I never thought about this before, but why was Discovery Island sponsored by Friskies?

Did they make bird food?

Otherwise, what product association was there between Discovery Island and Friskies?

Or, was this just another 70's thing? :hippie:

And while we're at it, when exactly was Friskies a sponsor of DI? None of the early stuff mentions Friskies.

I can understand why Friskies would be a sponsor of the WDW kennels (and I think they were), but Discovery Island?

Why?

Wow KFM has quite the collection! Keep that scanner humming!

I think its gonna overheat! Not really. I did relocate the scanner for more convenience in bulk scannification! :thumbsup2

KFK-

Thanks for all of the great new scans! You were not kidding about KFM having kept everything, were you? (I should have been a believer after the burger wrapper and fry basket).

I agree with you 100% about the late 70's-early 80's artwork. No wonder attendance at River Country and Discovery Island languished- they sure didn't do a very good job making in look appealing.

While enjoying the videos you linked, I came across a few other gems on YouTube . . .

This is apparently a promotional video for the All American Water Party at River Country. It is remarkable to look at something like this and then compare it to the types of promos played at WDW now:

All American Water Party Video

This video is really long (over 10 minutes), but it shows a lot of River Country. And at least watch the first two minutes to see Goofy on the Boom Swing. Also, at about 4:30, there is a long scene where kids are climbing across what looks like floating log discs- I don't remember these at all. They currently have something like this in the teen area of Blizzard Beach:

Long River Country Video

No I wasn't kidding about the collection, but what you don't realize is that I'm not scanning everything. Just for the sake of repetitiveness. :thumbsup2

I loved both videos. I must admit, there was a little lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. These videos just go to show that sometimes simplicity IS simply better! Miss that RC!

Kim, I am still ignoring you !

HOORAY! YIPPEE!! IT'S THE GREAT 2 GOOFY CAMPERS!!!!! :cheer2:

I vividly remember those darn log disks, I even have a scar above my left eye to help me remember them.

:lmao: Hmmmm sounding like you're younger than me. I never did those. I think I must've been too old for that stuff when RC opened. I'm surprised w/all the safety violations, we weren't all injured or maimed! Those were the days! You could have a great time and kill yourself in the process if you wanted!

I totally believe you.

When I was looking at these, I was thinking how dangerous the whole thing looked. And, as far as I could see, it was a free-for-all, with people moving the discs as others were trying to step on them. I would expect that there would be a lot of face-plants.

The same goes for a lot of the other activities we see on the older videos- diving from the rocks into the pool- people crashing into each other on the slides-none of that would be allowed today, that's for sure.

I also remember that the water at the base of the flume slides was very deep. I know that I could not touch the bottom when standing. Same thing with the depth at the slides in the Upstream Plunge pool. These days, water park slides exit into water that is very shallow.

I'll bet liability issues entered into the equation of deciding to close River Country.

TCD

Looked GREAT didn't it! I remember kids climbing all over the rocks at the pool w/out too much being said. They'd probably be ejected these days.

I remember that the water at the base of the double slides was 12 feet. Clearly I remember feeling like my feet would ever touch bottom and when they finally did, i would spring myself to the surface! :woohoo: Good times!

I am sure there probably were liability issues. I woulda signed a waiver! ;)

I tried to grab a couple of screen caps from the 1999 All American Water Party video.

This video was produced in the time-frame that the TCD gang was visiting River Country.

But, there are things shown in that video that I sure don't remember.

Like this thing, which appears to be a squirting animal skull:

RCvideo1.jpg

And this giant floating frog, which obviously was in the Kiddie Cove area:

RCvideo2.jpg

I remember a giant floating fake log in the Kiddie Cove area- not this frog.

My memory deficits notwithstanding, these old videos sure do confirm that River Country was a fun and unique place.

TCD
I never went to the Kiddie Cove area, as I was already to old for that stuff. I'd be willing to wager that KFM does. My 2 younger bros spent plenty of time over there! Obviously, I don't remember the squirting skull or the frog. Seems like I do remember a floating log as someone else said. I definitely remember a water moccasin! Not an animatronic either. :scared1:

Friskies must have made the bird food so the cats would have fat birds to eat. :lmao: I will keep my eyes peeled for any sponsor info. It could very well have been a hippie 70's thing. :hippie: Afteralll, this is the decade of Disney execs that brought Starbooty to the MK! :rotfl: Can you picture that performance coming at you live in front of Cinderella Castle? :rotfl2:

Summer Night Live! Wow! What is the deal w/the shooting gallery? This is the second concert we've found that you would need to pay extra for the shooting gallery. I'm sure it's fun, but good grief! It's those darn hippies again! :hippie: Probably trying to discourage use of guns.

Who remembers when you got an actual Guide book instead of those little pamphlets? I loved reading them over and over in the room/camper and planning what I wanted to do first the next day. :)

We were there in '81! I was only 3, so I don't remember it at all, but my mom saved that same booklet forever and I loved flipping through it up until I left home.

I have a couple pictures from that trip, but I think that's all that's left of memories from it now. I do remember a cup with a Mickey Ear lid and a hole for a straw that I loved and used until all the printing was worn off. That may have been from the trip when I was 7, though. :earsboy:

Ambertides, I loved going through the old booklets too. The brochures don't generate the excitement the booklets did! I love remembering, or not remembering, the attractions that have come and gone. The name changes of the shops etc. The skyway is shown in this one. Or as the KFK bro named it ...."The Buckets on a string." In fact a lot has changed in Tomorrow land since the old days! Mission to Mars is now the dreaded Stitch's Great Escape. If you had wings, then Dreamflight and now it's BLSRS! Wish they couldv'e kept IYHW somehow! It was a freebie during the Adventure Ticket days! So was TTA, which was still called Wedway People Mover in this book. (As it is still known to the KFK family.) Looking back at the attractions, the majority of attractions have changed. Mostly good stuff, except for Stitch. I found an entire thread of SGE haters in another Forum. It is the #1 most hated attraction at WDW!

All this 80's talk got me thinking about one thing....HAIR.

Check out this pic of KF-Cousin, KFK, KFM at the Contemporary's Top of the World , Broadway at the Top dinner show circa 1989! :lmao: Since I am into
the 80's scans right now, there will be more hair pics! :rotfl:

To keep things Fort related....we stayed at the Fort that year!

Look out below! Here comes the Big Kahuna! Look at KFD....Holding his nose! :rotfl:

Alright, DisCamper....What is that!? Looks like some kind of traveling salesman at the Fort. :confused3

BTW, really love the lady in the dress and dress shoes with her hair all done up in the campground! Kind of reminds me of KFD's plaid pants and loafer pic!:lmao:

Todd, I don't know where you dug up the picture, but it does dig up some memories. They are very faint in this old cobweb brain of mine, but there. Thanks!

This is the old traveling fruit and vegetable the looped every day and in the summertime there was a horse drawn wagon that looped and sold Ice cream also. Still look for that pic

found it And here is the pic of the horse drawn wagon that looped and sold Ice cream

For some reason, I can remember the grocery one, but not the ice cream. You would think that a four year old would remember the ice cream now wouldn't you?

I am sure my grandparents bought me ice cream; I just don't seem to remember it from the cobwebs!

The Ice Cream one was still running on occasion just a few years ago.... maybe 05 was the last time we saw it.

The Ice cream wagon still is running we saw it last summer and in Dec.

:cheer2: Go DisCamper! I was hoping you'd find this one! I love it! I don't quite remember seeing it, but yet something is familiar about it. Never ever saw the veggie truck. What kid in their right mind at Disney would be looking for a veggie truck anyway!

I'll lend you my broom to clear the cobwebs if need be. ;)

Does it run seasonally? How in the world have I missed it? We've been to the Fort EVERY year since 2004 for 2 weeks at a time. Tell me how I missed it! My kids would love an icecream off of a horse drawn I/C truck! We will be there in under 1 1/2 months. There will be a full investigation into this!

KFK-

Love the photo of KFD on the RC slide! But, I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed about the swim trunks. I was expecting plaid!

And, I can confirm that the ice cream wagon definitely was still in use in the late 90's and early 2000's, as I personally purchased ice cream from the cart on a couple of occasions. And, the horse had the same first name as Mrs. TCD! It has been a long time since we have seen that cart, though.

Well I promised I would come up with a pic of this mug bought at the fort in 1977. My friend actually gave me the mug. It was bittersweet as it was a family trip he had with his family but I promised to have it put in a protective clear box for display. At 1st he thought it had the Musket Mickey logo but none the less this is a 33 year old mug without a scratch on her.
