Ignore. Just practicing posting pics

KFK-

Love the photo of KFD on the RC slide! But, I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed about the swim trunks. I was expecting plaid!

And, I can confirm that the ice cream wagon definitely was still in use in the late 90's and early 2000's, as I personally purchased ice cream from the cart on a couple of occasions. And, the horse had the same first name as Mrs. TCD! It has been a long time since we have seen that cart, though.

TCD

I agree plaid would've been pretty cool! :lmao:

I think it was DisCampers that said the I/C wagon was actually running in December. It is a mystery how I've missed it all these years! I will investigate in July while I'm at the Fort! Scouts honor!

Well I promised I would come up with a pic of this mug bought at the fort in 1977. My friend actually gave me the mug. It was bittersweet as it was a family trip he had with his family but I promised to have it put in a protective clear box for display. At 1st he thought it had the Musket Mickey logo but none the less this is a 33 year old mug without a scratch on her.

:woohoo: Very cool....very cool indeed! Thanks for sharing this with us!

Way cool, DC! KFM actually DOES NOT have one of these T.I. maps! Nice work!

You're a wealth of knowledge Todd.:lmao:

AMEN!

Well, here I go again! Burning the midnight oil and the scanner!

First up, we have KFD and KFBro canoeing at the Fort circa 1986-ish. I was wanting to canoe this year, but it doesn't
look like I have any takers! :confused3
Could it be the heat, humidity and energy required for this activity? Lazy bums!

KSCN0015-4.jpg

In the early days of Epcot they gave you these passports to be stamped at each WS country. KFM apparently did not participate. :confused3

KSCN0003-1.jpg

Self explanatory.

This one was interesting to me.....A laundry service bag from the Contemporary. Looks Poly, but NOT. Another point to be made is ...
if clotheslines were OK for the Contemporary, then it should be alright for the Fort!

KSCN0015-3.jpg

Apparently new graphics designers were hired mid 80's! Much better! :thumbsup2

Wow! There is so much here that I want to comment on, that it is hard for me to decide where to begin.

I will start with Donnie . . .

That is such a cool mug! What a classic artifact from the 70's! I agree, it would be much cooler if it was FW specific, but it is still a treasure. Is it plastic or ceramic? It looks ceramic in the photo.

Todd- I have seen a version of this document before. In fact, I had these saved on my computer:

1342992307_63ce57a2fc_b.jpg

1342712089_93551aee69_b.jpg

I find the listing of "Future Attractions" to be quite interesting. One of the future attractions mentioned is the "Wreck of the Hispaniola." The map does not list the Wreck of the Hispaniola as an attraction, but item 15 on the map mentions the "Remains of the Walrus." I have heard the shipwreck on the island referred to as the Hispaniola, but never as the Walrus. I may be reading the map wrong, but it looks like the area referred to on the map as the location of the Walrus is different from where the shipwreck depicted in some of KFK's photos is. I thought the shipwreck was on the side of the island right across from River Country, and that is where the remains of the old ship are today. This map makes it look like this shipwreck is on the part of the island closer to the Contemporary Resort.

Interesting.

KFK- Your post #262 above has so many things in it that I will have to reply by a separate post.

Wow!

Again.

I am starting to sound like a broken record.

All kidding aside, thank you so much for taking the time to scan and post this stuff.

Time after time, I am seeing things that I never saw before, and never thought I would see.

So, sincerely, thank you.

Now, my thoughts and comments . . .

I love the canoe photo. What I find really remarkable about KFM is that she took the trouble to take these photos and preserve them. I remember all to well what a pain using film cameras used to be. When we used to travel back in the 70's and 80's, I might have snapped a few photos on a trip. Maybe just a couple of family shots, and that would be it. Who knew that someday there would be a place to share old photos, and that anybody would want to look at them? KFM rocks!

Epcot still sells passports to take around and have stamped at the countries. Also, they have masks that are free that kids can take around to each country and decorate. At each country, a castmember will stamp the handle of the mask, and if a kid gets a stamp at each country, there is a special gift awarded at the end of the journey. The masks are a free activity. If the KFK boys haven't tried this yet, you need to put this on your to do list for a future visit. It takes a long time to get one of these masks done, but kids like this kind of stuff. At least mine used to.

That laundry bag from the Contemporary is great. The artwork matches that of the big murals in the Grand Canyon Concourse. I look at that and it brings me right back to the golden age of WDW!

I found the Newspaper article mentioning the Magic Journeys attraction interesting. As far as I know, I never saw this. The article mentions that it was in the Fantasyland Theatre. This used to be the location of the Mickey Mouse Review, which I do remember. I did a quick Wikipedia search on this, and see that Magic Journeys ran in the MK from December 15, 1987 until December 1, 1993. It was replaced by the Lion King show, which I did see, and now by Philharmagic. I also think it is interesting that the newspaper mentions the Main Street Electrical Parade, which, coincidentally, has just returned to the MK for a limited engagement this Summer.

But, my favorite thing in your post is the mid-80's brochure mentioning recreational options at WDW. I have heard from old-timers of the days when you could drive a golf cart from the Fort all the way to the present location of the Wilderness Lodge, and some folks have mentioned riding a bike all the way to the Contemporary. This map shows that not only was it possible to bike or run to the Contemporary, but it was promoted as an activity, and apparently there were paths provided for this:

fw1980sJoggingMap.jpg

The map mentions that there were obstacles every half mile along the path. I remember seeing these in my early visits to the Fort, but they are gone now. Also, it is a little mind-boggling for me to read that it is only 1.1 miles from the Fort to the Contemporary via this route. It seems so much further, but I am accustomed to driving there, and this jogging route is a much more direct route. I know the WL is in the way now, but I wonder if there are any paths that still go to the Contemporary. Wouldn't it be cool to jog or bike under the water bridge?

Last, but not least, I agree with your observation that the WDW artwork markedly improved in the mid-80's. Since we are talking about the 80's it is time for me to share something from my much more limited collection of WDW artifacts (some of you old-timers will remember that I posted this before, but I must post this material again, because it is classic early 80's WDW stuff):

These scans are from Mrs. TCD's Grad Night at WDW in 1982:

These first four are of the park map for Grad Night:

111.jpg

112.jpg

113.jpg

114.jpg

The artwork on this map sure seems more groovy 70's than it does hip 80's.

Poor Mrs. TCD did not get a live performance of Starbooty, but she did get to shake her booty to the Pointer Sisters and 867-5309. Who can forget that song, Jenny, Jenny! Can you imagine how much fun that must have been? Classic!

Here are scans of the front and back of the scrapbook page where Mrs. TCD kept the map:

115.jpg

116.jpg

Whew!

I told you I had a lot of comments. But, I think that is enough for now.

So, thanks, and keep that scanner and midnight oil burning!

TCD

Oh Wow! Thanks for your scans TDC! I'm an 80's girl, so I fully appreciate those babies! I'll also take a pass on Starbooty and join Mrs. TCD in shaking my booty to the tunes of the Pointer Sisters. Made me wanna get up and boogie just thinkin' about it! BTW, Mrs. TCD now joins the "You rock" status for her scrapbook page.

The grad night brochure reminded me of the time our HS Marching band led the 3:00 Main Street Parade in 1982 or 1983. A memory I'll never forget. Never ever ever! Believe it or not, KFM nor KFD were able to go due to bros in school, so there are NO pics! Can you just believe that! :sad1:

Yep, KFM always had the camera with her. Back then you had to buy film, flashbulbs and pay for developing, so people were conservative w/the amounts of photos they took! KFM probably took more than the average and quickly put them in a photo album after developing. We both now keep the cameras handy! I am now much worse about photos than KFM. In fact I have 3 digitals in my purse right now. One being waterproof...just in case! :rotfl: I will have to dig back into the photo albums shortly. She has some good shots of the Fantasy Faire theatre that used to be behind the Dumbo attraction. I was actually pulled out of the crowd into the show one year (long, long, ago). Sadly no pics of that event either, but there is some very bad and silent video footage.

Won't be BUYING a passport to have stamped. I'll just make a print of the old one in the post above! The masks would be great, but my boys would tear them into pieces before we got out of the first country. Ruffians! (My youngest has autism and would never sit to complete one anyway.) They'd rather be riding! :thumbsup2 The KFK family has to keep it moving!!!

I never saw Magical Journeys at MK. I don't even remember it being at MK, although I do remember it from EPCOT. It was the original 3-D movie, then Capt, E-O (icky, ucky, yucky!), and now Honey, I Shrunk the kids. Magical Journey's was by far the best! In that theatre I remember Mickey's Revue, Lion King and now Philharmagic.

Off the subject, but i miss the Tomorrowland Theatre's showing of Disney World is Your World with the Kids of the Kingdom!!!!! (KFM has pics) and I miss the KOTK in the Castle Show(KFM has pics)....and a miss a nighttime Castle Show just before the Fireworks! :sad2:

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT SEEING THE MAIN STREET ELECTRIC LIGHT PARADE AGAIN....THAT I AM ABOUT TO BURST....I CAN HARDLY WAIT...I FEEL GIGGLY INSIDE!!!!!!

Ok, now that i have that out of my system....I liked the paths too. I do not remember them being promoted as an activity at all. Yes, I remember people being able to drive the golf carts to the Wilderness Lodge. You can still bike i believe, but I'd take a bike lock. My bro's $500 bike was "missing" for a while several years back. Apparently some people think that the bikes are there for whoever wants to use them. :confused3 Bike was recovered.

Got to repeat it! I LOVE Mrs. TCD's scrapbook stuff! (Is she a Dis-ser? If so which one is she?) Off to scan. I have located our first FW Gazette circa 1989. If anyone has an earlier one, I'd love to see it! I am assuming w/ KFM's collecting skills, this was either the first year for them or it was our first year at the Fort since they started these.

Now THAT'S a lotta comments! Sorry! Me thinks KFK and TCD might be a little OCD when it comes to WDW, especially the Fort! :rotfl2:

BTW, TCD, you are most sincerely welcome!

Off to scan....KFK

Does anyone remember when Disney transportation was not always free. It was only free to resort guest and you had to show you’re resort ID or could buy a card for I think $1.50 a day

I have to admit, I was doing an admirable job ignoring this thread...until today. Boy, am I glad I stopped ignoring this thread! Thanks for all the great pics and memories of FW and MK of old and showing me some things I didn't know about or remember from FW from when I was a kid (we started going in the late 70's as well). This has quickly become one of my favorite threads!

KFK and TCD...you both rock! :worship:

I'm still ignoring this thread... :rolleyes1

...and lovin' it! :worship:

Keep this great stuff coming! popcorn::

I couldn't figure out why this practice post thread kept showing up on the front page...

Boy am I glad I finally ignored your ignore instructions. We just went to the Fort for the first time ever this last November and we had the best time. I know practically nothing about the history of it and this thread has been unbelievably educational. I especially love the bits about River Country which has has fascinated me since I first heard of it, water from the lake huh? I definitely want to hear those snake stories if anyone feels like sharing.

OK, wow. I'm back from the Guntersville GG and catching up on my ignoring of this thread. I just have to comment on that mug shot. No pun intended. Anyway, am I to understand Donnie that you took a rare, 33 year old mug in pristine condition and set it on your toolbox in the bed of a truck?

C'mon man! Take care of that thing! :rotfl:

While trying to solve the mystery of the Wreck of the Hispaniola vs. the Remains of the Walrus, I came across this very early photo of Discovery Island. I never saw this photo before, so I'll bet a lot of you haven't either. Check it out:

discovery_island_1970.jpg

From what I have read on-line, Discovery Island was a natural island before Disney came along, but they enlarged it, by several acres, with fill and boulders. I guess that is what we see in this photo.

TCD

TDC you are right Bay Lake and the island were when Disney bought it. As I have read there was a family that lived on the Island up until Disney bought it. If you Google Earth that area and put the pointer on the Island it gives you the real name of the Island and I think it the name of the family.

A lot changes in 40 years. It looked better in 1970.

Dave, we just took the pic there. It's now on my tv with my Dale Earnhardt Sr memorabilia. Looking for a plexiglass case. By the way TCD, it's ceramic.

I thought about getting a Musket Mickey pic to paste on it and really freak you all out but I just couldn't do it. :rotfl:

TCD, did you run across this site in your efforts? The videos are interesting.

During one of my six hiatuses from the real world, I was a Bell Cap at the WL, it's been a while. At night, a Discovery Island CM would bring over a few animals and put on a nature demo in the middle of the lobby. It was very popular, kids loved it, I loved it.

Yes, I came across that site, which was quite informative.

I also found this: Article Re: The Last Day of Discovery Island

This is an interesting article as well. The more I read on this, the more I noticed that people seemed to be plagiarizing each other when writing about Discovery Island, and I wasn't sure how much of it was accurate. Most of the information is pretty consistent, but that may only be because people are copying each others' work.

As far as I can tell, the one and only shipwreck on Discovery Island was the Walrus, but who knows?

TCD

These photos seem to suggest that the location of the shipwreck, and the ship that was wrecked on Treasure/Discovery Island changed over time.

This is a scan previously posted by IDWD:

Notice the straight bow, which appears to be pointed toward the Fort.

Here is a photo of KFK's brothers, which she identified as being from 1983. Isn't the bow different?:

Here's another scan from IDWD:

And here is what appears to be the same promotional photo, which I found on-line:

This last photo looks like the bow of the ship is pointing toward the Contemporary Resort, and that it has a curled carving on it, as opposed to the straight bow depicted in the first photo.

Also, not that I noticed, but it apparently was cold when the photo of the gentleman and the lady with the birds was taken. Either that or the lady in the red bathing suit was pretending to be Farrah.

:confused3

TCD

TCD,

I think you are just seeing the degradation of the ship. The mast looks exactly the same to me in those shots. It looks likes the bow lost its long beam and just the bracket underneath remained. Also notice in the first shot there is a smaller type of mast forward of the main mast, but in the second pic it has fallen over.

I had NO idea! We always stayed on property, with the exception of one terrible year in our KFK family history. That mistake was NEVER repeated.

Thank you VERY much! I am sooooo very glad you joined us and are being taken back in time! This thread was def a fluke! I really was only practicing at first and didn't wan't to ruin someone else's thread w/my efforts of learning to post pics! :rotfl: Who knew!

:worship::worship::worship:

My snake story is brief....Coming off of the White Water Rapids (the one w/the inner tubes). A snake had made it's way out of the brush near the faux rocks and was in the water ! People were screaming and running for their lives! At least as fast as you can run in water too deep to run and too shallow to swim! :rotfl: KFK was among the first to be OUTTA THERE!:rotfl2: "Snakes! Why did it have to be snakes?!" Yes, LAKE water! No telling what else was in there besides the snakes! U used to be able to swim in the lake at ALL the Bay Lake resorts.

Awwww man! I love this pic! I wonder if the Hispaniola ever actually happened. The brochure said it was a Coming Attraction, then the Island reverted back to being Discovery Island. It may have been one of those things lost in the shuffle. I remember seeing a sign at Epcot "Coming soon...Africa." It never happened and then a few years later Animal Kingdom was born.

Dave, we just took the pic there. It's now on my tv with my Dale Earnhardt Sr memorabilia. Looking for a plexiglass case. By the way TCD, it's ceramic.

Your attention to detail is unparalleled! :lmao: Meaning the ship's bow, of course! I am inclined to agree that they do look different. At first I thought the straight bow had just rotted off, but after a closer look I think it was a different ship too. Regarding the Farrah comment (May she RIP), :sad2: Oh Brother!

Wasn't able to scan yesterday, due to Day Camp, a call to the pharmacy, a call to the pediatrian and Poison Control. After a 6.5 hour visit to the E.R., I was just to tired. :sad2: All is well at the KFK Macadamia Ranch and scanning should resume this evening. :thumbsup2

At first I was going to say no way. But on further reflection, you might be right.

Here is the photo that started it all. KFK in 1975:

KSCN00052.jpg

And then we had the KFK bros in 1983:

KSCN0037.jpg

I think that is the same boat, and it does look like some things deteriorated in that time period. Too bad we don't have a shot of the bow in the first photo.

I am still perplexed by that photo with the Contemporary in the background. But, I am going to stop looking at it, as that lady in the red bathing suit distracts me. ;)

OK, I'm sorry. But, that Farrah poster left quite an impression on my adolescent male mind.
