles like the Harry Potters, etc.

My favorite is The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas. Any novel that could get a senior in high school reading is a darn good book!

Right now I'm reading grapes of Wrath. My son has to read it for his summer requirement and we're reading it together. It's pretty good.

My favorite though was Lord of the Rings which I had to read in 10th grade.

It is hard to narrow it down to just 1 but my choice isn't that old but it surely is a classic and a must read.

I have liked Fathers and Sons by Turgenev (12th grade English), Brave New World (12th grade English), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and To Kill a Mockingbird (9th grade english)

Hands down favourite is Lord of the Rings.

Then in no particular order:

Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense & Sensibility - Jane Austen
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, The House on the Strand, Frenchman's Creek - Daphne DuMaurier
The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas

There are many more that would qualify but it is too long a list. It is hard to narrow down to just one really - they are all so good.

Oh - another vote for "Jane Eyre" and "To Kill a Mockingbird."

In my list, To Kill a Mockingbird is #1 but is VERY closely followed by Jane Eyre.

Another in agreement with "Mockingbird" and "Jane Eyre," but my all time favorite novel is Charles Dickens' "Bleak House." Epic Victorian Soap Opera!
